Meme Poon Powers Forward With Volvo Penta

Meme Poon, General Manager, Grandtech International Engineering

Which brands and dealers are among Grandtech International Engineering’s regular clients in Hong Kong?

Our regular clients include dealers representing Princess, Jeanneau, Prestige, Galeon, Sunseeker, Azimut, Absolute and Sessa. In the past year, we’ve had the privilege to add Nimbus and Invictus as new brands in our portfolio in Hong Kong.

What presence do Grandtech and Volvo Penta have at the Hong Kong International Boat Show in Marina Cove, following events at Lantau Yacht Club and Hong Kong Gold Coast?

We’re collaborating with several dealers to showcase a selection of yachts equipped with Volvo Penta engines, allowing visitors to witness their performance and quality.

Some flybridge motor yachts featuring Volvo Penta IPS (Inboard Performance System) engines include Absolute’s Navetta 58 and 60 Fly, which feature twin D8-IPS800 and D11-IPS950 engines respectively, while the Azimut Fly 68 has two D13-IPS1350 engines.

Sanlorenzo’s SX88 superyacht has three D13-IPS1050s, while Fairline’s Squadron 50 and Beneteau Gran Turismo 45 have twin D6-IPS650 and D6-IPS600 engines respectively. Princess’s V50 is also equipped with two D6-IPS600s.

Sessa’s F47 has two D6-IPS650s while the Dufour 41 sailing monohull has a single 50hp Volvo Penta D2 saildrive. Fountaine Pajot’s MY6 power catamaran uses two D6-IPS480s and its Tanna 47 sailing catamaran has two 60hp D2 saildrives.

Other models using Volvo Penta engines include the Invictus GT280 with two 350hp V8s and Galeon’s 500 Fly, which has twin 725hp D11 engines. We encourage visitors to explore these stunning yachts and experience firsthand the excellence that Volvo Penta engines bring to the boating industry.

What range of services does Grandtech provide to shipyards, dealers and yacht owners?

In our quest to provide unparalleled support to our clients, we take pride in offering a comprehensive array of services that encompass the entire spectrum of installation, commissioning, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting. We believe in delivering holistic solutions that cater to all our clients’ needs.

When it comes to spare parts, we have clients covered. Our dedicated team handles the seamless supply of high-quality components, ensuring equipment remains in optimal condition. Moreover, our highly skilled service team specialises in pre-delivery commissioning (PDC) for new engines, annual general maintenance and ad hoc repairs, as well as the replacement and overhaul of engine services.

In the unfortunate event of system failures or breakdowns, our clients can rely on our prompt and efficient repair services. Our technicians, armed with extensive expertise and cutting-edge tools, possess the ability to swiftly diagnose and rectify issues across a wide range of equipment and systems. We understand the importance of minimising downtime and swiftly restoring operations to minimise productivity losses.

As the industry continues to evolve, so do we. Over the years, we’ve continuously expanded and refined our offerings to adapt to the changing needs of our clients. Our commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements allows us to deliver innovative solutions that drive efficiency and maximise operational performance.

How has your number of pre-delivery commissions (PDC) for new engines changed post-Covid?

Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen some notable shifts in the number of PDCs for new engines due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, we experienced a substantial increase, with the number surpassing our previous average of 20 and reaching over 30.

In 2022, we handled 24 PDCs for new boats. While this represents a slight decrease compared to the previous year, it’s important to note that the global yachting industry has been navigating various challenges during this period, including supply-chain disruptions and market uncertainties.

In the first nine months of this year, we successfully completed 20 PDCs, so based on current trends and market indicators, we anticipate the full-year figure will be like last year.

It’s worth mentioning these figures are subject to the dynamic nature of the industry and various external factors. Nonetheless, we remain committed to providing exceptional service and meeting the needs of our clients.

We have a wide range of popular Volvo Penta products that cater to the diverse needs of the boating community, but the Volvo Penta IPS stands out as the most sought-after product.

IPS is truly revolutionary and has gained significant popularity among both yacht builders and owners due to its exceptional combination of speed, fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability. We offer a range of IPS models, starting from the D6 to the powerful D13 engines.

When considering the range of yachts suitable for IPS, it’s important to note it varies depending on the specific model. The D6 engine, with its six-cylinder design, is perfectly suited for smaller to mid-size boats. If you’re looking for a reliable and comfortable water ride in a mid-size to larger boat, the D8 engine is an ideal choice.

Meme Poon on an F47 by Sessa, one of many international yacht brands using Volvo Penta products

For those seeking higher levels of power and performance in their yachts, the D11 and D13 engines deliver exceptional capabilities. In addition to the IPS system, we also provide a wide range of diesel engines and gasoline engines. These options cater to different preferences and requirements, ensuring we have the perfect propulsion solution for every boating enthusiast in Hong Kong¹.

What are notable evolutions in Volvo Penta and IPS products over the past year?

IPS has continued to evolve, building on its impressive history since its commercial launch in 2005. This innovative system has been refined and improved over nearly two decades of development by continuously increasing its power and performance, fuel efficiency, and enhancing manoeuvrability and control.

Aside from IPS, an important development from Volvo Penta is the integration of electronic systems into its products to enhance functionality and provide better control and monitoring. Features like Joystick Control allows boaters to effortlessly navigate tight spaces and make precise movements with their vessels, while Dynamic Positioning System² (DPS) improves manoeuvrability and ease of operation.

Assisted Docking³ is another advanced feature developed by Volvo Penta. Docking can be a challenging task for every yacht owner, even for the most experienced ones. Factors such as wind, currents and tight spaces can make it daunting, but these challenges can be overcome with Assisted Docking. By utilising a combination of sensors, GPS and advanced control systems, the technology assists in manoeuvring and positioning the yacht accurately during the docking process.

Additionally, there has been a growing focus on connectivity and digital solutions in the marine industry. Volvo Penta has introduced the Easy Connect⁴ system, which enhances boaters’ experiences by providing access to real-time data, information like a boat’s last-known position, engine hours, fuel consumption and performed journeys.

The integrated cloud service function provides you with a portable dashboard, letting owners access it whenever they like.

Can you tell us about Volvo Penta’s new online shop, which launched over the summer?

The online shop⁵ offers a comprehensive selection of Volvo Penta products including engines, parts, accessories and maintenance items. The user-friendly interface allows customers to navigate through the product categories and locate the items they desire.

Each product listing on the online shop provides detailed information, specifications and compatibility details, which enable customers to make informed decisions and choose the right products that meet their specific requirements.

Can you explain more about Volvo Penta’s new Extended Coverage programme?

Volvo Penta understands the importance of comprehensive coverage for a boating investment. In addition to the standard two-year warranty, the Extended Coverage programme offers an additional three years of full coverage for the entire package including the helm station, engines, drives and propellers. This extension ensures owners stay ahead of potential future repair expenses, providing peace of mind.

Extended Coverage offers the same level of comprehensive protection as the initial two years of warranty. It covers the repair and replacement of defective parts, encompassing all Volvo Penta branded products, excluding consumables such as filters, hoses and belts.

As a bonus, customers who purchase the Extended Coverage through Grandtech Hong Kong before December 15, 2023, will receive complimentary Easy Connect hardware and installation.

The Easy Connect system allows owners to monitor their boat’s vital information such as fuel consumption, engine data and GPS location from their smartphone or tablet, providing real-time insights and convenience.

What else should our readers know about Grandtech and Volvo Penta products?

In addition to the wide range of products, it’s important that owners understand the significance of general maintenance for ensuring optimal engine performance and lifespan. Regular maintenance, conducted by our qualified and well-trained technicians, is crucial in keeping the engines in top condition. This includes timely diagnosis and software upgrades using VODIA, a specialised diagnostic tool.

By prioritising maintenance and staying up-to-date with software upgrades, boaters can maximise the performance and longevity of their Volvo Penta engines, ensuring a reliable and enjoyable boating experience.

Fendi Brings High-Fashion To Pokemón

In December of 2023, the Italian luxury brand Fendi announced a partnership with streetwear fashion FRGMT and the hyper-popular video game and animated media franchise Pokémon. Inspired by the Dragonite line, the collection will celebrate the Year of the Dragon and will be available online and in Fendi stores from early January 2024.

A promising match

The three-way partnership brings a collection of bags with Fendi’s emblematic FF logo and the Dragon-type Pokémon Dragonite as well as other figures like Dratini and Dragonair. Beyond bags, it also includes t-shirts, hoodies, wallets, soft-chain bracelets, and charm necklaces. Players of Pokémon Go, an augmented-reality mobile game, will also have the opportunity to customize their avatars with digital accessories.

Hiroshi Fujiwara, the founder of FRGMT and the so-called godfather of streetwear, shared his excitement about the project, commenting, “It was a true honor to work with the house of FENDI, a traditional brand with outstanding craftsmanship. Grateful for this opportunity.”

Why luxury brands collaborate with video game companies

The first video game in the history of the world, Tennis for Two, is believed to have been released in 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham. Since then, the industry has experienced astronomical growth—from classic arcade games such as Bubbles Shooter and Pacman to immersive RPGs (role-playing game) series of the likes of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and, of course, Pokemón. Unsurprisingly, the industry has become a billionaire business and the most profitable form of entertainment, with an estimated revenue of 249 billion USD in 2023.

Players of popular game franchises are known for consistently investing in their virtual experiences. World of Warcraft enthusiasts, for example, often purchase services like WoW boosts and acquire prestigious in-game items such as rare mounts, which can cost hundreds of dollars. Through partnerships with famous games, luxury brands seek to appeal to this vast demographic.

Fendi’s focus on high-profile collaborations

In addition to video games, Fendi has capitalised on celebrity and social culture through lucrative partnerships with Nicki Minaj and Skims. The former was launched in 2019 and featured a blend of high-end glamour and streetwear, showcasing the Trinidadian rapper’s signature color, hot pink. The exclusive collection offered bodycon dresses, tracksuits, puffer coats, and bikinis. Minaj, a longtime fan of the Italian brand, also released a single titled “Fendi” in collaboration with PnB Rock and Murda Beatz.

The SKIMS partnership followed in 2021. Co-founded by Kim Kardashian, the American shapewear and clothing brand is renowned for its neutral-shade swimwear, underwear, and skin-tight tops. The collection highlighted Fendi’s commitment to moving towards size inclusivity, a core element at the heart of Skims, which offers sizes from XS to 4X. This collaboration not only aimed to enhance the luxury brand’s public image but also resulted in increased sales. The Kardashian shapewear and clothing company is worth USD 4 billion and reported a profit of about USD 750 million in 2023.

In conclusion, the Fendi-FRGMT-Pokémon partnership reveals the Italian brand’s mission to continue expanding and reaching a wider audience. If the collaboration proves successful, we can anticipate more partnerships with popular intellectual properties and fashion brands.

10 Moments That Shifted Fashion in 2023

The year that saw the revival of the 90s supermodel also witnessed shocking label closures and tumultuous rebrandings amidst a scandal or two. LUXUO highlights the year’s top 10 noteworthy moments in fashion.

1. Dynamic Depatures

Tom Ford bids farewell to namesake label with a series of re-issued looks that harken back to seasons past. In his archival womenswear collection campaign we see the likes of Amber Valetta and Karlie Kloss “mourn” the designer. The retrospective collection was shot by Steven Klein and styled by Carine Roitfeld. Along with Tom Ford, Sarah Burton leaves Alexander McQueen after two decades as creative director.

2. Phoebe Philo’s Comeback

Phoebe Philo announced her return after a six-year hiatus following her departure as the creative director of Celine. Her return was a frenzied affair which saw her highly anticipated collection get sold-out within hours of its launch despite little marketing. The sucess of the Philo profile and brand marks a new era in the democritisation of luxury fashion.

3. Moschino Madness

Earlier this year, Jeremy Scott annouced that he would be stepping down from his role as Moshino’s creative director after 10 years. David Renne was later named as his successor only for the young designer untimely death, 10 days into the role.

4. Magic Men

Pharrell Williams for Louis Vuitton, Sabato De Sarno for Gucci and Sean McGirr at McQueen showcase a new dawn for menswear. While we have yet to see a menswear collection from Sarno, his debut runway collection at Milan Women’s Fashion Week in September this year, was a skin-baring minimalistic take on luxury showcasing a departure from his predecessors’s “more is more” approach. Formerly the head of ready-to-wear at JW Anderson, Irish designer Sean McGirr is known to pack a sartorial punch and could be just what the McQueen maison needs to add the edge back into the house post its Sarah Burton era. Pharrell Williams on the other hand is continuing the legacy of his predecessor Kim Jones but this time adding a lot more star power into the mix. His recent Louis Vuitton pre-fall 2024 menswear collection in Hong Kong not only saw A-listers but was infused with his own brand of “futuristic dandy”.

5. The Return of the 90s supermodel

Christy Turlington walks for Ralph Lauren, Naomi Campbell for Dolce & Gabanna – the era of the 90s supermodel not only appeals to a different demographic but signals the change in the longevity of the term “supermodel” as we know it.

6. Concert Collection

First we saw Rihanna at the Super Bowl halftime show performance wearing a custom Alaia coat paired with a bustier from Loewe’s spring/summer 2023 collection. Then Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour where she donned a now famous Atelier Versace silver bodysuit, a Roberto Cavali fringe dress along with a whimsical Etro orange number, each differenciating a different side of Swift and her music. Beyoncé’s Renaissance showcase on the other hand was supreme glamour at its finest. Among the many custom looks she wore were Balenciaga couture gown, a Balmain polka-dot dress, a tasseled Agent Provocateur corseted body suit and a sport-inspired look from Telfar to name but a few. If these three music icons are anything to go by, it may be that fashion has gone off the catwalk and onto the concert stage.

7. BarbieCore and the Neon Effect

The year the world was taken over by the impact of Mattel’s Barbie. Everything was coming up pink as the fans were enamoured by the series of looks seen on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. While we may have seen this new found appreciation for hot pink last year with Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino runway, Margot Robbie’s depiction of Barbie onscreen may have showcased the plethora of fluorescent-inspired looks, from a 50’s pin-up swimsuit to a fringed cowgirl look.

8. Mischeif Mastering the Art of Clickbait

Mischeif mastering the art of clickbait with microscopic bag and absurd red boots

9. Jacquemus’ Surreal Digital Campaigns

Jacquemus’ revolutionises creating a campaign

10. The End of “Quiet Luxury”

2023: The Year of High-Value Deals, Mergers & Acquisitions

From the Richemont Group’s rejection of an LVMH acquisition to Kering acquiring perfume house Creed and Rolex acquiring Bucherer, 2023 is the year of powerful mergers and acquisitions in the world of luxury.

L’Oréal’s Acquisition of Aesop for US$2.5 Billion

April saw Australia’s largest luxury acquirement. L’Oréal announced it was making plans to acquire Aesop, the Melbourne-based luxury skincare company, from Natura & Co. for a proposed transactional value of more than US$2.5 billion. The deal was finalised in 30 August 2023 with Chief Executive Officer of L’Oréal Groupe, Nicolas Hieronimus commenting “On behalf of L’Oréal, I am very excited to welcome Aesop to the L’Oréal Groupe family.”

Richemont Rejects LVMH Acquisition

Since the start of the year, there have been rumours about a potential acquisition by the world’s largest luxury group LVMH of its fellow rival Richemont Group. The “whispers” were first reported by the Swiss newspaper Finanz und Wartscaft in February this year and has since gathered momentum. After LVMH’s successful turnover at Tiffany & Co., those in the luxury M&A space are speculating what the group’s next moves would be and many pointed towards Richemont’s crown jewel: Cartier. However, Chairman of Richemont Group Johann Rupert put to rest the acquisition rumours and said that the company was not for sale.

Kering Vs LVMH

In July, Kering and LVMH went head-to-head with their own conglomerate strategy dynamics — from a Kering acquisition to an LVMH sponsorship deal of Olympic proportions. Here’s what happened: The Kering Group made an acquisition bid towards Valentino, announcing that it bought a 30 percent stake in the Italian Maison for €1.7 billion in cash. The move is part of a broader strategic partnership with Qatari investment fund Mayhoola as Gucci — another house under the Kering umbrella — navigates its way during a transitional year towards growth. LVMH on the other hand was gearing up for a different kind of takeover altogether. LVMH’s Bernard Arnault will be sponsoring the 2024 Summer Olympics in a first-of-its-kind deal that comes with a US$166 million (or approx. €150 million) payout and will include Chaumet medals and Moet Hennessy wine.

Twitter Became X

2023 was the year Twitter unveiled its new logo, from the recognisable blue bird to an “interim X” design. While the shake-up was met with dissension online, the choice of logo follows the likes of some of Musk’s other six companies including “SpaceX” and “xAi”; an alphabet he has a longstanding affinity with. Love him or hate him, this Twitter’s rebranding cemented Elon Musk’s legacy as one of the most influential tech magnates of All time.

Tapestry Took on Kering & LVMH

When it comes to the pantheon of luxury conglomerates, Kering and LVMH reign supreme as they each hold a sizeable portion of the luxury fashion and goods market. However, August 2023 saw Tapestry, the New-York based parent company of Coach, Stuart Weitzman and Kate Spade New York throw its hat in the ring after making plans to buy Capri, the owner of founder-led labels which include Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors and Versace. The US 8.5 Billion dollar deal was a strategic move by Tapestry to create a “new powerful global luxury house”.

Rolex Acquired Bucherer

Rolex and Bucherer both are no strangers to going against the grain since their inception, significantly so in an industry that is so tightly surveilled by its own craftsmen and consumers alike. However, Rolex’s acquisition of the world’s largest watch dealer Bucherer was described by Rolex as being driven by “a desire to perpetuate the success of Bucherer and preserve the close partnership ties that have linked both companies since 1924,” a strategic takeover which takes into account both the relationships Bucherer enjoys with existing watch and jewellery partners as well as the welfare of all the staff under its employment.

Kering Acquires Creed

In July, Kering Beauté made its first major acquisition as it procured luxury fragrance house Creed from BlackRock Long Term Private Capital Europe and its chairman, Javier Ferrán in a strategic move that aims to see the company’s future growth in the beauty industry. The ambitious takeover was helmed by former Estee Lauder executive Raffaella Cornaggia who was appointed the role of CEO of Kering‘s beauty division in February. The all-cash transaction merges Creed’s potential across categories and geographies alongside Kering’s plans for expansion. As LUXUO reported earlier this year, the addition of Creed into the Kering family further reinstates the brand as the “largest global independent player in the high-end fragrance market” while for Kering, the maneuver lifts the group’s financial profile while simultaneously adding another notch to the company’s beauty portfolio (which already includes a perfume lineup of Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Pomellato and Qeelin).

What To Pack for Your Trip to Denver: Your Ultimate Guide

Image from FreePik.com

So you’re preparing to visit Denver. Brace yourself for an adventure that combines urban allure with mountain marvels!

But before you dive in, let’s master the art of packing. This guide will show you the must-haves, ensuring your trip is memorable and truly extraordinary. The countdown to your Denver escapade starts now.

1. Embrace The Layers

Image from FreePik.com

Denver’s weather is as diverse as its attractions—a day that starts with clear skies and warm sunshine can quickly transform into a chilly evening or even a surprise snowfall. Imagine strolling through the historic streets of LoDo in the morning, sipping on a warm coffee as the sun bathes the area in a gentle glow. Later, you might find yourself atop one of Denver’s stunning peaks, where a sudden temperature drop could catch you off guard.

So, you should pack an assortment of layers—a lightweight jacket provides versatility, easily accommodating temperature fluctuations, while a cozy sweater offers warmth when needed. Complete your ensemble with a stylish scarf; more than just a fashion statement, it’s your secret weapon against unexpected gusts of wind that might accompany those sudden weather shifts.

2. Choose Your Footwear Wisely

Image from FreePik.com

As you traverse the historic streets of Larimer Square, the oldest block in Denver, and explore the city’s eclectic neighborhoods, you’ll appreciate a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

Ensure your urban stroll is a pleasure, not a burden, by selecting shoes with ample arch support and cushioning to absorb the impact. Plus, consider styles that effortlessly merge comfort with style, letting you seamlessly transition from a day of cultural exploration to an evening of fine dining.

Investing in sturdy hiking boots is paramount for those venturing into the nearby Rocky Mountains, where nature’s grandeur awaits at every turn. Look for boots with ankle support to confidently navigate uneven trails, and waterproof options are ideal for tackling unexpected weather changes or navigating muddy paths.

3. Don’t Forget Hydration Essentials And Sun Protection

Image from FreePik.com

Denver’s elevation of 5,280 feet can catch visitors by surprise, and staying hydrated is crucial for acclimating to the thin air. Bring a durable, eco-friendly water bottle you can easily refill throughout the day.

Besides, the dry climate can be harsh on your skin, so consider including a small lip balm and moisturizer tube to keep yourself fresh and comfortable.

And do you know Denver gets 300 days of sunshine annually? As you’re traveling in one of the sunniest cities in America, you should make sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat essential items in your packing list.

The high altitude intensifies the sun’s rays, making protection against UV radiation a top priority, so invest in a quality sunscreen with high SPF and reapply throughout the day.

4. Gear Up For Outdoor Adventure

For the thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts venturing into the outskirts of Denver, you should tailor your packing list to embrace the city’s outdoor offerings. Pack a well-organized backpack with hiking essentials such as energy-boosting snacks, a compact first aid kit, and a detailed trail map.

If you’re planning to explore the scenic surroundings with the convenience of a home on wheels, consider including information about RV rental Denver. This rental allows you to embark on spontaneous road trips—from the vibrant cityscape to the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Denver.

Remember to capture the moments with your camera as you immerse yourself in Denver’s outdoor wonders.

Whether you’re standing in awe of the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre or witnessing the sunrise from a mountain summit, your camera is your ticket to preserving the memories of these awe-inspiring landscapes. Pack extra memory cards and ensure your camera is fully charged, as you’ll undoubtedly find countless photo opportunities in Denver’s diverse wilderness.

5. Bring Sustainable Shopping Bags

Plastic waste is a global concern, and Denver, with its forward-thinking mindset, encourages visitors to minimize their environmental impact.
