Private Jets Going Strong Despite the Global Pandemic

Bombardier Global 5500 aircraft

Vaccination programmes are well underway across many countries, and with each passing day, we approach closer to life that bears similarity to what it was like before the onset of the global pandemic. When news broke out about the growing number of Covid-19 cases, governments were prompt on shutting down their borders to prevent any further spread of the virus. It is a global effort that all countries participated in to protect their citizens and in exchange, our freedom to travel was forsaken.

We have crossed the one-year mark since any scheduled aircraft operations were conducted and according to an article by the Financial Times, “[commercial air travels] were down 50 per cent by February 23 compared with the same period in 2020 — the last time flying was normal.” While commercial flights were grounded, private aviation only experienced an 11% drop with the largest dip stemming from Europe as compared to North America. As a result, many commercial airlines were forced to declare bankruptcy and their employees had to be made redundant or quit their jobs due to the lack of flights available. On the other hand, private flights boomed because of the convenience this mode of travel can provide for its passengers.

Despite sluggish economic performances, demand for private jets is seeing an upward trend. Source: WingX/ Financial Times

In America alone, sales of pre-owned private jets account for more than 70% of the global market and in 2020, 1,637 jets were sold and this figure represented a 10% increase. Globally, the sector saw a 7.7% rise in its sales which amounts to over US$14.5 billion, showing that those part of the upper echelons are more than willing to pay for their “lost” freedom.

The appeal for private charted flights is obvious. At the top of the list would be safety because there are fewer than 700 touchpoints and person-to-person interactions; hence, exposure to the Covid-19 virus is kept to a minimum. Another reason is the availability of infrequent routes that have been cut short by commercial airlines because these destinations are not economically viable if they were to be retained. This opens up a market for private jet companies to fill in as its very nature is to cater to the demands of its passengers, therefore slowly replacing commercial airlines in providing this specialised service.

“The sale of preowned private aircraft has held up well because the benefits of flying privately have been clearly illustrated during the coronavirus crisis,” said Oliver Stone, the managing director of Colibri Aircraft.

In an interview with the Straits Times, the director of the International Air Transport Association (Iata) stated that personal travel will probably resume by the second half of 2021, “We will likely start seeing a change in the air travel landscape after May or June this year.” Even before this statement was published, the general public was already experiencing a serious case of cabin fever, but not everyone has the privilege and monetary capabilities to act upon their desire to travel. Even so, there is still a growing appetite for private travel in spite of the the higher costs because the peace of mind that accompanies this mode of travel is an experience that rarely comes by and this is what has enticed many potential passengers to complete their purchase.

Despite the rise in demand for private travel, could all this just be a fad? The adverse impact of using private jets are well-known such as its sustainability and environmental problems. A report by the Global Environmental Change revealed that “private air travel is the most energy-intense form of flight”. Private jets usually have a smaller passenger size and this makes it difficult for any feasible justifications to be accepted due to the high carbon costs.

As even more attention is given to the issues associated with the environment, immense pressure will no doubt be placed on these private jet companies and their manufacturers. However, this has not deterred potential passengers and these companies have all taken steps to address any concerns. One such company is Bombardier, which has committed to be carbon-neutral by 2050 and a keen advocator of sustainable aviation fuels since 2017. The company has made sustainability to be one of its core missions and spare no effort in innovating new forms techonology to meet its abovementioned goals. Being a market-leader, Bombardier is also slowly changing the perception of the private jet industry to one that is more environmentally friendly.

Where the most of us are bounded to the ground, the rise of private aviation can be seen as a collective desire to explore freely again. For a large part of us who are living comfortably, the thought of travelling came almost naturally, we could just purchase an air ticket and off we go but the pandemic has turned it all upside down for us. We are reminded that the ability to travel is always a privilege.

If you are done with this article, head over to read what we have predicted to be the travel trends for 2021.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Completes Reconfiguration

Render of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove’s reconfiguration

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore has completed its S$7 million (about US$5.2 million) marina reconfiguration project. All new and relocated superyacht berths are now stern-to in front of the clubhouse, providing a spectacular view for members, guests and visitors.

While keeping the total number of berths at 272, the new layout increases the berths for 80ft-plus superyachts from 15 to 33 and increases the overall linear footage of yachts moored within the marina. Furthermore, the marina has a new channel with a minimum depth of 4.5m and can accommodate yachts up to 220ft (67m), while other changes include the relocation of Boaters’ Bar, Singapore’s only floating marina bar.

Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO of SUTL Enterprise, which owns the ONE°15 Marina brand, said: “ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is well on its way to becoming the region’s number one superyacht pit stop. One of the main objectives of the reconfiguration was to cater for the projected trend of increasing yacht sizes by significantly extending our marina’s berthing flexibility.”

The marina includes brand-new pontoons designed in Singapore and manufactured in France, as well as state-of-the-art service pedestals made of marine-grade anodised aluminium by Rolec Services in the UK. Other new features include a fuel-management mobile application, remote meter reading and automated billing services.

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove opened in 2007

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove has been established among Asia’s finest since it was inaugurated in 2007, when it secured 5 Gold Anchor certification, and in June 2019 it became Singapore’s first private marina to have a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facility. However, Tay said the reconfiguration was important as yacht sizes and needs had significantly changed.

“Our previous marina infrastructure had been pushed way beyond its original design parameters, given the trend of increasing yacht sizes and minimum power requirements over the past decade,” Tay said.

“With the marina experiencing close to full occupancy all year round, the reconfiguration project has been a challenging feat to pull off yet a necessary one for us to provide greater convenience to our existing customers and keep up with market demands.”

GROWING THE BRAND

As ONE°15 Marina’s first and flagship property, Sentosa Cove sets the benchmark for the brand around Asia and even globally, as the company operates the ONE°15 Marina Brooklyn in New York.

ONE°15 Estuari Sports Centre (above) opened in October 2020

In Malaysia, across the Johor Strait from northwest Singapore, the brand operates ONE°15 Marina Puteri Harbour, which offers dual membership with the ONE°15 Estuari Sports Centre that opened last October. An ongoing redevelopment of a previous facility in the Iskandar Puteri waterfront, Puteri Harbour includes a public marina with 76 berths including three for superyachts.

Meanwhile, construction continues on Puteri Harbour’s private marina, which will feature 207 berths and 11 superyacht berths. The adjoining marina is scheduled to open in 2023 along with a clubhouse, hotel rooms, ballroom, restaurant, floating bar, conference and meeting rooms, a spa and fitness centre.

ONE°15 Marina Puteri Harbour includes a private marina to open in 2023

Also close to Singapore, ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island in Indonesia is scheduled to open in 2022. Located on a private island just 8nm south of Sentosa, the marina will have 70 berths including for superyachts, a clubhouse and sea sports centre, plus fuelling and bunkering services.

The marina will also benefit from neighbouring a five-star resort featuring hotel rooms, villas and water villas, managed by Accor’s M Gallery Hotel Collection.

Located south of Singapore, ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island will open in 2022

ONE°15 Marina’s other projects in Indonesia include the Indonesia Navy Club managed by ONE°15 Marina, which is based in Pantai Mutiara, an exclusive waterfront district in north Jakarta facing the Thousand Islands archipelago.

More recently, ONE15 Management & Technical Services, an SUTL Enterprise subsidiary, began a consultancy project in Bali, providing a marina-feasibility study and advisory services to PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III, a state-owned enterprise operating and managing 43 ports in seven provinces. As well as evaluating the suitability of the area for developing marinas, the project will include assessing Bali as a potential site for a new ONE°15 Marina.

The brand also operates in China, where its portfolio includes the 158-berth ONE°15 Marina Logan Cove Zhongshan near Hong Kong, while upcoming developments include the 140-berth Taihu International Marina managed by ONE°15 Marina, situated on Lake Tai in Suzhou, west of Shanghai.

Taihu International Marina managed by ONE°15 Marina

“We are very excited about the expansion of our iconic ONE°15 Marina brand,” Tay said. “To grow our network, we’ve adopted a two-pronged strategy. The first is to seek opportunities to consult on marinas being developed, with the end goal of putting our brand on them and managing them. At the same time, we are looking to acquire established marinas that we can transform and rebrand.

“With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we expect industry conditions to remain challenging. However, we are cautiously optimistic about the return of tourism and economic growth as Covid-19 restrictions are gradually lifted and vaccination programmes are carried out worldwide.”

The Louvre’s Art Collection is Available Online for Free Browsing

Image Credit: Courtesy of Irina Lediaeva on Unsplash

Last Friday, the Musée du Louvre announced that its entire collection of artworks would be available online for all to freely browse. Before the release of the Collection, members of the public only had access to about 30,000 of the Louvre’s plethora of artworks. Now, people will be able to freely access all 482,000 pieces in the Collection as well as any associated research. The Collection is made up of art from the museum’s eight departments and ranges from famous paintings, to Egyptian antiquities, to Renaissance and Islamic art.

In a statement regarding the creation of the online database, President-Director of the Mussée du Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez said, “For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage.”

Apart from pieces in the Louvre’s catalogue, the online database will also include works from the Musée National Eugène-Delacroix, the Tuileries and Carrousel gardens sculptures, in addition to artworks under the Musées Nationaux Récupération (MNR) project, referring to pieces looted by Nazis in World War Two that are currently awaiting restitution.

Navigating the Collection is simple, allowing visitors to look up works through simple or advanced research, entries by each of the eight curatorial departments, as well as themed albums. It also includes an interactive map in English, French, Spanish, and Chinese, where visitors will be able to explore the Musée du Louvre room by room and learn about the works housed in each.

With this latest move, the Musée du Louvre has given audiences around the world more than just free access to browse some of the world’s greatest works of art. What they are getting is unfettered access to knowledge about the world, its environment and humanity’s various cultures at different periods in time, as seen through the eyes of our greatest artists and embodied through their chosen craft, tirelessly honed over decades.

At this point, the Collection can be browsed using either a computer, tablet or smartphone and will continue to grow as staff at the Louvre continue to update and expand upon the existing database, giving visitors ever greater access to knowledge and information. In addition, this would entice more people to start planning a trip to the French museum post-COVID-19. “I am sure that this digital content is going to further inspire people to come to the Louvre to discover the collections in person,” said Martinez.

Warehouses: The Dark Horse of Commercial Property

While the pandemic temporarily suspended the demand for office and retail properties, residential, industrial properties and warehouses have remained buoyant. Lockdown was a good reminder of the intrinsic relationship between our everyday habits and behaviours and an asset’s value. largemortgageloans.com specialises in financing commercial developments. Paul Welch, CEO of largemortgageloans.com comments, “It’s a great time to invest in industrial property such as sheds and warehouses– especially near towns and cities. There is a burgeoning demand for storage space from occupiers such as online retail corporations such as Amazon. Sheds are relatively easy to build and investor-friendly. Securing a lease with Amazon or any similar online retail services could result in a high return.

According to the RICS commercial property and survey report, during Q3 of 2020, capital value and rental projections in the industrial sector showed positive signs. It is hardly surprising when we factor in the accelerated digital transformation undergone on a macro level due to the pandemic.

An influx in online shopping changes in consumer behaviour caused by the acceleration of digital transformation due to the pandemic has resulted in a higher demand for industrial, commercial buildings in logistics and distribution, such as warehouses and big sheds. The short window for delivery is narrowing.

Consumers’ expectation is that a manufacturer will drop a parcel on their doorstep in under 24 hours is a benchmark set by Amazon, and if competitors want to keep up, the window of delivery is narrowing. There is an expectation that drones will do the heavy lifting for us. While this will free up roads and reduce traffic, the demand for storage will not cease. Order patterns, higher volumes, speedier delivery, and narrowing margins ensure that warehouse space is being used more efficiently than ever before. Land in suitable locations is in short supply, which is why the UK is likely to end up moving towards multi-storey warehousing, particularly in London, where the demand is at its highest.

Overseas capital is familiar with multi-storey warehousing and less likely to be wary about snapping up a multi-story property. In the UK, this idea is a relatively new concept. Development that integrates a sustainable output will be desirable as the Government continues to move towards the carbon-neutral agenda for 2025 to tackle climate change. Smart packaging will also be trending, as more businesses will look for more ways to create a circular economy. Developers that look to future-proof warehouse space with sustainable environmental technology will be more attractive to those seeking a long-term lease.

Image Credit: Courtesy of CHUTTERSNAP on Unsplash

Sheds, warehouses and factories values are dependent on the location (proximity to major road systems and key population areas) and the size and layout. A majority of warehouse space is located either near town or city centres or within the ‘Golden triangle’ in the UK’s centre. The value is also driven by how accessible it is by sea, air, road or rail. For example, warehouses with easy access to Junction 18 will be in the upper end of the priced bracket due it’s accessible location. If you are considering developing, it would be worth looking into changes in infrastructure. Emerging locations with good connections will be prime property- snap it up before it’s too late.

According to statistica, large industrial sheds are cheaper per square foot than small sheds, with prices varying between 16 GBP in Heathrow, to 3 GBP in remote locations such as Aberdeen. Warehouse units which are valued the highest are located in Heathrow, Greenford, and Hayes, all of which are within close proximity to Heathrow airport.

Construction and Development

One of the significant advantages of sheds and warehouses is that they are relatively cheaper to build than other commercial property. This is partly because they take less time to create, and materials are much less expensive. Their modular design makes them multi-functional. As they are so simple to build, it is easy to reconfigure the layout or to deconstruct entirely.

Image Credit: Courtesy of Ruchindra Gunasekara on Unsplash

Unlike other structures built for specific purposes, sheds can be converted into retail, office, warehouse or storage spaces. With the materials being so cheap and easy to install, they can adapt to any business’ needs. They can even be aesthetically pleasing if adapting the shed to be residential or retail space. The most common industrial sheds are made with galvanised steel resistant to rust and corrosion, making them cheap to maintain and great for potential investors.

Triple Net Leases (NNN)

It is possible to have leases that last several years with industrial sheds, which can be beneficial to the landlord as there is less hassle to find new tenants frequently. Also, triple net leases, which aren’t available for residential properties, are another attractive benefit to investing in commercial property. These leases absolve the landlord of most of the property expenses, and things like insurance, property taxes, and structural maintenance become part of the tenant’s expenses.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT – A Champagne Diamond

Oftentimes a retailer exclusive timepiece is decided upon based upon years of trust and confidence built up between a manufacture and its business partners. In the case of the Grand Seiko SBGE267G the partner in question is the Thong Sia Group. For decades, the group has been the gateway for citizens of Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei to access Grand Seiko and Seiko timepieces. At the heart of the success between the Seiko Watch Corporation and the Thong Sia Group is the newly released Spring Drive GMT Grand Seiko model.

The SBGE267G is released on the back of the SBGE201, and is the bigger cousin of this year’s 40.5mm trio of SBGE253, SBGE255, and SBGE257. Though it is released under the Grand Seiko Sport collection, the SBGE267G appears resolutely dressy thanks to its unique colour combination, for which Thong Sia Group is responsible.

An uncommon shade of brown that bears more than a passing resemblance to the colour of leather straps envelopes the dial and bezel. It is a colour that represents the Earth and signifies simplicity and stability. The warm sunburst dial resonates a sense of maturity and elegance elevated by ornate champagne gold embellishments on the hour and minute hands, and watch indices.

Printed on the dial is the famed “Spring Drive” text that placed Grand Seiko in the high esteem of numerous collectors. As the good folks of Hodinkee put it, Spring Drive is neither categorised as an automatic or manual winding movement, but instead warrants a classification on its own thanks to the presence of electrical components. The result is an effortless seconds hand sweeping motion unlike any other and a daily ±1 second accuracy deviation bordering on quartz precision. Without taking a deep dive into Spring Drive movements (it will take a few pages), the Spring Drive calibre 9R66 features a handy GMT complication to keep track of a second time zone. Unlike the rotating GMT bezel variants that tracks up to three time zones, the SBGE267G utilises a fixed ceramic GMT bezel that is read off via the white fourth hand. Other notable features of the calibre is the signature power reserve on the dial and a 72-hour power reserve.

Meeting The Master
From the legendary stable of elite Milanese designers is Rodolfo Dordoni, whose vast repertoire of design products – furniture, lighting and accessories – are famed for their elegance, essentiality and innovative details. Born in 1954 in Milan, Dordoni graduated with a degree in architecture from the Polytechnic of Milan in 1979. From the start of his career, Dordoni has already made an impact charting the art direction and corporate identity for the who’s who in the high-end Italian design industry – Artemide, Cappellini, Fortana Arte, Foscarini, and Roda to name a few.

Best known for his work with Dolce & Gabbana, Dordoni since 1995 has been involved in all aspects of its image coordination starting from its headquarters in Milan to its showrooms and boutiques all over the world. In 2005, he founded Dordoni Architect Studios with architects Alessandro Acerbi and Luca Zaniboni, which focuses on residential and commercial architectural planning and interior design. Dordoni’s success could be attributed to his deep and traditional approach to the process of design and production which includes the development of image strategies, product concepts, design and development of product marketing. The result? Objects that emphasise structure, proportion and elegant functionality are the unmistakable signatures of Dordoni’s designs.

Dordoni took on the role of art director of Minotti in 1998. The relationship between Dordoni and the Minotti brothers, Renato and Roberto, is deeply rooted, and the trio shares the same aesthetic principles and creative style – blending tradition and technology to produce the finest “Made in Italy” products. One of Dordoni’s most unforgettable collection for Minotti was the 2010 collection dubbed “Senza Tempo”. His designs reinforce Minotti’s philosophy for quality and unique designs based on fine, Italian-made details. The exquisitely beautiful collection – comprising sofas, armchairs, tables, cabinets, and bookshelves – is sophisticated, versatile and evokes the hallmarks of durability, quality and ever-lasting comfort.

The 2019 Collection
The new collection coordinated by Rodolfo Dordoni with Minotti Studio brings new vision into living environments – where seating systems and other furniture pieces bring out the spatial aesthetics of the room while revealing intriguing geometries of curves and straight lines. Dordoni and his team endeavour to create furniture pieces that express a design narrative to be practical and dynamic, especially with today’s discerning homeowners. Dordoni also welcomes design greats who are well-known in their merits into the Minotti stable: Christophe Delcourt from France, Nendo from Japan and Marcio Kogan / studio mk27 from Brazil, and the début creations of Danish studio GamFratesi. Collectively, these talents have become part of the “Minotti project”; enhancing the new collection, thereby creating a renewed stylistic code to cater to international tastes. Silent Resorts – Resort Living with Silent-Yachts

Building on the solar technology developed for Silent-Yachts catamarans, Silent Resorts is launching its new brand of yacht-and-villa resorts in the Caribbean, with Asia among
target destinations as the company looks to grow a global network of eco-friendly waterfront properties.

As the world leader in solar-electric luxury catamarans, Silent-Yachts has a particularly global vision. The brand’s Silent 55 is built in China. Its new Silent 60 is being built in Thailand. And several units of its flagship 80 are under construction in Italy, where more 60s are being built to cope with demand for what’s already the brand’s best-selling model. Check out the Silent 80 here!

Artist’s rendering of how Silent Yachts
are moored at the pier to access the island.

Yet before hull one of either the 60 or 80 have touched the water, Austrian Michael Kohler, the company’s founder and CEO, joined forces with American architect Victor Barrett to create Silent Resorts. The mission? To develop solar-powered beachfront resorts incorporating Silent catamarans as floating suites.

Designed to be sustainable, eco-friendly and built with a ‘light touch’, the futuristic resorts are more than just a cute concept. It’s happening, starting in the Bahamas with the 30-acre “Silent Island” in the district of North Eleuthera, which has its own airport and is a 55-minute flight east of Miami.

The Bahamas resort has been designed to offer eight Silent catamarans and 16 villas, with the first few units scheduled to be ready by late 2021. The property will include a clubhouse, spa, pool and water toys, all eco-friendly. The tagline is “Live Fully, Tread Lightly, Stay Silently”.

Aerial view of a Silent Resorts unit using solar panels.

Along with its catamarans, Silent-Yachts is also supplying the solar-powered technology that will power the villas and common facilities for a fully integrated, carbon-free property. In fact, its catamaran designs have even influenced the villa designs, according to Barrett, CEO of Silent Resorts.

“We’re designing the one-storey villas to mirror the catamaran design, with two suites on either side of a big open living room and kitchen. You can also have a staircase to the sunset deck or “flybridge” on top, very similar to the way the catamarans are laid out,” says Barrett.

“You can start your vacation on the yacht and finish in a villa, if you want, or the other way around. The power systems on the villas and yachts are matched, so they can balance themselves. When a yacht pulls up to the resort, they can plug in for power or even deliver excess power to the island. It’s a very symbiotic and balanced system.” What a treat for Silent-Yacht owners!

MEETING OF MINDS
Like Kohler, Barrett has a global outlook and has ties to Austria and the African island nation of Mauritius, where he founded his company TrueDesign. He has worked on developments in the USA, Mexico, Caribbean, UAE, Africa and Asia including in Indonesia and China, where he spent two years as a Senior Architectural Designer for Atkins.

Having worked on luxury resorts for the likes of Six Senses, Como and Aman, he was working for the TradeWinds yacht charter company until this year, building a beach club in the southern Caribbean until Covid-19 halted development. It was then he returned to Austria and pitched his idea for Silent Resorts to Kohler, having become friends after becoming aware of Silent-Yachts through their presence at a boat show in Miami.

“I thought there must be a better way to build resorts on these islands,” Barrett says. “That’s when I called Michael and said, how about using your yachts as villas for these beautiful remote locations so we don’t really damage the islands.”

Rendering of Villa living concept at Silent Resorts.

Kohler was receptive to the concept, having previously approached luxury resorts with the idea of buying Silent catamarans as an added attraction for cruising trips and extra rooms when required.

“When Victor told me more about his idea, I was very happy because it was a better version of what we were previously trying to do with resorts,” Kohler said.

Silent Resorts offers a flexible solution that includes pre-engineered villas and accompanying infrastructure, the docking system and Silent solar-electric catamarans serving as floating sustainable villas for guests.

“With Silent Resorts, we have a green approach from the start,” Kohler says. “All the components of one villa are in one container. We put it together and there’s no waste material, nothing to contaminate the island or bay. We can take it away at any time, which is what we mean by reversible.

“It’s a much more flexible system with almost no negative impact on the environment. Whatever we bring, we can remove. It’s a very, very smart idea that Victor had and a perfect match for our Silent catamarans.”

BRIGHT FUTURE
Silent Resorts is working on a membership model, so each member has access to the resort for six weeks a year.

“A member can say I’m coming for 10 days and I want to spend five days in the villa and five on a yacht,” Barret says. “That yacht can move around and move around the region, stay in a cove overnight, go where you want. There are thousands of islands nearby like the Exumas nearby and you can choose your itinerary daily. The guest experience is unique.”

Rendering of how a Silent Yacht can receive passengers from the seafront villas.

Silent Resorts is looking to build its network in exclusive beachfront and island locations all around the world, and states that a turnkey resort can be operational in 18 months or less in any location worldwide.

“For the Bahamas resort, the US is an obvious target market for members, but we’re getting interest from all over the world. Europe is the next big market, so we’re looking for something in the Mediterranean and maybe the Middle East,” Barrett says.

“We want to circumnavigate the globe, so we’re considering Asia – especially Indonesia – as well as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the South Pacific. The plan is to have five more resorts around the globe within five years. When you become a member of one location, you can use any of the locations.” Read more about this resort here.

Celebrate F1 Season in Bahrain With the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Collection

TAG Heuer’s history with Formula 1 started in 1968 when Jack Heuer, great-grandson of the brand’s founder, signed their first sponsorship agreement with the venerable Swiss racing driver, Jo Siffert. Their logo, proudly shown on Siffert’s car and racing suit, became a prominent sight on the racetrack, influencing many other drivers to don TAG Heuer’s timepieces. In this way, TAG Heuer’s association with F1 was cemented. In 1986, the watch manufacture launched the original Formula 1 collection featuring an innovative fibreglass-coated stainless-steel case, adorned with bright colours and a Swiss quartz movement. The novel appointments resulted from unrestrained experimentation that gave birth to many of TAG Heuer’s other iconic designs. In 2021, the collection is still going strong with 4 new models being released to celebrate the start of the F1 season in Bahrain.

The 2021 line-up consists of three new chronographs and a three-hand model. All sport a 43mm steel case, ceramic bezel, asphalt-textured dial, and of course, vivid colours reminiscent of F1 cars. With the new additions to the Formula 1 collection, TAG Heuer kept its classic bold orange colouration, dating back to the 1970s and Jack Heuer’s famed “Orange Boy” Autavia, and introduced a new lime yellow. Both colours contrast beautifully with the black dial and ceramic bezel, giving the timepieces a cheeky, sporty look, that is at home both on the street or the track. Apart from the intrepidly urban aesthetic, the sharp contrast in colours also work with the Super-LumiNova coated hands and markers to ensure superior legibility in all conditions, giving the wearer the freedom to confidently explore any environment.

Of the four models, the three-hand watch (ref. WAZ101A.FC8305) stands out the most for several reasons. The most obvious difference is the lack of a chronograph complication, resulting in a less cluttered dial. Secondly, while its dial is asphalt-textured like the rest, it abandons the black for a vibrant shade of orange. It also sports a different bezel from the rest. The black ceramic unidirectional bezel has a 60 minute scale to track elapsed time, giving this timepiece a more diver-inspired look. An aesthetic enhanced by a sapphire crystal, protected screw-down crown and 200 metres of water resistance. TAG Heuer made the ref. WAZ101A.FC8305 different from the others in its Formula 1 collection as this is meant to be an online exclusive available only through their web boutique, made in a limited batch of 4,000 pieces.

Moving to the chronographs, in terms construction and materials used, they are virtually identical to the three-hand model, featuring stainless-steel cases, sapphire crystals, black ceramic bezels, screw-down crown, and 200 metres of water resistance. Where they differ is in functionality. Compared to the diver-inspired aesthetics of the previous watch, these timepieces are based off those used by racing drivers since time immemorial. The chronograph complication allows users a convenient way of tracking elapsed time and laps, while the fixed tachymeter bezel provides a means with which to measure speed and distance travelled. Both functions are indispensable for professional racers, and highlight TAG Heuer’s close relationship with racing.

The chronographs are available with either orange indexes and a steel bracelet (ref. CAZ101AH.BA0842), or in lime yellow with a bracelet (ref. CAZ101AG.BA0842) or a harness-inspired nylon strap (ref. CAZ101AG.FC8304).

There are two reasons that people religiously follow F1 races and their favourite races: fast cars, and powerful emotions of freedom and exhilaration. The essences of both have been flawlessly distilled by TAG Heuer in these new additions to their Formula 1 collection. Owning one of these bold timepieces goes beyond having an attractively functional tool. To own one of them is to have a piece of racing history, and the unbridled freedom and speed of the F1 driver strapped to your wrist.
