American playwright, author, screenwriter, actor, and director Sam Shepard passed away last week. He grew up in the Midwest but moved to New York in the 1960’s where he hung out with Patti Smith and Robert Maplethorpe and went on tour with Bob Dylan. He wrote 44 plays including Buried Child but most people probably know him as an actor. He’s best known for the classic film Days of Heaven, The Right Stuff, and my personal favorite, Baby Boom. He’s also known for his 30 year love affair with actress Jessica Lange with whom he has two children. You can feel the love in photos of them taken by photographer Bruce Weber for Vanity Fair. It’s clear from looking at old photos of Sam Shepard that he also had great style which is coming to light after his death. You can take the boy out of the midwest but you can’t take the midwest out of the boy.
“I hate endings. Just detest them. Beginnings are definitely the most exciting, middles are perplexing and endings are a disaster. … The temptation towards resolution, towards wrapping up the package, seems to me a terrible trap. Why not be more honest with the moment? The most authentic endings are the ones which are already revolving towards another beginning. That’s genius.” -Sam Shepard
