Your Year

Every January 1st, I post an inspiring quote or mantra on Instagram. This one seemed to really resonate with my followers. People may scoff at inspirational quotes on the internet but sometimes they strike a chord and make you realize you need or want to make a change. That’s true of New Year’s Day in general.

Every year, people proclaim they want to lose weight, save money, travel more, or get a new job. The key to making resolutions is to be more goal oriented and specific, have a timeline, make it achievable, and recalibrate if you drift off track.

Start by making a list of all the things you want to do and then create a plan to achieve them. It also helps to break down some yearly goals into more manageable segments such as monthly, weekly, and daily tasks that will help you stay on course. It’s also a good time to think about five and ten year goals as well.

For instance, instead of just saying you want to lose weight, create a plan. How much weight do you want to lose? A healthy amount to lose is 1-2 pounds per week. How long will it take you to lose 20 pounds?  It could take 10-20 weeks so set a realistic deadline of 12-15 weeks. How are you going to do it? Are you going to go to the gym by yourself, hire a trainer, or workout to online videos at home?  Can you find a buddy to whom you will be accountable to help motivate you to workout every week?  Do you need to hire a nutritionist to help you create healthier meals and put you on an eating plan? Do you need to join Weight Watchers and count points or go cold turkey by cutting out sugar and other bad foods? How will you get get back on track if you fall off the wagon?

I’m still planning out my Write It Down, Make It Happen action items for 2018. I’m using this entire week to get myself ready for the year ahead so don’t feel bad if you don’t have an idea of what you want to do this year. You still have time.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year filled with lots of love and happiness!

XOXO,

HC
