A Picture Perfect Father’s Day Gift

I’ve hardly told this story to a soul, but I have the feeling I’m not the only woman out there who’s had this experience, so I thought I’d share it with you today. When I first found out I was having a boy, I was devastated. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. I cried for days. I’d always envisioned myself as the mother of daughters. In all my life, I never even entertained the possibility that I could have a son. My brain simply couldn’t seem to wrap itself around the news.

I mourned the daydreams of handing down special clothes to my future daughter. I mourned the mother daughter talks and showing her how to walk through the world as a strong feminist woman. I also particularly cherished the father daughter relationship and had really wanted my husband to experience that truly unique relationship as well. I mourned the loss of that opportunity for my husband too.

But of course that all changed once our son came on the scene. He’s now the light of my world, but I’ve particularly loved bearing witness to the father son relationship. Not having witnessed brothers growing up, I hadn’t really seen that bond before. It’s something beyond special.

But while I’ve been joyfully observing all these tender father son moments for four years now, I have done such a terrible job documenting them!
