Greece has been known as a great boating destination for many decades. Located in Southeastern Europe, Greece offers to those who love adventures on the sea some wonderful destinations to visit. From their archeological significance to their breath-taking beauty, the Greek islands have something for every traveler. Here are just seven of them for you to make a port of call.
Sailing is one of the most interesting things to do in Greece. There are a ton of beautiful places you can see on a boat and a yacht charter in Greece is the perfect way for you to explore them. To use a Greek phrase, this list is not the Alpha and the Omega of sailing locations in Greece. Instead, it is a starting point to know what you can expect.
#1 Santorini

Surrounded by the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea, Santorini is a famous honeymoon destination. The island features small picturesque whitewashed houses, making its coasts postcard sceneries. Being there is an opportunity to take a step back in time from the busy day to day routine and just relax. Wine tours and black sand beaches make a visit to Santorini a memory any honeymooner will remember forever.
#2 Hydra

Located between the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea, Hydra is one of the Saronic islands. Although it does not have many sandy beaches, it makes up for it with beautiful galleries and a splendorous Byzantine cathedral. The island itself is a throwback to a time when life was simpler. Cars for example are banned on Hydra. The only modes of transportation are water taxis and mules. How’s that for a real serene experience? As with all Greek islands, the waters around Hydra are turquoise blue. This island is just over one hour from Athens on a boat, so it is easy to get there if you opt for a yacht charter in Athens.
#3 Zakynthos

Located between two Whitestone cliffs, Zakynthos is the third largest Ionian island. Navagio Beach or Shipwreck Beach, is an cove, sometimes referred to as “Smugglers Cove”, on the coast of Zakynthos, here you will find a rusting Freightliner that washed ashore. Another unique feature of this island is that during the months between May and October you can see hundreds of loggerhead turtle hatchlings make their way to the sea. What a sight to behold!
#4 Paros

If you enjoy windsurfing or kiteboarding, this is the perfect destination for you. There’s also about a half mile long stretch of sandy beach named Golden Beach.
#5 Milos

If you love Greek history and natural beauty, this is a destination for you. This is where the famous statue of Venus of Milos was discovered – today you can admire its unique beauty at the Louvre Museum in France. There are also uninhibited offshores islands around Milos that make this destination a true sailing adventure not to be missed. Particularly moon-like rock formations and sea caves make Milos a popular destination if you enjoy yacht cruising.
#6 Crete

This is the largest of the Greek islands and probably the most famous one for its rich history, proud people, vibrant culture and delicious food. Although Crete makes up a significant part of the cultural and historical heritage of Greece, the island preserves its own local character and traditions, Cretan music being a great example.
#7 Corfu

If you love Greek history, this is your port of call. It is said that Hercules, Jason and the Argonauts and the God Poseidon visited this island. You can explore the ancient history of Corfu or visit its lush green mountain forest. If that does not excite you, there are pebble and golden sand beaches to welcome you for a relaxing stop.
Remember, there are more than 6,000 islands in Greece, of which only 227 are inhabited. Do you find it difficult to decide where to go? Here’s what we recommend!
- For honeymooners and lovebirds in general: Santorini
- If you’re a party animal: Mykonos
- For family-centered activities: Naxos
- For couples: Paros
Of course, these are just our suggestions. You might also want to sail to some of the largest Greek islands with a yacht charter, such as Euboea, Rhodes, Chios or Lesbos. No matter where you choose to go, Greece is stunning and exciting, a true boating gem to discover!
