Weighing an estimated 350kg, the Totem Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Electric Coupe boasts 518bhp, with additional power-management efficiency settings and the capability to accelerate 0 to 100km/h in a matter of 3.4 seconds.

Designed and tested to offer top performance both on track and road, the coupe’s newest disk brake caliper B-M4, disks 328×28 and 345×28, come directly from Brembo and can be customized in a variety of colours and markings upon request.

Featuring internal heating on the front and rear windows, the Totem Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Electric Coupe includes modern air conditioning systems, an extended audio system by AUDIO DEVELOPMENT, and a fully digitalized dual-screen control board with a sophisticated antitheft system, Bluetooth connection, interactive maps, and DAB radio, alongside vehicle controls and stats.

ICOMIA’s State of the Industry Report on Covid-19: Asia Focus

ICOMIA logo 660 x 550Japan

The Japan International Boat Show scheduled for March was cancelled, along with five other local boat shows planned to take place in April and May. Imported boat dealers will hold the new boat sea trials for potential customers individually from April, according to the ICOMIA report.

Marinas are open without any restrictions; Manufacturers are experiencing supply delays. For manufacturers, some parts from China have been delayed and companies are looking for alternative suppliers. There is concern about the reduction of volume due to the global demand downturn.

Hong Kong

Due to the increasing number of cases, the Government has introduced stronger measures, limiting alcohol licenses at bars and restaurants, and ordering the closure of sports clubs with private recreational leases (PRL). Several yacht clubs have closed due to the new government policies on PRL but access to boats is still open. Several yacht clubs are closed, but access to boats is still open.

According to a recent survey conducted by Hong Kong Boating Industry Association, a total of 71 per cent of employees will be affected if the downturn persists. Cancellation of both international and local boating and sailing events has had a significant-to-moderate negative impact for 75 per cent of companies in the industry.

Singapore

Bars and entertainment venues are closed from March 26-April 30. Restaurants are not affected. Schools remain open but enrichment programmes and tuition centres are closed. All arrivals have to submit a health declaration form online prior to travel. Short-term visitors (including transiting passengers) are not allowed since March 24. The cruise centre is closed.

Marinas are still open for business. Cruising in local waters is possible, but foreign arrivals will be turned away. The Singapore Yacht Show, which was scheduled for March, has been moved to October 22-25, 2020.

UAE

Since March 26, the Emirati government has issued a mandatory lockdown, while it conducts a general sterilisation campaign with the aim of controlling the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country. A curfew begins as of 20:00 (local time) up to 6.00am. Public transportation is suspended during this period. Employees of certain sectors are exempt, including police, the army, medical staff, airports, and banks, among few others. Those who do not respect the curfew period will face fines. Commercial centres, malls, and open markets are closed now for two weeks, renewable. Restaurants are ordered to exclusively offer take-out services. In addition, all international flights are suspended for different period of times and depending on destinations.

Following Government and Ministerial guidelines and measures to ensure health and safety of its residents and visitors, maritime authorities notified all maritime activities companies, yacht charter and jetski rental companies to suspend the all maritime activities until further notice. In general, boating activity in UAE and Oman is suspended, but the marinas remain open for private boat owners, provided they stay on board and don’t go out. Some luxury resort marinas with hotels are offering services and responding to owners’ requests while onboard (deliveries, etc).

In Abu Dhabi, although private boating has not been forbidden by government decree, marinas are very quiet as most members respect the government’s instructions to stay at home. All commercial activities have been halted within the marinas as per the authority’s instructions. All commercial charter, pleasure and touring activity is banned. Fishing marinas are still active, since considered a vital activity.

In general, marina offices are open according to regularly hour, but manned only by administration staff, reduced to a minimum to guarantee safety and security. Marina operational staff remain 24/7, although shifts are reduced to minimum safe manning.

Each marina adds additional precautionary measures to reduce spread of the Covid-19 virus, such as:

  • introduction of increased cleaning protocols, especially for typical contact areas such as door handles, washroom, buggies, trolleys, office area and equipment, etc
  • screening all employee temperatures at point of entry
  • enhancement of internal health & safety training measures
  • preventive measures protocol distribution to suppliers and contractors
  • monitoring the situation on a daily basis and adapt accordingly

Port Takola Yacht Marina & Boatyard is set to expand its Pier G with 25 new berths, made up of a mixture of 15m and 18m berths as well as a 40m superyacht berth. Port Takola is undergoing an expansion, having had a soft opening in May 2018

Port Takola is undergoing an expansion, having had a soft opening in May 2018

“Since our soft opening in May 2018, we have gradually gained a reputation for serenity, services, year-round shelter, convenience for yacht checking in and out, and being close to Ao Nang, Krabi Town and Krabi International Airport,” said Matthew Na Nagara, Port Takola’s General Manager and Chairman of the Thai Yachting Business Association.

“Boat repair services and superyacht arrivals are other factors behind this expansion. Our boatyard now provides a comprehensive service, so more repair work can be done here. A chandlery is now available onsite, so this makes it more convenient to base a yacht here on long-term basis.

“We’re also receiving more interest from superyachts for short- term and seasonal visits. This is due to more awareness of our capability and the value we can provide in comparison to other nearby destinations.”

Pier G will feature a 3m-wide concrete pontoon and Thermowood grooved-surface fingers built by Marinetek. All pedestals will feature two power connections to accommodate air-conditioning, while superyacht pedestals will provide 125-amp three-phase electrical supply.

Port Takola is also offering 30 per cent discounts to yachts berthing for more than a week, as well as long-term berth ownership.

Revisiting Tonne Goodman at Home

Since no one can leave their homes, magazines have had to get creative. Wendy Goodman, the design editor of New York magazine, asked her sister Tonne Goodman to submit a few photos of her West Village duplex for The Cut. I’ve mixed her photos from the Vogue profile of it from September 2001.

Tonne found the duplex in a state that had been barely altered in more than 150 years, a rare find in renovation-crazy New York and worked with architect Michael Watson to create a family friendly yet aesthetically pleasing home. Anyone who’s seen Tonne can attest that her fashion style is “minimalist, classic, contemporary and unadorned” as is her decorating style. “I was always impressed with the Italian approach that mixed pure modernism with original classic elements in period buildings, and I thought this was the perfect space in which to achieve that.”

The Mariano Fortuny lamp and painting have remained in the apartment for year but occasionally get moved around.

“In one corner of the dining room, there is a Mariano Fortuny lamp, a framed drawing Tonne made of our brother Ed, and a portrait of Tonne by Bruce Weber that he did when they were on location in Paris many years ago. The line drawing of a battleship is by Tonne’s son Cole — and Evie did the abstract gradation. Tiger’s cat scratch can be seen in the foreground.” – Wendy Goodman

To coincide with her acceptance of the Eleanor Lambert Award at the 2010 CFDA Awards, Vogue’s Tonne Goodman talked to Paul Cavaco about her favorite fashion moments throughout her career in this video.

A view of the living room from Vogue in 2001.

“Her living-room coffee table is always groaning with books and usually features her favorite red tulips (a sign that she does allow some color to seep in here and there).” – Wendy Goodman

“The entrance hall has a working fireplace and above, a poster of a photograph by Bruce Weber for Calvin Klein Tonne styled when she worked as the vice president of advertising for the designer. The dictionary on the stand has been in our family for as long as I can remember.” – Wendy Goodman

The black and white photos on the mantlepiece include  Louise Dahl-Wolfe portraits of legendary Vogue editors Diana Vreeland and Carmet Snow. I love them mixed with the earthy elements of stones and antlers.

“The dining room is centered by a table that can expand with the addition of two leaves. Tonne bought it at a church fair. The windows have their original folding shutters. Tiger, Tonne’s cat, can be seen on patrol here.”

“Over the years, whenever Tonne has gone to Paris to cover the fashion collections, she has ferried back table settings from CafĆ© de Flore, where you can buy linens and glasses. She also carts back dishes from Astier de Villate and treasures from the Paris flea market. The knives seen here are from Perceval.”

I actually saw Tonne sitting alone at a table at Cafe de Flore during Paris fashion week years ago and of course I snuck a photo. There also used to be a separate store around the corner that sold the Cafe de Flore merchandise. It closed so you have to go into the cafe to buy the merchandise.

Ever since I saw this feature, I’ve wanted that wooden WaterRower Classic Rowing Machine that Tonne uses on the upstairs landing.

The giltwood framed mirror on the upstairs landing is original to the house.

This is a still from a packing with Tonne Goodman video.

On Newsstands: WOW Spring 2020

While the Spring issue of WOW Singapore (issue 56) managed to catch all the fair cancellations before going to print, this is not the end of the news cycle. While the issue does address our current global situation, we focus our efforts on curating just the right kind of content for the moment.

With all the hand-washing that is currently going on, we have actually lucked into just the most appropriate kind of story: watches with bracelets. In fact, we have a 20-page special on the subject forming the backbone of this issue. We certainly hope you are washing your hands frequently, and have a watch with a great bracelet to ease your mind while you are at it. Happily, our cover star, the Rado Captain Cook, also comes with a great bracelet option.

As our subscribers and dedicated following will know, the bracelet articles this issue build on the sports watch feature that we covered in the previous issue, which you can already read online via Luxuo.com.

Elsewhere in issue 56, we look at less topical concerns, but still build on our editorial leanings and lessons-learned from 2019. The unisex watch is one such editorial concern for the WOW team, as well as the unsung novelties of 2019 that still need some attention. The editor is certain that the key highlights of 2019 will play a strong role in 2020 too.

“We live in truly unprecedented times, and we’ll need to consider unprecedented moves. With that in mind, we’ll be covering all the watches that are currently in our market, even if these are not new for 2020; if we have already covered them, we’ll take another look, from a different angle. For collectors, now is the time to take your time to assess how you feel about what is in the market right now, and we’ll be following you on that journey,” said WOW Editor-in-Chief Ashok Soman.

8 Ways to Satisfy Your Wanderlust at Home

With the COVID-19 pandemic, these are such tricky and unprecedented times for us all. Most of us have been advised to stay at home and only leave or interact with others for essential needs. If you’re like me, you crave adventures and new people, places and things to stimulate your mind. The good news: fun has not been cancelled! There are still many ways to feel like you’re traveling the world and getting your creative juices flowing.

Below are 8 great ways to satisfy that wanderlust deep within you, from the comfort of your own home!

#1 Watch travel-themed movies & TV shows

There’s no better time to sign up for online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Here’s a well rounded list of my favorite travel inspiring movies and shows that are currently available to stream across the internet…

Netflix: P.S. I Love You, Julie & Julia, The Hundred Foot Journey, Roma, The Tourist, Ugly Delicious, Travels with my Father, Street Food, Instant Hotel and Chef Show

Hulu: Up in the Air, Under the Tuscan Sun, Where’d You Go Bernadette, Leap Year, Lost in Translation, Anthony Bourdain No Reservations, Man vs. Wild, House Hunters international and Travels in Europe with Rick Steves

Amazon Prime: Chef, Roman Holiday, Rat Race, Downton Abbey, Ken Burns: The National Parks – America’s Best Idea, Blue Planet

HBO Now/Go: Gulliver’s Travels, Notting Hill, Madagascar, Game of Thrones, Catherine The Great

Disney Plus: Ratatouille, Mulan, Aladdin (live action), Lost Cities with Albert Lin, Continent 7 Antartica

#2 Read a book about a faraway place

With more time on our hands, it’s important to keep our brains active with a great book. While travel might be at a standstill, books can transport you to another place… all from the comfort of your own home! Some favorites of mine include Into the Wild, Eat Pray Love, Wild, Notes From a Small Island (or anything by Bill Bryson!), The Art of Travel, and A Year of Living Danishly.

I suggest finding amazing recommendations through Goodreads. You can even create a goal of how many books you’d like to read in a year and keep track. If you own a library card, check if your local library offers free ebooks online, many do these days. For those who use Amazon, there’s Kindle Unlimited which is a subscription service that will grant you access to over a million titles and thousands of audiobooks. Speaking of audiobooks, if you prefer those, I’d recommend Audible.

#3 Visit museums or National Parks – virtually!

Many places around the globe are getting very creative with their tourism. From world famous museums (including the British Museum, Met, Vatican Museums, The Louvre and The Guggenheim), to stunning National Parks in the United States (including Kenai Fjords, Hawaii Volcanoes, Carlsbad Caverns, Bryce Canyon, and Dry Tortugas), you can virtually explore places that are on your bucket list. This would also be a fun activity for kids as well who are now being homeschooled.

#4 Learn a new language or unique skill

While English is universally accepted, I often wish I knew multiple languages when I’m traveling. For those who’ve always had an interest in learning a language, or perfecting your foreign language skills, now is the time to do so! If you’re looking for a convenient and free way to learn, I recommend downloading Duolingo onto your phone or tablet. If you have more time on your hands, a bigger budget, and a determination to master a language, I’d recommend downloading Pimsleur software onto your computer.

If you already know more than one language, I suggest learning a new skill! From photography lessons, to cake decorating and everything in between, there are many companies online who offer virtual classes. Two of my top recommendations are Skill Share and Brit + Co.

#5 Create a travel bucket list

Whenever I’m in a travel lull, it always helps to work on my bucket list for places I’d love to go in my lifetime! There are even some apps now that can help you organize your bucket lists, like Woovly, Soon, iWish, and more.

Here are some examples from my travel bucketlist: visit every continent, travel to all 50 states, see all 9 National Park in California, attend the Olympics or World Cup, and explore one of the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

#6 FaceTime with friends in another state or country

I just spoke with my friend in Germany and it was so refreshing to hear about how other parts of the world are handling this pandemic. You can even show each other your outside views to compare! Catching up with friends in general really helps the time pass when you can’t meet up in person.

Thanks to Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime, it’s easier now more than ever to connect with your loved ones around the world. I suggest getting creative and playing games with them virtually; Jackbox TV and Playing Cards are both great options. You can even watch movies together with Netflix Party, a browser extension app exclusive to Chrome.

#7 Do a travel-themed puzzle

Another fun way to keep your mind occupied are puzzles! They’re an enjoyable activity for anyone in your family, no matter what age. While puzzles are in high demand now and may be difficult to find through megastores like Target, Walmart, or Amazon, I’d suggest shopping locally. Check out the independent bookshops or toy shops in your area by either visiting their website or calling them directly. I know many places now are offering free delivery or curbside pickup.

#8 Cook a meal from a different culture

Everyone has to eat, and while we currently cannot go out to restaurants, we might as well have as much fun as we can in our own kitchens. Dreaming about a faraway place? Google famous dishes from those destinations and start cooking! A few of my favorite international recipes include Chicken Tikka Masala, Japanese Fried Rice, Hawaiian Loco Moco, Greek Salad and Italian Meatballs.

Prada Values Life and Work with it’s Latest Fall 2020 Menswear Collection

Fusing past and future aesthetics with sporty-formal attire, Miuccia Prada explores both extremes of the spectrum when dressing the modern man. Strutting the runway through a fascist-style piazza designed by AMO, part of Rem Koolhaas’ architecture firm, past cardboard-constructed statues of men on horses, as an ominous bass and fading trumpets echoed through the venue – Prada’s Fall 2020 show was almost heroic.

Prada Values Life and Work with it’s Latest Fall 2020 Menswear Collection

Mirroring the collection with a series of offbeat colours, the set flashed mauve, red and pea green as models clothed in bare-armed tank tops, three-piece suits or mismatched tailored separates and high notch-collared two button topcoats graced the stage.

“I thought to give an indication that the only thing that makes me calm and optimistic is to give value to work… to give value to things that matter in your life and your work. And so the creativity is mixed with technicalities, which is a little bit similar to the Secessionist period when ideas, creativity, and actual work had to be all together. I want to give a hope that in this casino [chaotic world] if you do well your job, paired with intelligence, and with culture, then this already is something… It’s to give respect to work, to effort, to fatigue, and to what is difficult.” – Miuccia Prada.

Contrary to the designer’s exegesis, each model showcased profession-specific attire, alluding to the aesthetic of rural workers, young executives, and freelancers with mid-calf boots, oversized corduroy jackets, piped sport raised graphics on pocket flaps, rubberized coats, baggy pants, a wicked green half-length coat and beaten leather galvanized sole boots, alongside an array of technical wear.

Transitioning seamlessly into fashion-forward top-to-toe cotton day pajamas with small ruffled bibs and treated shearlings, the collection came to an eventual close, featuring knit and silk patterned topcoats with lavender and olive-coloured gridded graphics.

Raha Moharrak TAG Heuer friend is leading Belmond Good Living Expeditions

Raha Moharrak is currently pursuing her MBA at Synergy University Dubai Campus with a specialisation in Women’s Leadership

Until 2018 women were not permitted in Saudi Arabian sport stadiums, not even as spectators. When the Saudi people sat down to watch the London Olympic Games in 2012, they only got to see two women athletes representing their country. Sarah Attar, an American born dual US-Saudi national, who participated in women’s track and Wojdan Shaherkani for judo.

The effective ban on Saudi women’s participation in national competitive sports had effectively hamstrung female athletes in Saudi Arabia; but it mattered little, when Attar finished last and even when Shaherkani was defeated under two minutes, they each received standing ovations. Despite the social and cultural obstacles, a young visual communicator named Raha Moharrak was training to conquer Mount Everest.

“Convincing them [my family] to let me climb was as great a challenge as the mountain itself!” – Raha Moharrak to CNN

The then 26 year old, the youngest of three, born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Hassan Moharrak and Yasmine al-Alfie told CNN that “convincing them [her family] to let her climb was as great a challenge as the mountain itself!”. Indeed, summiting a mountain is an immense physical feat but overcoming a policy of prohibition, especially when the dominant religious authority holds the view that opening sports to women and girls will lead to immorality or “steps of the devil,” as one prominent religious scholar put it is one which cuts to the core of societal and family support.

Going Places: Raha Moharrak, Youngest Woman to Summit Everest didn’t Crack Under Pressure

Saudi Arabia is the world’s most gender-segregated nation, but amid changes now under way, multiple generations of women are debating how to be truly modern and truly Saudi. – National Geographic

In March 2013, eight months after Saudi Arabia’s women made their Olympic debut, Raha Moharrak made history, becoming the youngest woman in the world and the first female mountaineer from Saudi Arabia to successfully scale Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak and in doing so, raised a million dollars for educating people in Nepal. It’s hard to imagine “not cracking under pressure” and accomplishing your objectives when over 2000 meters above sea level on the Kahiltna Glacier, your guide (Dave Hahn)) just told you, “As you may have heard, a climber has lost his life. They are evacuating his body. I want you to know this because I want you to know what you are dealing with. I want you to understand where you are, the type of place you are, and the consequences.” Moharrak told AramcoWorld how Hahn’s words made her uneasy. “It was a feeling I had to work through,” she says.

Moharrak with her TAG Heuer Connected

“I really don’t care about being the first, so long as it inspires someone else to be second.” – Raha Moharrak

Moharrak’s feat is backdropped by her country’s gradual warming to the idea of women participating in sports: That year it announced that Saudi Arabian girls were officially allowed to practice sports in private schools, which they had not officially been allowed to do previously. For the Olympic Games in Rio, Saudi Arabia fielded double the number of female athletes and by 2017, Princess Reema bint Bandar was appointed as the first female head of the Saudi Federation for Community Sports, promoting extensive reform in the kingdom’s Olympic Committee and sports federations covering sporting activities for men and women. Feather in the kingdom’s cap, 31-year-old, Moharrak then cemented herself as the best-known mountaineer of the region, achieving her ultimate dream of completing the Seven Summits after achieving Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America and in doing so, achieved not just a step up for herself but for female athletes all over Saudi Arabia saying, “I really don’t care about being the first, so long as it inspires someone else to be second.” Her face became an emblem for triumph in adversity prompting Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer to invite her as “Friend of the Brand” for their “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign that same year.

Moharrak as she plans her next adventure

“It is about passion and discovery; and that one-of-a-kind experience with an extra special je ne sais quoi that simply cannot be replciated. Plus, of course, a glass of champagne!” – Arnaud Champenois, Belmond SVP Brand and Marketing

Explore Good living with Raha Moharrak on Belmond Road to Mandalay

Having explored the major summits of the world and having surmounted the socio-cultural mountains of resistance and negativity, Raha Moharrak embarked on her next adventure – bringing her guests on a wholesome life-affirming exploration of northern Myanmar by boat.

I always advise people to take that first step. A journey as big as Everest started with a step and ended with a step. One of the most important things you can strive for is the curiosity to go after those things you don’t know – Raha Moharrak, Belmond Good Living ambassador

Unlike Moharrak’s own high risk adventures; whether it’s mindfulness in Anguilla or trekking in Myanmar, Belmond Good Living is about wellness, authenticity and timeless experiences. The Belmond Road to Mandalay plies the Irrawaddy River. The journey of 11 days includes onboard activities such as lectures and presentations on good living, demonstrations of longyi-tying – a kind of traditional Burmese sarong or ‘trousers’ or skirt, sunrise yoga sessions, meditation classes and of course cooking – consider it eat, pray, love but amidst the trappings of luxury as it makes ports of call to Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Bhamo.

Bagan

If life on-board wears thin, Belmond Road to Mandalay also visits remote villages in Bagan, Mandalay and Bhamo, providing cultural explorations of temples close to Myanmar’s border with China with an optional overnight stay at Tainpha Taung Meditation Centre. Once your mind and soul is sufficiently satiated, one can pick from a choice of four exceptional guided treks led by Raha Moharrak herself.

Belmond Road to Mandalay started life as a river cruiser on the Rhine in Europe but was completely redesigned and relaunched by Orient-Express Hotels in 1995. In 2014 the company changed its name to Belmond Ltd. and the ship was renamed Road to Mandalay.

In December 2018, the company was acquired by LVMH in a $3.2billion transaction delisting the company from the NYSE and making it 100% privately owned.
