When I was in Birmingham, Alabama last fall, interior designer Andrew Brown was kind enough to show me around. We took a lovely drive through some picturesque neighborhood of Mountain Brook where he pointed out many homes designed by James F. Carter. The exteriors were classically elegant and today on Pinterest, I realized that the interiors are just as beautiful. It also turns out that the house I happened come across belongs to the architect himself and was featured in the March/April 2016 issue of Veranda. It’s so traditional that I was surprised to read that it was only just built a few years ago. I especially love all the bookshelves tucked into every corner and attention to detail. The interiors were decorated with the help of his friend Jane Hawkins Hoke, who doesn’t seem to have a website. The mix of art and antiques and architecture is so perfect that I would happily move in and not change a thing. Perhaps I’ll have to call Mr. Carter when I’m ready to build my own home.
