Stamford is glowing. As the yellow stone buildings warm up in the afternoon light, the whole town turns golden. I knew I would like this chocolate box in Lincolnshire, but I had no idea how much I would love it. I should have guessed, though, because the friends who’ve brought me on this day trip to Stamford and Burghley House wouldn’t lead me astray. They’re locals, after all, and they know what’s worth seeing.
Day Trip to Stamford and Burghley House
I’ve come by train from London with my boyfriend to spend time with my friends and see a new-to-us part of England. We’re looking forward to exploring Stamford, and to seeing Burghley House, one of England’s most opulent stately homes.
Burghley House
We start our day trip at Burghley House, which just opened for the season. We’re excited to see the interiors and South Gardens, the latter of which are only open to the public from mid-March to May 1st.
The house, which dates back to Elizabethan times, impresses us with its mix of architectural styles and layers of history. The furniture is sumptuous, the tapestries rich, and the beds fit for royalty (literally. Queen Victoria stayed here).
Outside, the vast grounds were tamed by Capability Brown, the most famous English landscape architect of all time. As we step into the South Gardens, we find ourselves surrounded by daffodils and topiary bushes in the shape of snails, mice, and other fanciful creatures.
Nearby are the Garden of Surprises, which is full of water features, and the sculpture garden, which reveals works of art behind every tree and shrub.
Stamford
When we’ve finished seeing all the grounds have to offer we hop into town to continue our day trip to Stamford and Burghley House.
And what a town it is. People have been telling me to visit Stamford since I moved to London, and now I see why. Every street is full of heritage buildings and church spires, and there are little alleys galore. It’s everything I love about Ye Olde England in one place.
We spend most of our time in Stamford exploring the streets, ducking into churches, and meandering down cobbled lanes. We stop at a local pub for a pint, then walk along the river and relax in the meadows.
As the sun’s descent brings out the gold in Stamford’s stone, we find ourselves at The George. Wine in hand, we toast to a great day out and a welcome chance to rest our feet after a long day of exploring. Soon the conversation turns to the rest of the area, and our friends easily persuade us to come back and discover more. I can’t wait.
