Summer Simple Yum: Caprese Salad

I have had a love affair with caprese anything for what feels like forever. With this caprese appetizer being my go-to for guests or just myself, when I saw today’s recipe in Bon Appétit’s recent issue, I couldn’t wait to make it my own. The triumvirate of flavors: tomato, mozzarella and basil, no further perfection is necessary. And when the temperatures begin to rise, nobody wants to step into the kitchen to turn the oven, and with this recipe, you do not have to.

Simply head to your local produce stand or step into your garden, select the freshest tomatoes (the more variety of color and size the better for a eye-catching presentation), pick up your preferred version of mozzarella (I used burrata, which made it a bit creamier and less neat, but the flavor was decadence beyond delight), clip some fresh basil from your herb garden, say hello to your local baker as you pick up a fresh loaf of crusty bread, maybe a bottle of rosé (why not?), find your sea salt, pepper meal and olive oil, and you are set.

Caprese Salad
No oven required. Fresh from the market, add decadence with fresh mozzarella. Add wine, good friends, conversation and voilà!
    Servings6-8 servings
    Prep Time10 minutes
    Passive Time20 minutes
    Ingredients
    • 8tomatoes heirloom, fresh, flavorful, in seasona variety of sizes and colors, whole 1/4" slices, as well as quartered
    • 1/2cup grape tomatoessliced in half
    • 1ball burrata, mozzarella or buffalo mozzarella cheeserip into bite size pieces
    • 1/4cup extra virgin olive oiladd as much or as little to taste (1/4 cup is approximate)
    • sea salt
    • fresh ground pepper
    • fresh artisan crusty bread
    • 1/4cup fresh basilchopped roughly
    Instructions
    1. Slice and tomatoes in a variety of sizes as it will be enjoyed with a knife a fork. However, if you want them all uniform, slice them as you prefer. Presentation with a variety of sizes adds a rustic touch and reveals the variety of different tomatoes included.
    2. Add the pieces of ripped mozzarella. I used burrata which makes the dish appear more creamy and less uniform and neat, but buffalo or regular fresh mozzarella will change keep the neat presentation.
    3. Place tomatoes and mozzarella mixture into the platter you wish to you to serve. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
    4. Let the dish sit for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
    5. Sprinkle fresh basil on top, serve with crusty torn pieces of bread and dive in!

    Remodel Update: Nursery Redesign

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned wanting to transition our nursery into a toddler room. Every time I step in there right now, the space just doesn’t seem to fit the energy and fun that my two year old now embodies. And while I’d prefer to wave my wand and magically transform the entire space all at once, I am in fact a normal human and have to do it in phases.

But it’s perfect. Because as I did with my laundry room refresh oh so many months ago, I’m again partnering with Clorox to transform what is currently a rather sad mess into something awesome. Check it out.

I am going to transfer my kiddo’s closet from hardly functional into the coolest kid hang out space. As you can see in the pic above, we’re lucky in that we have a very large closet in our kiddo’s room. It’s more than 3′ feet wide and 4′ feet deep. That allows not only for ample storage, but for what could be a good sized play space as well. I’m excited to take what is now a rarely used reading corner (we have a good rocker for that) and instead create a beautiful little “art studio” where Carter can hang out, make art and play. While we all know I don’t really do color, I think this could be a fun place to be stack with vibrant display. Especially since I can always close the doors!

I’ve been gathering inspiration of all the ideas I plan to tuck into this space.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

The first to-do is to tackle book storage. Right now Carter’s entire library is crammed onto a few closet shelves. Instead, I’d like to display Carter’s book collection on the wall in an easy-to grab fashion. I love the look of wall-mounted book displays. That solution will also free up shelf space for art supply & toy storage.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

I also want to create a gallery wall in the closet. A fun place to display a combination of family photos, kid friendly art and some Carter originals will add a lot of visual interest and allow me to accentuate the 10 foot ceilings.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

I’m also intrigued by doing some sort of playful design element. Whether it’s simple highlights with washi tape, or a little framed chalkboard, I want to create a mini creative wonderland when you open those closet doors.

Then there is my favorite OCD, over-organizing activity – organizing the shelves. Toys, legos, art supplies  and clothing. I need to maximize all the shelf space, do some fun display ideas and make sure I can store everything. I want to make this space work quadruple duty.

toddler room ideas on Apartment 34

I’m giving myself the month of August to get this little space whipped into shape so be sure to check back. The reveal will be coming!

The Most Valuable Classic Cars Ever Sold at Auction

Car enthusiasts know… purchasing a vintage car is owning a piece of motoring history.  But what are the real benefits?  Not only do you get to hear the sound of a vintage engine rumbling to life, but — like art — you may even get an incredible return on investment.

Research by MoneySuperMarket highlights that classic cars are the best investment for returns, with as much as a 28% return over 12 months – and 467% over 10 years! With those kinds of returns, its no wonder that car buyers have increasingly been more willing to shell out some serious cash for truly iconic cars.

So what are the world’s most valuable classic car sales of all time? While the top prices are primarily dominated by some valuable, vintage Ferraris, here are the top models from each manufacturer when it came to auction sales:

    17. 1956 Maserati 450S Prototype – Sold May 10, 2014 for $4,816,350. The 450S Prototype was tested in the Swedish Grand Prix in August 1956 where the car’s builders continued to tweak its new chassis and make improvements. Now worth $4,873,000.

    16. 1950 GM Futurliner – Sold January 21, 2006 for $4,320,000. GM’s “Parade of Progress” Futurliner buses filled a series of road shows between 1940 and 1956 and only 12 were produced during this era. Now worth $5,132,000.

    15. 1939 Horch 853A Special Roadster – Sold August 17, 2012 for $5,175,000. This car was released in 1939, then imported to the U.S. in the late 1940s by a World War II veteran. Now worth $5,393,000.

    14. 1939 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Torpedo Roadster – Sold March 8, 2014 for $6,600,000. This model is said to be one of two surviving versions of the rare 1939 collectible. Now worth $6,677,000.

    13. 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS – Sold November 21, 2013 for $7,150,000. Talbot-Lago cars have become a top-prized car at various auctions.  Even a factory body sold for over $400,000 in 2013. Now worth $7,351,000.

    12. 1929 4.5-Litre Supercharged ‘Blower’ Bentley – Sold June 29, 2012 for $7,906,745. James Bond drives a 1930 Blower Bentley in three of Ian Fleming’s 007 novels: Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, and Moonraker. Now worth $8,248,000.

    11. 1904 Rolls-Royce 10 hp Two-Seater – Sold December 3, 2007 for $7,254,290. This antique car is the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever bought and is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. Now worth $8,379,000.

    10. 1982 Porsche 956 – Sold August 17, 2015 for $10,120,000. In 1983, this car holds the all-time record for the fastest vehicle ever to lap Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the 12.93 mile circuit in 6:11.13. Now worth $10,225,000.

    9. 1931 Duesenberg Model J Long Wheelbase Coupe – Sold August 21, 2011 for $10,340,000. Fewer than 500 of these were even made and were designed to cater to their exclusive and luxurious clientele. Now worth $11,008,000.

    8. 1968 Ford GT40 – Sold August 17, 2012 for $11,000,000. The name GT40 was introduced as the name of Ford’s project to prepare their cars for the international endurance racing circuit. Now worth $11.475.000.

    7. 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra – Sold August 19, 2016 for $13,750,000.  This Shelby Cobra made the record books for being the most expensive American car ever sold at auction, beating the Ford GT40 in 2012. Now worth $13,750,000.

    6.  1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato – Sold December 10, 2015 for $14,300,000.   At this auction, the DB4GT became the most expensive British car ever sold at auction, beating the McLaren F1 sold previously that year. Now worth $14,449,000.

    5. 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider – Sold August 20, 2016 for $19,800,000.  This was the highest price ever paid for a pre-Second World War car at public auction. Now worth $19,800,000.

    4.  1932 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe – Sold November 17, 1987 for $9,800,000.  Under its hood it packs one of the largest engines to ever feature in a car. Now worth about $20,659,000.

    3.  1955 Jaguar D-Type – Sold August 19, 2016 for $21,780,000.  A conqueror of Le Mans in 1955, 56, and 57. Now worth $21,780,000.

    2.  1954 Mercedes Benz W196 – Sold July 12, 2013 for $29,600,000.  This one won 9 of the 12 Formula One races in which it was entered and both of the World Championships in which it competed.  Now worth $30,433,000.

    1.  1962 Ferrari 250 GTO – Sold August 14, 2014 for $38,115,000. This one, made specifically for Formula One racer Sir Stirling Moss, was 2nd in production of only 36 made. Now worth $38,560,000.

MoneySupermarket.com conducted its research of the most expensive classic cars sold at auction throughout the years, highlighting only the most prominent brands of classic cars and models produced before 1990. They were ranked according to the current equivalent value of their auction price.

    Humphrey Munson Dream Kitchen

New York kitchens are notoriously small. That’s why we have so many restaurant and delivery options. My own small kitchen is why I’m obsessed with normal sized kitchens online. This Humphrey Munson kitchen isn’t even in a real house. It’s their new St. Albans Showroom Spenlow Kitchen designed by Peter Humphrey, the Design Director and Founder of Humphrey Munson.  I’m pretty sure the fridge is bigger than my entire kitchen. I don’t even drink that much coffee but all I want in life now is a dedicated coffee cabinet. This is definitely the ultimate dream kitchen.

“If you want to change your partner, change yourself.” —Esther Perel, relationship psychotherapist and best-selling author

~Enjoy TSLL’s first book Choosing The Simply Luxurious Life: A Modern Woman’s Guide in audio format on Audible, iTunes, and Amazon.

The unexpected adventure you embark upon when you step into a relationship with a potential life partner is that you embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Of course, we can and should go on sojourns of self-discovery before we choose to step into a relationship, but because of the nature of a romantic relationship, often our less developed and tender spots don’t fully become exposed. After all, when we care for someone and see potential for spending our future with them and they with us, we experience emotions at a more intense level than we may have before and perhaps emotions we may had never experienced before.

Whether you are in a relationship that has been seen years together, are just beginning to get to know one another or not in a relationship at all except the one with yourself, understand what Esther Perel reminds us all of above.

If we enter into a relationship in hopes of finding someone who will fill a place in our lives, do what we need them to do and forget that a relationship involves two human beings made up of emotions, aspirations, perceived as well as real limitations, than we need to step back from stepping into a relationship in order to have a healthy relationship down the road.

A simple understood truth that most people accept is nobody is perfect, but sometimes we skip over this truth and jump to assumptions and high expectations rather than coming to understand the person we are involved with and finding the strength to truthfully express who we are and our curiosities as well as our boundaries.

Let’s take a look at at what love, real love unveils and asks of us as well.

    Truths to understand

1.You must become a good partner in order to have the opportunity to find and begin to grow a healthy relationship.

I must first say, you do not have to have it all figured out when it comes to relationships, what improvements you need to make, etc., etc.. What I mean is that you must come into a relationship as someone who is content in their own company. Someone who is self-aware and therefore also aware of who might make a good partner. Your ability to communicate clearly, as well as be willing to be vulnerable, but also confident and assured so as not to be taken advantage of.

    2. A healthy relationship which requires being involved with a secure partner, will provide the opportunity to see faults in ourselves

While we are imperfect beings, the truth is when we live on our own or we live in relationships that are not truly intimate, we can refrain from confronting what is obstructing our path to reaching our fullest potential. However, when the carrot of a loving relationship is set before us, we will have moments of opportunity to recognize where can do better. In those moments, take time to reflect, and if necessary, communicate with an objective or trusting third party that will give you tools to shift or change what is no longer working.

    3. From time to time we will fall back on defaults that are unhelpful

However, the key is recognize these instances when they occur, and gradually with mindful attention, understanding why you do so, choosing a new action that is helpful and healthy rather than hurtful and destructive.

    4. High emotional intelligence will not only help you but your partner, and visa versa

Becoming someone who can accurately identify how they feel and why they feel the way they do is a step in the direction of refraining from acting unnecessarily on emotions that will soon pass or you are feeling based on past experiences and not due to what is actually and who is actually with you in the present moment. Similarly, when you can do this for yourself, you can then begin to better accurately observe those around you and while not always telling them you know what and why they’re doing what they are doing, knowing when it would be helpful and when it would not be.

    5. Courage & bravery are required

Initially, these may be viewed as the same skill, but the repetition is necessary. We will need to be courageous to reveal who we truly are, what we actually need and be honest about where we can let go. And we will also have to be brave to open our lives up to an individual who is not as well known to us as we know ourselves.

    6. It’s easy to react. It’s more difficult to respond.

However, with thoughtful practice, responding can become your default rather than reacting. It just takes conscious effort. Learn more about the difference between reacting and responding here.

    What the journey will involve

1.Both partners consistently choosing to figure out how to best make the relationship work and work well for both individuals involved, as well as for the relationship they want to build together.

What do you want? What does your partner want? What do we want as a couple? Have these conversations, don’t be shy. Talk calmly and when you’re ready. Explain what makes you feel loved, explain what makes you feel anxious. Talk through it and work through it. Time is often needed as you begin to mesh and move together through life, but communication of what works for you, where you can compromise and where you cannot is the only way to best make a relationship work for both individuals in a partnership.

    2. A choice to love beyond the surface

Exterior appearances can be beguiling, enticing and eye-catching. However, as adults, we can appreciate beauty from afar because we recognize that the beauty we see with our eyes is not the only nor the most significant beauty one can possess.

    3. Choosing to treat your partner lovingly even during frustrating times

It will take a conscious choice to respond rather than react. Being aware of how we are feeling, why we are feeling and not being led around by our emotions is key to maintaining and growing stable, healthy relationships.

    4. Moments of deep breaths and time on your own to work through new feelings, circumstances, conflicts, etc.

Everything that isn’t working out in this moment doesn’t need to be solved in this moment (even though we might want it to be because of the uncertainty and anguish it is causing). When we understand our emotions, when we understand ourselves well, we will also be stronger to step away from a conversation that may be highly charged due to a variety of reasons, respectfully explain you need a walk, or some time to collect your thoughts or something to indicate, that you will not move on for good, but you need to step back for now to gain some perspective and come back with a calm and clear head.

    5. Understanding that our partner is not perfect

We know this logically, but when we meet and begin to build a relationship with someone, it’s natural to have high hopes. The key is to have hope rather than expectation. If we default to expectations, we set traps to fall through and get caught. But if we have hope, we are remaining optimistic while being open to what may be.

    6. Perspective of what is truly important

There will be moments during a relationship when things don’t work out as you had hoped and disappointment arises. Perhaps not because of anything either partner could control, and while it is okay to express disappointment, it is also important to put it into perspective with the entire journey you are on together. Will this matter 1 year from now? Will it matter 10 years from now? Simple questions to ask yourself to enable you to not blow small hiccups into ginormous struggles.

Sharing and feeling love with another person is a journey, none of which are exactly alike. And I think keeping that fact in mind is key. Key as well is understanding that your vision of a healthy, happy relationship may be slightly or drastically different from your partners and the only way to discover this is to communicate and begin to reveal your lives together, your real selves, yes, your best selves, but knowing that we will have off days and even in those days our best selves will be different.

Love asks us to look within and examine ourselves. This can be scary, but often when something is scary it is life’s way of saying, look a little closer, examine what is really going on because in so doing, you will set yourself free.

Sushi on Sloane Street at Sumosan Twiga

Always on the look out for new and different places, Mr S and I were excited to be invited to review the new Sumosan Twiga in Knightsbridge, having missed the opportunity to try the contemporary Japanese food when the Mayfair branch closed. Located in a super-chic townhouse on Sloane Street (near Prada, Valentino and Jimmy Choo – don’t arrive early it could be dangerous) it’s located across three floors with a nightclub in the basement – the idea being that you spend your whole night under one roof.

A little different to the London predecessor and to the Moscow original founded by Janina Wolkow. The restaurant serves the contemporary Japanese menu that the brand is known for but also includes an Italian menu as part of a collaboration with Flavio Briatore founder of Italian beach club, Twiga. I know what you’re thinking, a restaurant serving an Italian menu AND a Japanese menu, isn’t that a little random? Well I was open-minded as a restaurant serving my two favourite cuisines could be something great – and of course you can order all from one menu or you’re free to mix and match.

The decor is pretty too and as well as Asian and European touches, there are African references due to Flavio Briatore’s love of Kenya where he also has a resort. We even recognised photos on the wall of Giraffe Manor which we fell in love with on trip last October.

Our starting nibbles reflected the two different cuisines available at the restaurant, a really good and varied bread basket and some delicious salty edamame beans.
As huge lovers of Asian food we decided to stick mainly to the Japanese food that Sumosan is known for. In fact Head Chef Konstantin Tskhay from the Mayfair restaurant continues at the new location and has put together a menu of favourites as well as new dishes. We loved the gyoza with wagyu and a tasty dipping sauce though I found the wasabi prawns a little less successful as there was a little too much of the very sweet mango and passion fruit salsa.

Salmon pizza on crispy rice with bonito powder was a really tasty fusion food and something a little different to usual Japanese fare.
Our only savoury dish from the Italian menu was a regular favourite of ours, artichoke and parmesan salad. Chef Ferdinando Palomba  has been hired to oversee the Italian menu, and this artichoke salad was so tasty and fresh that we regretted not ordering more of his food!

The J Secret platter was a surprise combination of sashimi and featured my favourites, tuna, salmon, sea bass and prawns in piquant sauce.
Spicy tuna is always my top choice when it comes to sushi, and the rolls ticked all the boxes. The Billionaire’s roll with Wagyu beef and truffle was lovely in itself but again I thought the pool of sweet sauce was unnecessary.
The miso black cod was the standout dish of the night with beautifully succulent flesh that flaked apart perfectly. We also loved the teriyaki chicken that was juicy and full of flavour.
Miso aubergine is a dish that can go horribly wrong but at Sumosan Twiga it was prepared perfectly and not overly sweet as it can be. The ideal vegetable accompaniment to the other dishes.
Dinner at Sumosan Twiga simply has to end with the fondant under a spun sugar dome and delicious molten chocolate oozed out of this beautifully prepared sponge. Our other dessert of apple crumble with pecans is a dessert we’ll always order on if we see it on the menu and that was delicious too.

Overall we had a really tasty meal at Sumosan Twiga and it’s great to see a sushi hotspot among the fashionable boutiques of Sloane Street.
