Lovely Lilac and Lavender
As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m loving lavender right now. It feels like the breath of fresh air we need to start the month of March. I realized that the pinker shade is more lilac than lavender so I’ve put together some of my favorites in both shades.
March is the month of expectation,
The things we do not know,
The Persons of Prognostication
Are coming now.
We try to sham becoming firmness,
But pompous joy
Betrays us, as his first betrothal
Betrays a boy.
– Emily Dickinson, XLVIII
I bought this classic popover shirt in clip dot in this shade of smoky wisteria to get a jump on spring. I can’t wait to wear it with jeans when it warms up.
I have no business buying another coat but I love this lavender double faced wool car coat so much.
Hamish Bowles is synonymous with lilac and lavender and his New York is filled with various shades.
A lilac cashmere sweater is a great transition piece that would look beautiful with grey trousers now and white jeans later.
This long-sleeve everyday cashmere crewneck sweater is a less expensive option.
You can also add lilac and lavender to your home in this work called April Showers.
How about a pastel suit to brighten up a winter day? I love the color of this oversized belted crepe blazer and matching crepe slim-leg pants.
I really wish it was warm enough to wear these chic lilac Flower Suede Heeled Sandals.

This Ulla Johnson Joan Floral Print Cotton & Silk Midi Dress would be perfect for Easter.
These lilac Soft Bow Suede Pumps would also look lovely on Easter.
Lavender Before Twilight
Silk-blend turtleneck sweater
Even though I’m a bit allergic, I can’t wait for lilac season.
A pinky lavender trench in oversized gingham would definitely brighten up a rainy day.
I don’t need this ribbed cable-knit cashmere beanie but the lavender color would look so pretty with all my grey winter coats when there’s still a chill.

Cashmere V-Neck Sweater
Peony colored slide suede sandal with buckle
Summer Dream

Seaside Linen Pants
The previous apartment of Hamish Bowles.
This belted silk crepe de chine midi dress would look pretty with a navy or grey coat on a colder day.
Lilac Nike Air Max 97 leather, suede and mesh sneakers
Another pretty tabletop with lilacs.
This lavender ruffled gathered silk-crepe dress is the perfect antidote to winter. Wear it know with a pale knee high boot and later with pumps or sandals.
The pièce de résistance of lilac fashions is this Bottega Veneta Lauren crocodile clutch. What a beauty!
Bon weekend and Happy March!
XOXO,
HC

Idea to Steal: Built-In Sofas
What do they say it takes to make something a trend? Seeing something three times? Four? Well, I’ve been seeing a design idea cropping up just about everywhere – including on the cover story for the latest issue of Domino Magazine.
Enter the built-in sofa.
While the built-in definitely has a 70’s throwback vibe, when done right the look feels fresh, modern, and seriously chic. And some of my favorite interior design crushes are doing it oh so right.
Take the LA home of Garance Doré, about to grace the cover of Domino mag. Designer Sarah Sherman Samuel flanked a minimalist fireplace with not one, but two custom built-in sofas complete with gorgeous curved arms and soft pink linen upholstery. It feels a touch Moroccan.
The built-in sofa is a perfect solution for a lounge-y room – think a TV room or play space. A wraparound version feels super cozy and inviting.
I’m obsessed with this built-in example. Another piece of design by Sarah Sherman Samuel, this time for the home of Mandy Moore, this couch a) has gorgeous upholstery, but what I really love is the function of the built-in side table. Combined with the recessed bookshelves (another favorite design idea I actually used in the Sunset Idea House all those years ago), it feels like the built-in sofa was integrated into the original construction. It takes what would otherwise be a pass-through space and turns into a spot you actually want to stop in and stay awhile.
While a built-in sofa has a decidedly relaxed vibe, they don’t have to look like you’re in Morocco or Ibiza. Wood framed designs (vs. plaster or those painted white) offer a warmer, less tropical vibe.
Now a built-in sofa certainly isn’t for the commitment-phobe. You have to really love your design and not be a serial changer of well, everything, such as myself. Hence why I don’t have any builtins in #thisoldvictorian, but I’ve certainly considered it. Our media room would have been an awesome spot for one. And who knows, maybe that’ll be my next update!
What do you think? Would you be brave enough to put a built-in sofa in your house?
