Diamond Atelier’s Yamaha XSR900

It isn’t often a custom bike shop is allowed to experiment with entirely new design concepts, but Munich’s Diamond Atelier was given the sweet chance when Dutch watchmaker TW Steel commissioned them to rework a new production Yamaha XSR900.  They had never worked on an XSR900 before but were intrigued by the organic look of the frame.

They proceeded to ‘unclutter’ the bike looking for a minimalist aesthetic.  The engine was fine, the only tweaking done was the addition of K&N filters and a custom exhaust.  New bodywork was created from aluminum by Marvin Diehl of KRT Framework.  One feature requested by the client was that under the front flap where a headlight would normally be located they would instead fit it with a TW Steel timepiece.

To maintain the minimalist design Diamond Atelier managed to cut 100 meters of electrical wire from the bike, keeping all functions intact except for the ABS system.  With the addition of ABM Multiclip handlebars, lowered anodized forks, Gilles rearsets, and a color-matched Wilbers Blackline rear shock, the XSR900, now dubbed ‘Æon’ was ready to hit the streets with its bold, forward-reaching style.  [via]

Garmin Virb 360

Designed to be a direct competitor with the upcoming 5.2K GoPro Fusion, outdoor tech company Garmin has just released the Garmin Virb 360 action camera ($800) to demonstrate a benchmark for what a 360 camera should be.  The Virb 360 provides up to 5.7K, 30 fps unstitched video output or 4K, 30 fps spherical stabilization auto-stitched video ready for live streaming or upload once you finish recording.

The Virb 360 carries four built-in microphones to capture a full 360 degrees worth of sound. It also comes with a free mobile app and desktop editing software to edit, stabilize, or add data overlays to your video and is compatible with Bluetooth microphones.  The gadget allows voice recognition commands in six languages for hands-free operation, while its Li-Ion battery provides a full hour of recording without overheating and, since it is removable, can be switched out quickly for longer sessions.  This rugged action cam is waterproof down to 30 foot.

The Virb 360 is small with dimensions of only 1.5 x 2.8 x 2.3 inches, weighs just 5.6 ounces, and its handgrip folds out into a nifty stable tripod.

Heimplanet Nias 6-Person Tent

Air tents (with inflatable support beams rather than metal/fiberglass rods) are a recent development in camping equipment and Hamburg-based Hemiplanet is a respected maker in the field.  Their latest release is the extreme wind-enduring Nias 6-Person Tent ($1,100) as a possible solution to those who like to keep a lot of equipment (or a lot of family members) close inside.

The Heimplanet Nias tent uses their patented Inflatable Diamond Grid (IDG) geodesic design to create a firm support structure that raises over the main tent body.  The outer layer of the support structure is extra stiff polyester with a flexible polyurethane inner tube.  There are four individual sections so that loss of air in one does not let the tent collapse.  The tent has a total weight of 6.8 kilos (15 lbs), can be pumped up in just a minute or two and, due to the geodesic design, it is said to be very stable even in high winds.

Attached under this structure, the tent has two separate chambers on the ends with a vestibule area between.  The sleeping chambers are removable and taking one out allows larger items, such as bikes, to be kept inside the tent.  The Heimplanet Nias tent comes with all necessary stakes and tie-downs and a repair kit for quick field repairs in case of accidents.
