This Home’s Award Winning Design is a Must See

While it may be the beginning of June, yup I just said June, that doesn’t mean bright white or neutral interiors have to reign supreme. Life’s too short for same ole, same ole design. Enter the newly named 2019 winner of the Australian Interior Design Awards for Residential Decoration. This home, designed by my perpetual design crush Arent & Pyke, is sultry, layered, full of saturated color, amazing texture and unique style. I’m so loving every moment.

This home features a unique mix of hard materials that play a prominent role in the overall design. Stone, concrete, steel, terrazzo and dark woods and play beautifully together. The living room’s vintage channel tufted sofa in that dusty teal blue is the anchor for the tonal palette that carries throughout this house. The oversized art carries the color and your eye skyward.

Directly across from the vintage sofa is a series of custom elements including a built-in sofa (swoon!) and a series of shelves suspended from the ceiling. The effect is light and airy even though the tones and textures of the materials are earthy and moody.

I’m really regretting selling my vintage travertine coffee table, especially after seeing how Arent & Pyke brilliantly paired the one in the living with a custom upholstered ottoman.

Hello cactus goals.

There are so many gorgeous components in this space and as you start to dig into the details it only gets better. From the fiddle leaf fig planted into the floor, to the marble block that serves as your final step off the gorgeous concrete staircase, every element is elevated.

Dramatic modern art and velvet covered Gubi chairs are a match made in heaven.

The industrial feeling materials continue in the home’s outer courtyard.

While the stone walls continue through into the bedrooms, the design team softened them with plush vintage rugs, shearling upholstered chairs and nubby throw blankets.

Obsessed with this bold headboard idea! It would be so fun in a kid’s room.

Another sophisticated kids room features a playful mix of materials and more lush colors. I always love a wall mounted head board. This is a great reminder that young spaces don’t have to be juvenile.

If you were ever looking for an excuse to make a bold choice, to think outside of the box or buck the design trends you see saturating your social feeds, this should be the project to inspire you to go for it.
