Hubert de Givenchy, the renowned French couturier, shared a friendship for decades with the designer and sculptor Diego Giacometti, the brother of brother of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Many of the bespoke pieces he made for Givenchy will be up for auction at Christie’s in Paris on 6 March 2017. The accompanying week long exhibition will also celebrate Giacometti’s work and his close friendship with Givenchy.
“With this sale, I want to pay a further tribute to him, an additional recognition which he does not need, but which shows how important he was to me.” – Hubert de Givenchy
Many of the 21 Giacometti pieces up for auction were custom made for Givenchy’s Château de Jonchet in the Loire Valley. They include “a pair of magnificent bronze octagonal dining tables, four bronze stools, and a major white patina lantern that hung in the main staircase of Givenchy’s chateau, which preceded the one created for the Musée Picasso.”
This sale is a great excuse to post a full look at Château de Jonchet in which you can see where each of Giacometti’s pieces have lived for years.
