I’m excited for this week because there are a few new movies debuting online including Rebecca on Netflix today, On the Rocks on Apple TV on Friday, and The Undoing on HBO on Sunday.
I watched the adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier’s novel Rebecca today starring Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott Thomas and loved the gothic thriller. The story centers around a young woman meets her husband in Monte Carlo before moving to his imposing family estate, Manderley, on a windswept English coast where she finds herself battling the shadow of his first wife, Rebecca, whose legacy lives on in the house long after her death.
It’s worth watching for the interiors and locations as well as the costumes. It begins with the sun drenched locations of the Ancien Hotel Regina in Nice, the Villa Eilenroc in Antibes, and the Exotic Garden of Monaco, before it moves onto the iconic Manderley for which they had to use multiple properties in England which include Cranborne Manor in Wiltshire, Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, Mapperton House in Dorset, Loseley House in Surrey, Petworth House in West Sussex, Hartland Quay in Devon, Blegberry Farm in Devon, and Osterley House in Isleworth.
I won’t give away the ending for those who never read the novel but I can say that you should never underestimate the quiet ones.
