Most of my ancestors came to America from England in the 17th-century. Sometimes, I think about what my life would be like if they hadn’t left. Would I have a lovely accent and live in house filled with chintz ? I sort of wish I was in this heavenly house in Hampshire right now instead of waiting in my apartment for the Electoral College results. The Regency era house was designed by Philip Hooper, who is the design director at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler and knows a thing two about classic English decorating.
‘Today it seems that everyone is their own interior designer. Clicking on a website to look at a picture of a room, then translating it into an interior-design scheme, regardless of context. For me, so many images and so much information undermines the craft. Traditionally, an imaginative interior designer would instruct and pass on knowledge; design is the solving of problems through informed opinion based on fact.’
