“Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express” Pulls Into Singapore’s Station

Following the 2014 exhibition in Paris that detailed the history of the Orient Express, the Pop-Up Attraction “Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express” will be in Singapore at Gardens by the Bay this December 2020. Selected by the Orient Express as the first destination outside of France to kick-start a series of exhibitions that unveil a fairy-tale universe related to travel, culture and gastronomy, the showcase is regarded a historical and educational presentation for all ages, spearheaded by the Arab World Institute (IMA).

“Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express” Pulls Into Singapore’s Station

Established in 1883 by Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, the Orient Express was a luxury train service and a myth for over 135 years. Lionised as a symbol of luxury travel and timeless refinement, the true Orient Express materialised in January 2015, in an effort to develop the eponymous brand and deploy it in the world of luxury and lifestyle, while respecting the history and values embodied by its legendary train.

Featuring an array of extraordinary objects and centuries old documents, “Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express” offers guests the opportunity to time-travel, retracing the train’s legacy and discovering the events which have since not only transformed the world but shaped the map. Through reconstructing the tracks and landscapes of previous generations, “Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express” promises a fully sensorial experience, once enjoyed only by few esteemed explorers and diplomates.

Adorned by artworks classified as Historical Monuments, the train which weighs over hundreds of tonnes, houses an estimated 300 precious items and documents, with furniture adapted and restored to their authentic former glory. Of its innumerable valuables, the train is expected to possess a locomotive built in France 158 years ago and a 1930s sleeper car, weighing close to 200 tonnes.

Set to open for public viewing at the West Lawn of Gardens by the Bay, this December 2020 up till June 2021. Visitors are invited to relive the emotions of travellers who have boarded the Orient Express through a reconstituted train platform, and showrooms where they can embark on fascinating journey displayed in evocative giant trunks that encapsulates the history of the Orient Express.

Sterling Promise Inc., Presents The World’s Rarest Flower Diamond

Flower Diamond - Sterling Promise Inc.

Dubbed the “Flower Diamond”, Sterling Promise Inc., presents one of the world’s rarest creations on earth. Showcasing a perfectly symmetrical, six-petaled flower inclusion, this naturally-formed diamond was first discovered by Gemologist, John Humbert, while in Brazil on a gem buying expedition. Originating from the jungles of Minas Gerais, this rough diamond of 6.23 carats was carefully cut into a pear-shaped ornament, and modified into a brilliant 3.02 carat stone.

Sterling Promise Inc., Presents The World’s Rarest Flower Diamond

Flower Diamond - Sterling Promise Inc.

With a core flower inclusion, this rare find is now center-set in a pendant hung on a platinum necklace containing an additional 32 additional carats of diamonds, though there are a myriad of other ways for this quality jewel to be presented. Despite being graded by the Gemology Institute of America (GIA) as a fancy brown-greenish diamond, Humbert describes it as more greenish to the eye, explaining that “the clarity of any gemstone depends on the number and type of inclusions the stone features.” These inclusions are small imperfections created due to the extreme pressure and heat each diamond undergoes when formed.

Flower Diamond - Sterling Promise Inc.

While most are more valuable when re-cut to eliminate inclusions, the Flower Diamond’s unique hydrogen cloud of microscopic gas bubbles, is what makes this jewel one of the rarest creations ever seen, thus significantly boosting its prestige.

Flower Diamond - Sterling Promise Inc.

Backed by over 27 years of experience in cutting and reviewing jewelry, John Humbert’s team of experts come from a range of different backgrounds and services provided by Sterling Promise Inc. The New York-based company thus offers innumerable custom design, handmade settings, updating appraisals, and laser repair services, alongside a vast selection of jewelry for all occasions.

Flower Diamond - Sterling Promise Inc.

Truly a one-of-a-kind treasure, the Flower Diamond has received considerable attention from potential buyers, due to the unlikelihood that such a precious stone will ever be seen again. The company is now accepting inquiries and considering various purchase offers for this exemplary beauty.

The Most Amazing Things To Do on the Cote d’Azur

Cote d’Azur, otherwise known as The French Riviera, is where the rich and famous go to see and be seen. This stunning Mediterranean coastline encompasses some of the most glamorous vacation spots known to man. Does Saint-Tropez or Monaco ring a bell? Since the 19th century, these cities have inspired artists likes Picasso, A-list film stars, socialites, and aristocrats from around the globe.

For travelers who enjoy the finer things in life, there is no better place in the world to visit than the Cote d’Azur. Most people are familiar with gorgeous coastal cities like Cannes and Nice, but let’s explore what else there is to see and do in this part of the world…

Wine tasting in Cassis

It is no secret that some of the best wine in the world comes from France. If you love white wine and rosé, then visiting Cassis in the Cote d’Azur should be on your list. Cassis is a charming fishing port offering pebbly beaches, limestone cliffs with stunning views, historic château’s and hillside vineyards. Their crisp white wines pair perfectly with the local seafood. I’d recommend spending a day visiting the various vineyards in town – there’s no better way to learn about Cassis! For wineries, I would suggest Domaine du Bagnol, Clos Sainte Magdeleine, Ferme Blanche and Domaine Paternel who specialize in organic wine.

Mucem in Marseille

Located only less than an hour’s drive from Cassis is the the largest city on the Mediterranean coast: Marseille. A fairly new addition to the city that is a must-visit is Mucem, also known as the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean. This national museum opened in 2013, and won the Council of Europe Museum Prize just two years later. Mucem is a genuine jewel of the Old Port, and also the first museum solely dedicated to Mediterranean cultures. The design is very modern and the city and water views from the rooftop are picture perfect! Both history buffs and modern architecture lovers will absolutely fall in love with Mucem.

Les Baux-de-Provence

One of the most charming villages in all of France is Les Baux-de-Provence, located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region. It is wonderfully positioned in the Alpilles mountains with a ruined castle overlooking the gorgeous plains to the south. Strolling through Les Baux-de-Provence, you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. You can enjoy nature walks along the mountain range, explore medieval Château des Baux, or even visit a former quarry with multimedia art shows at Carrières de Lumières.

Lérins Islands

The Lérins Islands are comprised of four Mediterranean islands located off the French Riviera in Cannes. The two largest islands worth visiting are Île Sainte-Marguerite and the Île Saint-Honorat. There’s a historic monastery on Île Saint-Honorat which is still home to 30 Cistercian monks and is a popular attraction for tourists. Both islands also offer beautiful woodland surroundings for peaceful nature walks. There are ferry services offered year round from Cannes to access the Lérins Islands, which feel like such a hidden gem in the French Riviera – definitely worth the journey!

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

If you are curious to see the inside of a mega-mansion in the French Riviera, I highly recommend a visit to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. This seaside villa was built in the early 1900s and overlooks both the Bay of Villefranche and Beaulieucan in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. This elegant home with over half a dozen gardens once belonged to the Rothschild banking family. However, it was generously donated in 1934 to the Académie des Beaux Arts and can now be toured by the public! Give yourself several hours to tour the grounds which boast ornate fountains, bridges, rose gardens and more. Inside the mansion, you can admire the state apartments, and an impressive collection of antique furniture, art, and rare porcelain.

Clearly, the Cote d’Azur has so much to offer for those who wanting to experience the history, culture, and gastronomy of the French Riviera. It is the perfect place to vacation in the warmer months, and I would especially recommend a trip to Cote d’Azur for a honeymoon or any sort of couple’s getaway. There is a romantic atmosphere here that can be enjoyed while strolling along the seaside, or tasting the best food and wine that money has to offer!

Exploration and Elegance: The Lifestyles of Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape

Blancpain, a founding partner of the Gombessa expeditions, has been backing the ambitious projects of diver, biologist and underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta for eight years. The objective of the Gombessa V Expedition was to study, photograph, and present to the public little known areas in the Mediterranean Sea.

Each mission Ballesta leads at these biodiversity hotspots, is characterised by a scientific mystery, a diving challenge between 60 and 120m, and the promise of extraordinary images thanks to exploration without time constraints; a world-first method developed by the Gombessa.

Exploration and Elegance: The Lifestyles of Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape

Requiring two years of preparation, Gombessa V was conducted off the French Mediterranean. It was during the expedition that Laurent Ballesta and three companions achieved a world first: associating saturation diving with scuba using closed circuit rebreathers. Supported on ground by a team of 30 professionals, the four men spent 28 days submerged in a 5m2 bathyal station, leaving it each day to explore the underwater environment at depths of 60 to 145 metres.

This innovative approach is made possible thanks to a unique marriage of two previously separate techniques: saturation diving, deep recreational diving, and of course, the irrepressible talents of pioneering diver’s watch manufacturer – Blancpain. Renowned for introducing the world to the world’s first professional diving instrument, the Fifty Fathoms and its subsequent Bathyscaphe models also became a popular civilian timepiece regardless whether they went diving or not. The new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe comes in a blue dial and bezel with a Sedna gold case variant.

Sedna gold Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe with Blue dial

The Blue of the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe symbolises Blancpain’s passion and commitment to the underwater world as much as the Le Brassus manufacture’s commitment to the Gombessa expeditions. A deep colour which exalts the depths (no pun intended) of passion reflected by  Ballesta’s passionate exploration of the worlds under the sea. The shimmering reflections of Sedna gold Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe’s sunburst finish dial reflects the plays of light that Ballesta himself frequently encounters during his underwater sojourns.

Crafted from Sedna gold – a gold, copper and palladium alloy guaranteeing the exceptional durability of the new red gold Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe’, the 43 mm case features a sharp outline and satin finish that gives the Bathyscaphe a sporty yet refined sophisticated.

Analogously, the partnership between the Institut National de la Plongée Professionnelle (INPP) and Laurent Ballesta’s Andromède Océanologie, supported by Blancpain and other institutions, recall the creation of the emblematic Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch in the early 1950s. The archetypal diving watch conceived before even the Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster because Blancpain played a visionary role in recognising the efforts of Captain Bob Maloubier of the French “Nageuers de combat” (think French Navy SEALS) in creating a diver’s watch able to handle to rigours of French special forces activities.

Commitment to the Oceans: Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition

Since then, Blancpain has played a leading role in the discovery of the splendours of the underwater world. The most recent initiative supported by Blancpain’s Ocean Commitment (BOC) program is devoted to the study of the great hammerhead shark in French Polynesia. As a continuation of this project, Blancpain dedicated a diver’s watch issued in a 50-piece special series – the Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition – to this majestic predator.

Initiatives like the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition are case in point for Blancpain’s full-throated embrace of its heritage with each model of the Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition available exclusively in Blancpain boutiques in New York and Las Vegas. A treasured fan acquiring one of these timepieces will be joining Blancpain in supporting the Mokarran Protection Society to the tune of US$1,000. A total of US$50,000 will be added to the brand’s regular contributions to promoting, respecting and protecting the fascinating world of the oceans; and if you are disappointed that this delectable green variant, in a few hours we will witness the official launch of an olive green Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback, this model will be available to the rest of the world.

The new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Chronograph Flyback comes in a 43.6 mm satin-brushed black ceramic case topped by a rotating bezel featuring a green ceramic insert. The Manufacture F385 calibre, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback, drives the high frequency chronograph enabling each second to be divided into 1/10th intervals.

What it means to wear a Blancpain diver’s watch

Efforts like these and Ballesta’s Gombessa expeditions are what allows us to have a better grasp of the world below. As a result of Blancpain’s generous commitment,  their joint efforts will enable 4 divers to undergo an unprecedented experience: spending 28 days in a 5m2 saturation complex and leaving it each day to explore the 100m zone where a total of 400 hours diving time are cumulated in the sea’s obscurity. Despite the extreme circumstances, this unprecedented technique enabled the divers to discover and photograph 21 new underwater species, thus revealing the Mediterranean’s well kept secrets.

At a time when we are faced with indisputable evidence of climate imbalance and species extinctions, a mission employing cutting-edge scientific research techniques to study the ecosystems, sends out a message of hope. Whether it’s the Gombessa Expeditions: an ecological mission, and the promise of exceptional photography or Blancpain Ocean Commitment, anyone looking for a deeper symbolic association of what it means to wear a bonafide diver’s watch will discover as Ballesta did, that Blancpain truly lives up to its raison d’etre.

The Versace Spring 2021 Collection Reflects Immense Diversity and Inclusion

Marking her first runway debut since the global lockdown, Donatella Versace like many others, is counting her blessings, undoubtedly overwhelmed by relief, excitement, and newfound hope. As the world continues to evolve in unimaginable ways, the designer herself, contemplates her purpose and direction.

The Versace Spring 2021 Collection Reflects Immense Diversity and Inclusion

Based on what she describes as personal ‘rebirth’, the Versace Spring 2021 menswear collection reflects her journey of re-emergence and prior submergence as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the imagined ruins of the Atlantis, a fictional island mentioned in an allegory on the hubris of nations in Plato’s works Timaeus and Critias, the Versace Spring 2021 runway showcased water currents streaming down projected walls, mythical citizens rising from the deep blue, and mends of starfish, coral, and seashell motifs from Gianni Versace’s ‘trésor de la mer’ collection, dating as far back as Spring 1992.

The show which intends to represent the remnants of an old world long gone, bids farewell to the lifestyles we once knew, ushering in new practices of social distancing and enhanced personal hygiene. Deemed equal parts camp and chic, with glittery starfish adornments across the collection’s pervasive Trésor de la Mer sea-life print, Donatella Versace injects the Maison’s DNA into our new normal.

Presenting an ideal metaphor for today’s increased need for equal and fair representation, the Versace Spring 2021 collection showcases the diverse wonders of a powerful co-ed cast, encompassing a variety of races, body-types, sexual orientations, and gender identities. The Versace Spring 2021 collection thus repositions the brand, as “an example of inclusion, of mutual support, and acceptance of what is different from us.”

Tanner Van De Veer Attempts To Revive The Harley-Davidson

Shrouded in dark figures, the iconic American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson have been on a rapid downward spiral since 2007. Selling a mere 218,273 units worldwide in 2019, the company reported a 4.3% drop in sales when compared the 228,051 units sold, the year before.

Tanner Van De Veer Attempts To Revive The Harley-Davidson

On a mission to bring Harley-Davidson to a whole new generation of riders, design studio, Tanner Van De Veer has published a University-grade thesis, identifying Harley-Davidson’s most pressing issues. Mapping-out the necessary changes and steps in full detail, Tanner Van De Veer highlights the company’s failure to attract younger buyers and passivity when scouting dealers.

Going further, the thesis unveils the renderings of a revival motorcycle. Positioned as an entry-level electric bike with a low starting price and light, accessible dimensions, the studio expresses a need for a small-to-mid-weight electric motorcycle targeted at balancing sport and relaxation. Such a bike, thus aims to redirect the Harley-Davidson product, from an exclusive social club to a diversified lifestyle essential.

Crafted based on the signature Harley-Davidson design language in an effort to maintain brand identity, Tanner Van De Veer suggests establishing a hot swap battery subscription platform to reduce capital for each individual purchase, and sustainable elements such as an electric powertrain – which is not only quiet and environmentally friendly, but provides a less intimidating learning experience, thanks to the consequential elimination of the bike’s clutch and excessive gears.

Drawing inspiration from some of Harley-Davidson’s earliest creations including, the boarder-tracker, the all-new revival motorcycle is expected to feature an abundance of transparencies, creating an illusion of mass whilst a combination of lights and brutal shapes modernize its form. Regarded equal part vintage and punk, the revival Harley-Davidson showcases a distinctive open-air tank, a paneled power unit, Carhatt duck canvas seating, and a stripped down UI system, which allows riders to disengage from technology and truly enjoy every moment of the great outdoors.

Helmut Lang Breathes New Life Into Anthony Vaccarello ’s Deserted Ideas

Launching today, at the Saint Laurent flagship in the former Colette space on Rue St. Honoré, the much anticipated yet highly unexpected collaboration with elusive former fashion designer Helmut Lang, depicts a new and invigorating vision for a post-pandemic fashion industry. This special collaboration, dubbed “Helmut Lang curated by Anthony Vaccarello”, is part of a larger Saint Laurent Rive Droite project, where Anthony gives his creations to an artist in exchange for a set of unique sculptures.

Helmut Lang Breathes New Life Into Anthony Vaccarello ’s Deserted Ideas

Handpicked by the Creative Director himself, Helmut Lang – whose body of work in fashion reflect a strict construction that can only be seen as an underground influence upon Anthony’s vision – has long grown into a deep source of inspiration and fascination, “For my generation, he is the ultimate designer of the ’90s. I consider him at the same level as someone like Coco Chanel for the way he brought realness into fashion, something that everyone is still copying. Helmut was the first to stand up against artificial promotional messages, his vision and art direction brought everyone back to the real and meaningful essence of fashion.” Regarded the ultimate embodiment of minimalism, modernity and restrained opulence, Helmut Lang’s inventions, unorthodox way of life and mysterious charm, has earned him a reputation for being the person to always make unfailing decisions.

Paying careful attention to modern issues like sustainability, durability, lasting power of the ever-shifting nature of fashion collections and cycles, Anthony Vaccarello’s collaboration with Helmut Lang presented the perfect opportunity to expand his perception of the designer. Straying away from Lang’s common associations with denim and workwear clothing, Anthony finds that Lang is in fact an ideal interlocutor for a project that is also a dialogue.

Questioning the very definition of luxury and the meaning of the clothes’ function, Helmut Lang has worked closely alongside artists such as, Louise Bourgeois and Jenny Holzer. Unable to help himself, Lang’s one-off collaborations quickly turned into a habit during the 21st century, making him the pioneer of artist-and-fashion-designer-led assignments. These close links put new interrogations at the forefront of the ever-evolving fashion industry: fashion a form of applied art, the time-frame of fashion creations, and its more or less perennial impact on global culture, which are probably the only few that are still at the heart of today’s discussions.

Unlike his other projects, the invitation to work with Saint Laurent seemed far too appealing to pass on, for a number of reasons. In an email interview with Business of Fashion, Helmut Lang, who is now a full-time artist since 2005, expressed his great honour and excitement, stating, “I always had the utmost respect for the work of Yves, and Anthony has created an unparalleled vision for YSL, furthering the house’s legacy in a truly contemporary way. Anthony was the first person in fashion to engage in a collaboration focusing on my artwork. As I collaborated with artists in different ways throughout my time in fashion, it was intriguing to be in the reversed position.”

With a unique ability to turn items, either raw or discarded, into pieces of art, the “Helmut Lang curated by Anthony Vaccarello” collaboration is based off a selection of clothing and accessory prototypes, alongside garments and jewels left unfinished and deserted. Shredded, mixed with a pigmented resin to then be moulded in aluminium, these former fashion objects have become primal totems with unique textures reminiscing both, a precious past and a promising future, thus allowing the remaining testimonies of Anthony Vaccarello’s creativity to be morphed into a new life. The finalised sculptures will be displayed at Rive Droite, first in Paris, then in Los Angeles, where the full collection will be available for sale.
