Book

How to Choose a Partner (School of Life) by Suan Quilliam

Perhaps you’ve heard of The School of Life series with books focused on topics such as how to be alone, how to be a leader, how to age, how to stay sane and how to find fulfilling work, just to name a few. Well, based on the comments, this book, How to Choose a Partner, which just came out in January, is being well received by readers. Offering guiding points for the individual as they navigate their journey of growth, the book focuses on the growing process which is the only thing we can control. It certainly looks intriguing and worthwhile whether or not we desire to have a partner or not.

—The Sorbonne Affair: A Hugo Marston Novel by Mark Pryor

Released just this past week in paperback, the seventh in Mark Pryor’s Hugo Marston’s series is set in Paris and involves an American author who finds a spy camera in her accommodations at the Sorbonne Hotel. A mystery novel to whisk away a weekend perhaps?

Lidia’s Mastering the art of Italian Cuisine: Everything You Need to Know to be a Great Italian Cook by Lidia Matticchio Bastianich and Tanya Bastianich Manuali

I do focus much of my international cuisine fascination on the culture of France, but Italy is equally as delicious especially when it comes to food. Released in 2015, if you are a lover of Italian cuisine you need this book in your kitchen. The Emmy-award winning host of Lidia’s Kitchen, Lidia Bastianich, offers readers a deeper understanding how to create the delicious Italian food we love to eat.

Simply Nigella: Feel Good Food by Nigella Lawson

Another oldie, but goodie. Nigella Lawson’s most recent cookbook (a 2015 release) offers quick weekday dinners as well as meals for a crowd of family and friends. No matter how busy you may become in your everydays, delicious food is a must, and Nigella shows readers how to welcome it into their lives.

Tobson draped crepe top by Malene Birger

On Thursday, I shared my guest appearance on Portland’s AM Northwest in which we discussed how to create a Capsule Wardrobe. On that particular segment I was wearing a Malene Birger navy silk blouse which was purchased on sale at The Outnet. And when I discovered a new arrival of Malene Birger items had just arrived at the site this week, I wanted to share two finds I think you might want to add to your own capsule wardrobe. First, the Tobson draped crepe top in ivory: a lovely layering piece under a cardigan, a jacket or a blazer.

Finae draped stretch-crepe dress (other colors available)

Second, if you are a looking for a dress with a little silhouette revelation paired with absolute comfort, have a look at Malene Birger’s Finae draped stretch-crepe dress.

Delicious farm fresh produce is still dancing on my tastebuds as last night I had the opportunity to enjoy a farm-to-table experience on Sauvie Island in Portland (check out my photo here on Instagram, as well as my IG Stories for more pics). Set under a sage oak tree (the setting truly was surreal, as though to introduce a classic novel or children’s book – “under the old oak tree . . . “), complete with globe lights and white table cloths, we talked, we sip, we nibbled, we were satisfied and then they said we could go pick corn to our delight in the nearby cornfield. And yes, we did take them up on that opportunity.

Such an experience was a beautiful culmination of a wonderful visit to Portland these past few days. Beginning with the appearance on Afternoon Live on Wednesday and then on AM Northwest on Thursday, the dinner in many ways was a celebration, but probably more a moment to relax and unwind. It’s funny how getaways go, even if you do mix in a little or a lot of work, home always sounds sweet if we’ve taken the time to make our everydays ones of careful quality and sincere substance.

As you can tell, while Portland has treated me oh so very well, I am quite elated to be going home, snuggling with my boys (so thankful for my dear friend Julia for being their second mom these past few days), sleeping in my own bed and, catching up on a few shows to unwind my mind followed by a paddle on the river with Norman.
