Friends, I have a confession. Today’s post is a bit self-serving. I’ve been struggling with a room in my house and I’m hoping both this post and perhaps your suggestions might help. Today I’m talking console styling. Consoles, buffets, credenzas – whatever you choose to call them – serve a wonderful decorative purpose. Consoles are not only attractive in and of themselves (and they also offer oft-needed storage) but they offer an amazing opportunity to express your personal style. But sadly, it can also be really challenging to get a console to look good. I’ve been working on the console in this room for weeks now and I’m just not landing on a look I love. I’m looking to the sixteen options below for a little inspiration and I thought they might help you too.
There are a variety of directions you can go with a console but I’m trying to decide between my four favorite styles.
The first style is the eclectic collection. This look allows you stack books, add ceramics and sculpture, maybe a plant (or three), a funky light fixture and maybe some art. Obviously, if you’re working around a TV, like I am, your ability to stack is limited by your TV placement, but I love the eclectic collection style as it offers a lot of creative freedom when it comes to color and texture.
The second look is all about books. Perhaps you stack them. Perhaps you have a collection standing up. Perhaps you open one up to display a beautiful spread. This look is usually a bit low, without a ton of layers which is helpful if you mount a TV very low. You can add in an object here and there but the focus is really on your reading material. This look is warm, friendly and worldly. I’m into it.
The third look is leaned art. The leaned art idea is often mixed with the styling ideas above. I’m a huge fan of layered leaning art (as evidenced here), but it can be tough to have enough space around a TV and if you’re not careful can begin to feel a bit cluttered.
The final option is ultra minimal. Perhaps you keep your console completely clear. Or maybe there’s a single vase or one small grouping of objects. This look can feel very crisp and clean. But can also feel super stark or unfinished. Hrm.
