John Richardson: A Scholar Collects Auctions

Sir John Richardson, the “renowned Picasso scholar, curator and bon vivant” was an inveterate collector as seen by the rooms in his lower Fifth Avenue loft and Connecticut house. He also had exquisite taste and now some of his fabulous finds can be yours when they come up for auction at Stair Galleries and Sotheby’s this fall.

“So diverse are the things that have come my way that I had to make a virtue of necessity and mix them all together.”

– Sir John Richardson

The Stair auction which will take place September 16-17, 2020 will be “offering for sale Richardson’s collection of art and objects, including  works by Picasso and Warhol, Old Master prints, Neo-classical busts, photographs, porcelain, furniture and colorful textiles acquired over a lifetime of travel around the world.”

“Sotheby’s is pleased to announce John Richardson: A Scholar Collects, a unique collection of more than 50 paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and prints spanning contemporary art, Old Masters, modern art, and more from the renowned art historian and award-winning biographer of Pablo Picasso. Among the many remarkable works in Richardson’s collection are pieces he received personally from many of the leading luminaries of 20th century art, such as Picasso, Lucian Freud, Andy Warhol, and Georges Braque. The collection is comprised of works from Richardson’s Fifth Avenue loft, noted for its aristocratically bohemian interiors that mixed antiquities with modern and contemporary art for a uniquely eclectic style, and was recently chronicled in John Richardson: At Home with photography by François Halard.” Auctions will take place in New York and London from September to December 2020.

I usually can’t afford anything in the well known collector auctions but I’m going to see if I can find something from Sir John Richardson’s beautiful collections so maybe a little of his legacy rubs off.

You get to self-scrub, rinse, apply clay mud to your body, and then enter a private steam room. Afterwards, you rinse, hydrate and get comfortable in one of their zero gravity vibrating loungers with a meditative headset for deep restorative rest.

I especially love the facials and massages offered at The Spa at Auberge Beach. Everything can be customized to fit the immediate need’s of your skin!

If you want to fully get in the relaxation mindset before or after one of your treatments, there’s a private meditation room guests can take advantage of as well.

I felt very safe during all of my treatments due to their diligent care. Have your mask on when you walk into the The Spa at Auberge Beach and they’ll ask you if you want a glass of Prosecco or water as soon as you arrive. Then you’re escorted to a locker room to change into your robe and they make sure you aren’t touching everything around you. You are asked to wash your hands before your services begin.

If you’re getting a massage, you put your mask in a tray next to the sink, and are face down on the table. When it’s time to turn over, they bring over the tray and you put on your mask for the rest of the treatment. You have the choice if you want your therapist to wear gloves or not. For facials, therapists wear both a mask and a face shield.

Revered for his philanthropic nature and history, Sacha Jafri is deemed the world’s most celebrated living artist, for raising over USD$60m from the sale of his art for charity over the last 18 years. The World’s Most Celebrated Living Artist, Sacha Jafri Crafts a ‘Journey of Humanity’

Inviting them to contribute to his cause through sharing their own creative artworks on the themes of connection and isolation, the project which aims to represent each individual’s swirling emotions in light of unprecedented times, and become a guiding light for a better tomorrow, is set to eventually enter the Guinness World Record Books for the ‘Largest Art Canvas’ in the world.

In an effort to give back to those in need, the canvas upon completion will be broken down into 60 individually framed, numbered, signed and catalogued Artwork pieces, scheduled for charitable auction. Sacha Jafri has expressed hope for the ‘Journey of Humanity’ to amass up to USD$30 million, which will be distributed back to the various communities through global educational and health funding.

Specifically, Sacha Jafri aims to target vulnerable communities facing disproportional disadvantage due to circumstances which have existed long before the global pandemic. As a result, the artist intends to direct a majority of the funds obtained toward the scaling up of digital connectivity to ensure equitable access to remote learning for all children and youth in the world. He has also expressed a desire to initiate up to 5000 Life-saving Education and Medical Hubs, for children to access vital education, their necessary three meals-a-day, clean water, medical attention, alongside advice and aid for issues of health and sanitation, life-saving inoculations and vaccinations.

As of now, Sacha Jafri is collecting online contributions, and providing live updates for the ‘Journey of Humanity’ project, through the official Humanity Inspired website.

Remembering Chadwick Boseman expresses an uncommon heroism few are accustomed

It was shocking that Chadwick Boseman died on Friday 28 August 2020, age 43. For most of us, our introduction to the man took place in 2016 when he debuted as King T’Challa in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. This means that when the world watched him astride the transnational, multicultural phenom that was the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Black Panther, Infinity War and Endgame, this jacked up, rippling super hero wasn’t just battling our fictional villains, Boseman was battling a deadly enemy of his own – cancer. And no one was the wiser.

Fatigue is by far the most common – and for many the most distressing – symptom affecting people with cancer. In fact, there are numerous factors associated with fatigue (i.e., anemia, cancer treatments, the cancer itself, depression, to name a few), and here was a man getting in shape for multiple appearances as super hero T’challa, the Black Panther in Avengers: Civil War, shedding that bulk for Marshall in 2017, back into shape again for Black Panther and the Avengers 2 part sequel: Infinity War & Endgame, and then getting film ready again for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods; what is as shocking as his passing is that a mortal man battling colon cancer can accomplish so much physically and mentally than many of us on our best day.

Chadwick Boseman expresses an uncommon heroism few are accustomed: Rising above existential limitations

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow transplants and biologic therapies are known to sap energy. Anti-cancer drugs not only attack malignant cells, but strike at fast-growing healthy cells, including red blood cells, inducing anemia and its subsequent fatigue and put pump out a fitness regime fit to produce the physique of a super-hero was tremendous to say the least.

In a 2017 interview with Huffington Post reporter Matt Jacobs, the late actor subtly referenced what we know now was Boseman’s private battle with colon cancer. Jacobs asked, “You came off of one Black Panther project, did Marshall and then made another Black Panther movie. Did you bulk up, slim down and then bulk up again?” Chadwick responded exhaustedly, “Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.”

Chadwick Boseman with wife Taylor Simone

“You’ve been through the wringer,” to which Chadwick replied, “You have no idea. One day I’ll live to tell the story.” – Chadwick, during a 2017 interview with Huffington Post

Initially, Chadwick was working out 3-5 times per week leading up to his role in the Black Panther but in the lead up to The Avenger’s mega-sequel, the studio’s decision to shoot the final movies back-to-back meant Boseman spent nearly a year in constant training. Under the guidance of personal trainer, Addison Henderson, T’challa’s first appearance in Captain America: Civil War was the first time that the newly ascended King was assuming the powers of the Black Panther, so the pair went to the comic books for inspiration on the right physicality – a mere mortal (albeit one “herbally improved” as opposed to demigod like Thor or a radio-chemical super soldier like Steve Rogers) who had to carry the mantle for the Kingdom of Wakanda.

Let’s just say that Chadwick is a true athlete and I was impressed by what he brought to the table. The fact is, there is still more to his ability than what you have seen in this movie. He can do more. – Martial Arts expert Marrese Crump on Boseman’s physical prowess

Beyond the physical aesthetic, Henderson and Chadwick also worked hard to make sure that Boseman had the conditioning to survive marathon moviemaking and the intense battle scenes in Infinity War. “We trained like we were going into the fight of our lives,” said Henderson. Whatever Boseman was dealing with in his private life, no one in Hollywood was privy to it, none of his trainers, Marrese Crump for combat and Addison Henderson for fitness, were ever the wiser, a real testament of Boseman’s superheroism. We have become a society of complainers and men like Boseman are few and far between.

Boseman, ripped and every inch a super hero

According to Kerry Courneya, PhD, professor and Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Cancer at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, “Several recent studies suggest that higher levels of physical activity are associated with a reduced risk of the cancer coming back, and a longer survival after a cancer diagnosis.”

“Resistance training (Iifting weights or isometric exercise), which builds muscle. Many people lose muscle, but gain fat, through cancer treatment,” says Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, director of nutrition and physical activity for the American Cancer Society. Indeed, Welsh actor Andrew Whitfield best known for his leading role in the Starz television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand also dealt privately for non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Diagnosed in March 2010, by then the first season of Spartacus had already wrapped but his diagnosis delayed season two of Spartacus: Vengeance, this means that like Boseman, Whitfield likely endured physical training with the as-yet-undiagnosed cancer.

“I was exhausted after the first season and there was a lot of pain and it wasn’t going away.” – Andy Whitfield, Spartacus

After shooting the first season of Spartacus, excruciating pain that Whitfield could no longer ignore forced him to seek a medical opinion. doctors told him that he had lymphoma and that if left untreated he would be dead within six months. Demonstrating his resolve, Whitfield tattooed “Be Here Now” on his arm, and submitted to treatments that included 11 rounds of chemotherapy. A relapsed forced the rising star to abandon his lead role as he pursued alternative treatments in India where he soon passed, 18 months after the initial diagnosis (Whitfield’s journey was chronicled in a Netflix documentary).

Muscles Fight Cancer

According to Dr. Colin Champ,  Associate Professor at Duke University, “muscles fight cancer.” Scientists discovered that muscular strength decreased the risk of cancer death.  Dr Champs explains that fat tissue secretes the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α (which stands for tumor necrosis factor since our immune cells secrete it in the presence of tumor cells), our muscles secrete IL-6, which fights inflammation. AMPK is, in essence, the antithesis of cancer. While cancer cells are burning large amounts of glucose and nutrients, this is mostly to build up biomass – or simply put to keep growing and spreading. AMPK, on the other hand, shuts off this process, blocking cancer growth so we can feed our own cells.

“The risks of high intensity exercise for cancer survivors are not too different from the general population,” says Courneya. Musculoskeletal injuries–soreness, strains and sprains-are the most common. That said, exercise for cancer patients may carry a slightly higher risk for heart problems. It is always a good idea to have a complete physical exam and get approval from your oncologists before starting a moderate-to-vigorous exercise program, Courneya adds.

Chadwick Boseman: Gone too soon

If it’s hard to fathom his unexpected passing at 43, it’s equally unexpected given his stature today, that Boseman didn’t land a significant movie role until he was in his mid-30s. An undiscovered prodigy, the graduate of Howard University and the British American Drama Academy, and a former beneficiary of Denzel Washington himself (the veteran actor paid for young Boseman’s school fees), Boseman appeared in bits parts on television until he was cast as African-American baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

“You hear people say this all the time … but he was the only choice,” – Marvel producer Kevin Feige on the casting of Boseman as the lead in Black Panther

Boseman’s gravitas and range playing Robinson would lead him to more roles playing other prominent African Americans like James Brown in 2014’s Get On Up and Thurgood Marshall in 2017’s Marshall but of course, it was his turn as King T’challa in Black Panther that would bring him international acclaim. Marvel producer Kevin Feige said of Boseman’s casting, “You hear people say this all the time … but he was the only choice.” Indeed, having played one of the 20th century’s most famous negro athletes and one of its greatest singers in the span of less than 5 years, Boseman was bound to be a shoo-in for playing the milestone first African superhero in American comics. “Boseman didn’t have to do anything to get the role. No auditions, no nothing. He just had to be himself,” added Feige.

There’s no question of Chadwick Boseman’s legacy and while he leaves a body of extra-ordinary work in a career of stellar performances less than a decade long, his most important gift is the lesson he leaves behind in super-hero work ethics: It doesn’t matter the hands you are dealt, it only matters how you play the hand.

Yogyakarta-Based Artist, Lugas Syllabus Paints Life in Captivating Stories

Lugas Syllabus, ‘The Garden of Triumph’, 2015.

As a contemporary artist, living and working in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Lugas Syllabus is highly revered for his paintings and sculptures that address the ironies and contradictions in modern and contemporary society. Drawing inspiration from a variety of mediums, Syllabus’ work often incorporate elements of pop culture, media and technology; coupled with memories and folklore. Armed with an undergraduate degree in painting from the Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) of Yogyakarta, Lugas Syllabus has participated in a multitude of artist-in-residency programmes in Passau, Germany; Brisbane, Australia and Singapore, with a selection of work showcased globally.

Legenda Pendekar dari Bukit Asia. 200cm x 150cm . Acrylic on Linen. 2014. Collection of Mr. Kevin.

You grew up in Bengkulu, Indonesia, and are now established in Yogyakarta, the art capital. Tell us about your first steps as an artist?

I’ve loved art since I was a kid, and decided to be an artist since senior year in high school after a visit to Yogyakarta with my family. It was my father and my uncle Idran Yusuf, who were also artists, that showed me ISI (Indonesia Institute of Art at Yogyakarta). Since then, I pushed myself to make many sketches and paintings everyday, neglecting other subjects, in order to achieve 10 best result test to join ISI.

You seem to take inspirations from very diverse sources – pop music, television series, movie posters, even videogames – how would you describe your style?

I love storytelling, describing through painting and explaining with poetry, using my own daily life as a subject.

‘Work Eat Work’ Reconsumerism auto machine. Mural on Lugas Syllabus Solo Show ‘Natural Born Worker’ Finale Art File Philipine. 2016. Image courtesy of Artist and Finale Art File, Manila.

Your art is vibrant with vivid colours and a palette of images sampled from domains as diverse as nature documentaries, art history and religious icons. Tell us more about the “psychedelic imagery” you are using  and the “hidden” messages you seem to be trying to push across?

I like to push my art not only into galleries, fairs, auctions and collector walls. Im happy if it appears in the public space and is given more attention and contribution. I began using hidden messages after I showcased Davinci Codex in Milan during my residency in Europe 2012 and also Goya’s Paper in Madrid. I can’t tell the hidden message now but I’m working on my own paper now about the sign and I’d like to keep it a mystery.

Golden Limousine in the heaven of Art, 200cm x 300cm, Acrylic on Linen, (2016)

A lot of your work deals with a sociological observation of societal power structures. Your work also contains political themes (your large-scale artwork “Golden Limousine in the Heaven of Art” or “Golden Prayer” for instance). Do you see yourself as an “engaged” artist?

You are right. I feel an artist should engage in political themes but should not be controlled by it. We call him the knight of social betterment. He always considers himself a hero that is the man who has given over the meaning of life to his God, who lives focusing on the delight of his surrounding families and just society, the one who expands, the one who rallies to make mankind towards a more beautiful and Nobel world. And I try to work on it with my own beliefs, I want to be more meaningful also for my God. I believe if society is organized cooperatively, or cohesively so that socioeconomic resources can benefit all, there would no longer be corrupted governments as dirty politics would vanish and there would be no more racism. Like in the Golden Limousin: I dream of myself driving equally with my heroes like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raden Saleh, Picasso, Chang Ta Chien, Warhol, Affandi and a lot more. Therefore, no more racism, no need for power. No need for citizen’s obligation. No need for just society and no need for legitimate politics.

Royal Wedding Series ‘Blessing Family on the Golden Tree’.
Dr. Oei Hong Djien on The Royal Wedding stage.
Set of Painting , Bridal Stage, Photobooth, and Interactive Photo Contest via Media Social. 2019.

Your main output medium for your ideas is through painting and sculpture. How do you decide which medium to use over others for your ideas?

The concept or story controls the medium. I also like to work across mediums, for example, my work known as the ‘royal wedding series’ where I made a bridal stage and photo both contest. In this art, the audience and space are very important.

Nature inside Nature. 200 cm x 300 cm. Acrylic, Gold Leaf On Linen. 2018. Collection of TOTO Indonesia.

What is the most challenging part about creating your artwork?

To make it similar to my imagination…, the are limits to material but my fantasies are really wild…

You have collectors around the world. You are referenced amongst the leading global art websites. What does such recognition inspire in you?

As Warhol said if Art is a business make a good business, Art Business is more about trust and joy of process. I make many mistakes but I keep learning and I want to keep doing my progress as I enjoy it and I don’t want to stop.

Title: The Relationship between hope and blood. Medium: Teakwood, Fiberglass, Silicone Rubber, Dand Colouring Car Paint. Year: 2014 – 2017. Size: 160cm x 130cm x 260cm + Variable Dimension Small Stone Sculpture.

How do you view the current art scene in Indonesia? How important is the space given to artists in modern Indonesian society?

The Indonesian Art Scene has made good improvement but it needs more support from the Government and Art Collector. In Indonesian modern society, artists have more wide space, as they work across many disciplines. But we also need to give more support for artists and Art Promoters (curator, gallery, dealer etc) who try to push their careers to international platforms, and promote Indonesian Art globally.

Exhibited: The Prophet ‘Solo Exhibition Of Lugas Syllabus. Curated by Hendro Wiyanto. Sangkring Art Project.

The five words that best describe your art?

Theatrical, Landscape, Poetry of Hope.

Forbidden tree and the Golden Age. Acrylic, Gold Leaf on Linen. 200cm x 300cm. 2017.
Exhibited at ‘Lugas Syllabus Solo show’ tomorrow must be better. Art021 Shanghai, Element art Space. 2017. Collection of Micky Tiroche.

In which city can we expect to see your next solo exhibition?

I am working on some plans for a solo show with galleries overseas. But perhaps China may be the closest. Since my successful sold out solo show at Art021 Shanghai and Museum show at Nanjing, I keep in contact with China Collectors, Curators and Art Friends, and am happy to still sell some work to them even during Covid.

Where can we see some of you work online, are these for sale?

You may find my work on the Ocula webpage, through selected auctions at Christie’s, online galleries such as Chan+hori and on my personal page. There is Artwork for sale, some is collected, while some is only for visual documentation.

Lugas Syllabus, Pinky Rainbow in the Beautiful Day, 2019. Acrylic on canvas. 200 x 150 cm. Image courtesy of the artist and Chan+Hori.

You are a very sociable person, far from the cliché of an introvert artist. Who are your best artist friends on the Indonesian art scene?

I have some art friends that often get together in my studio. My studio has an ‘Joglo’ cottage where we drink coffee and discuss art. If I tell one name the another will envy, yet they are all good friends, inspiring each other but also friendly rivals. We like to debate art..Sometimes I put little salt words on the debate…and it becomes never-ending, continuing up till late at night. I find that they are all smart but not as genius as me…so i leave them to go to sleep. Sometimes they stay until really late and in the morning..yesss I work from the morning, I heard a story about them from my studio assistant, while while they were all still sleeping. I really enjoy listening to stories while I’m painting and drinking coffee, especially when I feel like I’m the winner of night’s debate.

If you were to name one mentor who has inspired you in your life and path as an artist, who would that be?

It would be my father who taught me how to sketch and write. But I also like Goya as he can put his hidden message on his ordering work and he can show his feeling in many situations. In Indonesia I like S Sudjojono as he can show the true color of Indonesian Art from his era. But I want to be more…I want to talk about history, now and in the future, that’s why I put no border on my art.
