Artistic Director Kim Jones, and Peter Doig Present Masculine Couture

Dior Fall-Winter 2021-2022

Drawing inspiration from the masculine extravagance of ceremonial garb, Artistic Director Kim Jones reconnects with an ever-dynamic and lively past in the Dior Fall-Winter 2021-2022 collection. Through uniforms of embroidery and embellishment, notably inspired by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, this collection presents a masculine interpretation of couture.

The Maison’s much awaited runway video, thus opened with a glittering gilded embroidered coat, worn over what looked to be a military-influenced, star-buttoned suit. Showcasing an abundance of reinvented decorations and motifs from the Dior archives, the Fall-Winter 2021-2022 collection not only translates the work of Peter Doig into fashion, but represents the product of an intimate collaboration between Jones, Doig and the Dior ateliers.

Having devised motifs and worked by hand on a selection of wool felt hats by Stephen Jones, Peter Doig adds captivating hand-painted designs inspired by his own work, memories, and connections with the house of Dior.

In ideal balance of art and fashion, the collection centers around two animalistic emblems that were specially created by Peter Doig for Dior. These emblems include a likeness of Christian Dior’s dog Bobby, and a lion that simultaneously recalls characters from Doig’s paintings. Presented alongside a masquerade costume made by Pierre Cardin for Christian Dior in 1949, these elements echo the steadfast friendships Mr. Dior had with artists like Jean Cocteau and Christian Bérard, whilst highlighting the passion for art and artistry that the House has always cherished.

Fueled by the desire to create a line of casual yet luxurious street-wearable outerwear, the Dior Fall-Winter 2021-2022 collection is characterized by vibrant hues that express joie de vivre, such as, soft, muted blues, navy, dusky mauve, Dior gray, brilliant yellow, blood-orange and green. With each garment framed as if they themselves were paintings, the Dior Fall-Winter 2021-2022 digital show was presented as an installation of blue skies, designed by Peter Doig.
