Daily Dream Home: Contemporary Hurlingham
Today’s ultra-contemporary home is located in the Hurlingham area of Johannesburg, South Africa, minutes from Sandton central business district and close to Hyde Park, Bryanston, Rosebank, and Randburg.
The five-bedroom property is a cluster home, a term for residences that are situated close together and offer community and ease of use.
The aesthetic is contemporary with imported tiles, customized cabinetry, angular lines and dramatic lighting.
The combination of cool minimalism and high-tech design blurs the distinction between the interior and exterior.
The use of stone adds to the feeling of cool minimalism. The building’s architectural lines frame vistas of the garden and pool and a patio offers privacy and space for outdoor entertaining.
This property is listed for 13 million Rand with Jawitz Properties and is showcased by Luxury Portfolio.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHOES
And I couldn’t agree more. Shoes are everything. If I had to pick one favorite thing in my wardrobe, it would be a pair of shoes. In fact, it would be my new Attico crystal embellished mules I’m wearing in today’s post. Statement pieces to perfect…
Over time I’ve built a pretty extensive shoe collection. It’s very well curated, and many pairs have come and were shipped off again, to a second home with someone who paid far more attention to them then I did. Because over those years my taste for shoes has changed a lot, radically I might even say. Which is something I think we all go through, and at some point, it settles down now. I know what I love, and what works for me. Every now and then, though, I step away from that “knowledge” and I end up with a pair of shoes which I’m returning after the weekend anyway…
So basically as long as I can remember, I love shoes that have something unique. A pair of ankle boots in black is great, but that same pair in blue with the rainbow stripe on the back is even better! True story by the way; I think I was about 14, and I was I was obsessed with that pair in the shoe-rack. Back then obviously shopping happened only when mommy and daddy allowed, so I never got the blue pair, nor the black, but that moment defined my taste. I knew I was destined for more than just black or brown boots. Nowadays I know exactly where to go to get those unique pairs of shoes that make my heart beat faster. One of these stores – maybe actually the best when it comes to unique pairs – is definitely Moda Operandi.
You might know Moda Operandi from their fabulous trunkshows, which literally allow you to pre-order anything off the runway. It takes a little patience, because it will be when the product lands in-stores that you receive them. But at least your delivery coincides with those store deliveries, so technically, you will be the first. We love that, don’t we! But my point with those trunkshows is, they also bring to our attention new and potentially very unique designers. And where “renowned” designers stay too often close to their DNA, “new” designers are not scared to try something funky different. Hence, a platform for young and upcoming designers, with impeccable shoes taste. You got to love it.
Then of course their buying aside from their truck shows offers just what I want when it comes to shoes. You wouldn’t find a pair of “boring” shoes on there. Not a single one. For example these Attico crystal embellished mules I’m wearing in this post. Those could have been simple and elegant as their black satin does most of the work. Yet, I would not have set my eyes on it, because those palm trees on my feet just make life so much more fun. Which is exactly what all those exciting pairs of shoes in my wardrobe do: They make every single look more fun. And as a girl who loves to wear a pair of jeans and a simple shirt, statement shoes are a must. Thanks to Moda Operandi I’ve been covered pretty much every season with more excitement on my feet!

Springtime and flowers: gardens to visit in North America
Springtime in England means blossom on our trees and flowers in our gardens; it also turns our minds to holidays and for the gardeners among us, perhaps the need for inspiration from gardens around the world. Here are some ideas of gardens to visit in North America. The Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC are for […]

LOVING RELENTLESSLY
What my mother means to me… Regardless of the million little things we are so different in, we always find common grounds. In the end, we know how to work things out. I’m not saying that this has always been easy, because as with every meaningful relationship I have in my life, we shared intense highs, and terrible lows. Lows you think you might not recover from, and highs that leave you with a much better understanding of that specific person. Things fall in place. The story about mom and me, for Tory Burch.
We share a connection that is different from any other connection I have with the people I love. This mother-daughter connection is so unique I can’t put my finger on it, and which became even a million times stronger when I had kids of my own. I did not have to say a single word, she knew. Tears after giving birth felt less bad – you have to know, I’m a person who is terrible when it comes to sharing deep emotions, so those post-labour tears felt as a weakness… She made sure I let those feelings out, without being scared of looking vulnerable. All my doubts and insecurities about becoming a mother myself, she took away… Holding in my arms those tiny little bundles of love, scared to death for doing something wrong, she showed me how to “Love Relentlessly”.
And with Mother’s Day around the corner, it’s time to talk about gifts for those super moms – mom, this is the part where you have to stop reading – and one of the things that have always been a success for Mother’s Day is a new fragrance. Of course.
And with Spring going on in full force, and a hot summer ahead of us, a fresh fragrance seems the way to go. Grapefruit, Sicilian Lemon, and Raspberry – to name a few – are definitely notes for this time of year, so Tory Burch’s new fragrance “Love Relentlessly” could not have been launched at a better time! The cutest love story goes behind it, where Tory herself describes her parent’s loving relationship. “The most loving couple I’ve ever seen” as she says herself. I bet something that thought her how to love relentlessly. Something we have to pass forward… So little bears, when the time is right and you two are able to understand things beyond feelings, I want to tell you, I love you relentlessly.

A Simple Spring Side: Prosciutto & Pea Salad
The farmers markets are beginning to open up, and my cravings for fresh, green produce has intensified. So with my muse being a particular food craving of my love for fresh green salad as he is currently working abroad and doesn’t have as many of the favorite foods readily available, when I came across this recipe in Bon Appétit magazine last month, I ripped it out to try at home. And I am happy that I did.
One of my favorite sections of Bon Appétit is r.s.v.p. in the front of the magazine in which readers write in requesting a particular recipe from a favorite restaurant. Inspired by Houston’s Coltivare restaurant, the contrast of brilliant colors, as well as the mere mention of prosciutto, had me nodding my head as a wonderful new spin on a fresh green spring-time salad. After all, what doesn’t go well with prosciutto?
As luck would have it, Maille had just sent me one of their new gourmet mustards to try: Chardonnay white wine and white truffle from alba, and let me just say, that extra something special adds a luxurious finish to this spring salad. Now don’t worry, if you do not have this particular Dijon mustard, their original is my go-to for everything that calls for a teaspoon of Dijon, and it can be found in just about any grocery market. As I shared in this recipe last year, Maille’s mustards provide a subtle, silk finishing flavor that isn’t found in any other mustards I’ve tried, and since being introduced to the brand via Susan Hermann Loomis, it is my go-to brand.
And now, welcome to spring! I do hope you enjoy.
- 1Tbsp lemon juicefresh
- 1/2tsp Dijon mustardMaille is my favorite
- 3Tbsp olive oilextra virgin
- 1 1/4cups peasfresh English (thawed frozen in a pinch)
- 12ounces sugar snap peastrimmed (about 3 cups)
- 4ounces arugulaabout 6 cups
- 4ounces prosciuttothinly sliced
-
In a large bowl, whisk with a fork lemon juice and mustard. Gradually add the olive oil, whisking until emulsified
-
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Bring a large pot of salted water to boil.
-
Blanch the peas: Working in batches if necessary depending upon the size of your pot (one layer of peas per blanch), cook green peas and sugar snap peas until crisp, but tender - about 2 minutes a batch.
-
Upon taking the peas out with a wire mesh, place them in a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking and maintain the brilliant green color.
-
Drain and pat dry the peas.
-
In a large mixing bowl, place the vinaigrette on the bottom.
-
Add the arugula, sugar snap peas and English peas on top of the vinaigrette.
-
Toss until coated well with the vinaigrette.
-
Season as needed with salt and pepper.
-
Arrange the salad on a platter.
-
Top with small narrow slices of prosciutto.
-
Pair with your favorite main dish, a loaf of fresh, crusty artisanal bread, a glass of crisp white wine or rosé and bon appétit!
