2021 has proved to be the year for NFTs (non-fungible tokens). From being an obscure term at the start of the year, NFTs is now the word of the year according to Collins Dictionary. This new phenomenon is part of the blockchain craze that has gained prominence over the past few years thanks to Bitcoin and other altcoins like DogeCoin and Shiba Inu.
What was supposed to be a niche field has now been democratised to include top influencers to celebrities and laymen. People are paying astronomical prices in order to be the owner of the digital artifact. The most famous would perhaps be the artwork by Beeple, which had been sold for US$69.3 million.
Come 2022, it would be expected that NFTs will continue to be the buzzword and according to a report by Business Insider, analysts at JPMorgan said the total market capitalisation of the NFT universe is worth to be US$7 billion. This figure could potentially grow further but the bank caveat saying: “The growth of the NFT market would be conditional on NFT market participants and regulators addressing the legal issues facing the industry.”
