Salzburg Walking Tour with Traditional Food and Drink

Salzburg is a beautiful destination that is well known for its delicious food and drink. Whether you are based in the heart of the city for your holiday, or on a day trip from one of the surrounding ski areas and resorts such as CLC World’s Alpine Centre Austria, you’ll no doubt be keen to sample as much of the traditional cuisine as possible. Fortunately, there are many options for a Salzburg walking tour which can help you and your taste buds get the most out of your stay. Whether you choose to take a guided walking tour through the city or go it alone on a gastronomic adventure, our short guide will help you decide how to experience the best eateries and hidden gems to be discovered in the city of Mozart.

Salzburg food markets

At the city’s food markets, you will find all kind of culinary delights: from locally grown produce to freshly baked bread,  pastries and spectacular sausages! The largest and most popular is the Grünmarkt, which takes place every Monday to Saturday in Universitätsplatz. Not only is the market a perfect showcase for traditional Austrian food and drink, but it is also a great place to learn about the fascinating history of Salzburg as well as pick up some tasty supplies for a lunchtime picnic on the banks of the Salzach River. On Friday mornings, Kajetanerplatz hosts Salzburg’s original organic farmers’ markets and this pedestrian-friendly area is a great place to sample some locally made cheeses, meats, and pastries.

Do it yourself Salzburg walking tour:

If you’re keen to taste the flavours of Salzburg at your own pace, here are a few addresses you’ll want to note:

  • Rigler’s (Getreidegasse/Kranzlmarkt 5): You may not know it, but Salzburg was once an important centre for the production of salt (and salzis the German word for salt!). One of the best places to discover the incredible possibilities with this simple pantry ingredient is Rigler’s. Along with herbs, spices, oils and vinegars, you’ll discover gourmet and flavoured salts from all over the world – there’s no end of possibilities here!
  • Vinothek De Gustibus (Bergstraße 14): This excellent wine shop near the Mozarteum University is the perfect place to learn more about Austria’s great wine-making tradition and grape varieties such as Grüner Veltliner for white wines and Zweigelt for red wines, in an authentic, atmospheric setting.
  • Café Mozart (Getreidegasse 22):You can’t leave Salzburg without trying the city’s most famous dish, the Salzburger Nockerl, a sweet soufflé. This café, named after its most famous son, is the place to try it.

Organised tours, gourmet experiences, cooking schools

If you’d prefer a guided experience, you may want to book yourself onto a private food and drink Salzburg walking tour. Whilst a little more costly than the self-guided option, these tours are led by experienced and local experts who are extremely knowledgeable and can directly introduce you to the best addresses for Salzburg local cuisine and the rich history which surrounds it. A typical walking tour is likely to last around three hours.

If you want to experience the Salzburg fine dining scene, then a gourmet food tour is a great way to approach your adventure. These tours make stops around some of the finest restaurants in the city (one stop for each course), even offering you the opportunity to greet esteemed chefs and, of course, sample some of Salzburg’s finest food and wine.

You could also participate in a cooking class to learn how to make savoury dishes such as pretzels and dumplings and classic sweet treats such as apple strudel and Salzburger Nockerl. This is a great way to learn how to recreate favourite flavours from your Austrian holiday in your own home.

Salzburg from CLC World

Salzburg is just over an hour from CLC Alpine Centre and resort staff can organise transfers to and from the main train station, as well as tour and cookery school bookings. They are also available to provide excellent advice on what their favourite stores to visit are, to ensure you get tasting the best food in the city on your Salzburg walking tour!

Is the All-White Kitchen Trend Finally Over??

In kitchen design’s recent history, the Magnolia Home-ification of the dominant kitchen trend has led to a swath of all white behemoths. Are they pretty? Sure. Will you still probably like them in 20 years? Highly likely. Am I SO sick of looking at all white kitchens? Abso-freakin-lutely.

I think that’s one of the reasons I’m just obsessed with the new kitchen trend I’ve caught percolating up through design magazines and on Pinterest – the return of warm wood cabinetry to a modern kitchen.

Is the All White Kitchen Trend Finally Over on apartment 34

Now to be clear – this is not the dark wood cabinetry of the 80’s. There’s not a shaker or builder grade cabinet to be found here. Rather, this new kitchen trend showcases beautifully warm, rich solid walnut cabinets. The look is flat front with minimalist hardware, but amazing craftsmanship. Think highly skilled joinery and refined detail. These are not rustic nor traditional. The look offers a truly modern, yet timeless style.

Is the All White Kitchen Trend Finally Over on apartment 34

To keep the look from being too overbearing and heavy you’ll notice there are few if no uppers used in these designs. That is what further modernizes these kitchens. In each of the looks, the gorgeous walnut anchors the room, while things are kept light and air up above. Perhaps you have a shelf for a bit of display or storage space. Or maybe there’s nothing at all, accentuating a minimal more Scandinavian style.

Some designs have stone or stainless steel counters and others continue with wood. Some designs feature a backsplash, some showcase a clean, naked wall.

Here’s an example of how you can in fact pair color with warm walnut cabinetry (gasp!).

While this look is more popular in a European context, I’m strongly advocating for American designers to adopt this style. It’s fresh, it’s warm and reminds that the kitchen is not a sterile showroom but instead the working heart of the home.

i’m not quite ready to gut my kitchen and start over to get this look…but I’m certainly tempted. Are you? Are you feeling this look??
