Home Tour: NYC Dream Come True

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good industrial loft (did you follow our loft life from what feels like years ago??). But this loft in Soho (hello, second dream realized), designed by Tina Rich, combines classic downtown industrials details with a light, airy, dare I say California vibe.

home tour: stunning soho lofthome tour: stunning soho loft

Case in point, the epic kitchen. You might not immediately think you can combine exposed brick and rustic beams with bleached oak and a lovely light marble, but somehow it just works. The light tones brighten the space and neutralize any overly red moments in the exposed brick. A killer ceramics collection, including the season’s must-have fruit bowl, add more warmth and eclecticism.

The balance of warm and industrial continue to mix as you move into the seating area. A relaxed all-white chaise sofa feels incredibly laid back. Tones of blush, cream and natural materials soften things further. Sadly I don’t know the source of that amazing travertine and wood coffee table, but I’m determined to track it down!

The use of light oak carries into the dining area, where one of my favorite Apparatus Studio chandeliers (also seen in this stunning Hamptons home here) sits above a simple farmer’s style table. The pastel hues in the oversized art continue the softer color palette. I also spy vases by my new favorite ceramicist Simone Bodmer-Turner.

If you’ve read for awhile you know I have a love affair with steel and glass doors. They’re used here to create a lovely guest bedroom that can be flooded with natural light when the velvet curtains (in that yummy safe hue) are open. It also is the perfect incentive to make your bed.

When you have a jewel box of a bathroom to play with, you want to make every choice count. This bathroom does that perfectly. Tina mixed industrial materials to great effect. Concrete was used to create a built-in niche featuring steel shelves. Yet the floor and wall tile have softer textures that evokes textiles. The open sink helps the small space feel bigger. I also love using beautiful decorative objects in a bathroom. They help connect the design to the entire house.

I wouldn’t except these soft lines and natural materials in an urban loft but they work oh so well. And I spy one of my favorite discoveries from my recent travels in Scandinavia, the No.2 hanging lamp wall light by Valerie Objects.

In the master, clean lines but soft textures like an upholstered headboard makes this a room you just want to collapse into. With space at a premium in NYC, the wall-mounted side tables are a genius solution, while the leather hammocks hanging below offer a unique way to hold nighttime reading materials.

I don’t think I’d ever describe New York as relaxing, but I’d gladly take respite from the city that never sleeps in this beautiful space.

5 Ways To Enjoy Your Luxury Holiday With Complete Peace Of Mind

Have you been planning a big holiday all year and can think of nothing else as it approaches? The excitement that precedes a trip is hard to compare to anything else. As a savvy consumer, you are going to want to do everything you can to enjoy your holiday without any extra worries.

Nothing is going to destroy your well-deserved holiday faster than a mind full of anxiety and worry about what could happen. Continue along and you can get some great tips on how to ease any anxieties and have peace of mind during a trip.

Research And Buy Proper Travel Insurance

You can never predict what is going to happen in your life from one day to the next. There are always going to be surprises and situations that are completely unexpected. Having insurance for your trip will ensure that you don’t have to worry about the unpredictable. Most holidays will go along without a single thing out of the ordinary happening, yet it feels nice to know you have protection.

Look For All-Inclusive Holidays

For the traveller who really wants to unwind and not have to worry about anything but what time they eat for dinner, it is advisable to look into an all-inclusive holiday option. Many resorts will include all food, entertainment, and sometimes even flights in the price of your stay. With this option you don’t have to worry about budgeting or even where you are going to eat, everything will be right at your fingertips.

Learn About Your Destination

If you are one of those people that deal with overthinking or getting anxiety about the unknown, knowledge will be your best friend. Take your time to learn as much as you can about your holiday destination. If you are going to an area where they speak a different language, try to get a few basic phrases down. Whatever you can do to increase your awareness of the area is going to give you more peace of mind.

Have An Emergency Plan

As stated before, you can never predict everything that is going to happen. It is never a bad idea to figure out an emergency plan and solidify it with whoever you are travelling with. Plan for meeting spots, keep basic first aid supplies handy and make sure everyone can stay connected if going out separately.

Plan But Don’t Force Anything

The whole point of going on a holiday is to unwind and recharge from the steady grind of everyday life. It is great to have plans on holiday, as there are normally many places to visit and explore. Just realise that relaxation is going to be your top priority and if you don’t feel like doing something, you don’t need to. Sit back, relax, and just enjoy the holiday you worked so hard for.

A Little Work Goes A Long Way

There really is no need to be worried or full of anxiety about a holiday if you take the time to plan everything properly. If you are going to spend money and time on the perfect holiday it is important to do whatever you can to make sure it goes smoothly. With just a little extra work you can completely relax and take your holiday the way you were meant to.

Carlos Huber’s New West Village Apartment

I’m not supposed to play favorites but Carlos Huber was one of the most creative and interesting people I profiled in my book Creativity at Work. The architect turned perfumer creates scents for his line Arquiste that based on a certain time and place in history that he meticulously researches down to what wood might have been burned in a specific time period. I’ve seen two of his previous apartments but his new gut renovated West Village apartment featured on ArchitecturalDigest.com is the one that reflects his upbringing in Mexico City the most. Definitely check out the article for the full story and credits.

Bon Weekend: 27 September 2019

Photo of Park Avenue by me.

It’s starting to look a little bit like fall in New York but it definitely still feels like summer. I’m off on a field trip today but here are some things to do and places to go and this weekend.

My new iPhone 11 Pro is scheduled to arrive this weekend and I could not be more excited. Everyone is raving about the cameras and I can’t wait to take photos. I ordered mine online because I couldn’t find the color and size I wanted in New York. I probably should have gone over to the newly renovated Apple store on Fifth Avenue but I was worried about lines of people trying to buy their own phones and see the new store design. It was closed for two years while they added new entrances and natural light to the subterranean space. It’s now brightly lit and filled with plants and natural materials to help calm you while you get your laptop repaired or upgrade your phone.

I was supposed to see the Downton Abbey movie this Monday but the UN General Assembly madness made getting to the theatre a nightmare so I cancelled. I need to choose a new time to see the film adaptation of the television series that is getting rave reviews. If you haven’t seen the show, they say it doesn’t matter and the film stands on its own. Writer Julian Fellows is working on a few other television projects that I look forward to seeing soon too.

Another film getting rave reviews and standing ovations at film festivals is Judy. The bio pic about Judy Garland stars Renee Zellweger as the legendary singer and actress who is in London to performing sold-out shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. While there, she reminisces with friends and fans and begins a whirlwind romance.

When I first heard that a show titled The Politician was set to air on Netflix, I imagined a new younger version of House of Cards. Turns out it’s a star studded original black comedy about “a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, who has known since age 7 that he’s going to be president of the United States, but first he has to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all, Saint Sebastian High School.” All eight episodes are on Netflix now for your binging pleasure.

Unbelievable is a much darker show on Netflix based on a true story about a teen who reports being raped and then recants her story when no one believes her. Meanwhile, two female detectives investigating a series of eerily similar attacks in another area finally reveal the truth. To be honest, I fast forwarded a lot of the scenes of the young girl played by Kaitlyn Dever and preferred the scenes with the detectives played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever. I think Merritt Wever is amazing and should be in more things.

I’ve been wondering for most of the year if it would be possible to use iPhone to take photos for a book. I had to submit RAW images for color correction for the printing process for my book which I took on my professional Canon camera. I hate lugging it around but always have my iPhone with me. My question was answered when I saw that photographer Miguel Flores-Vianna’s book A Wandering Eye: Travels with my Phone. I had a chance to chat with him and his publisher from Vendome at an intimate breakfast at Ralph’s with Ralph Lauren Home on Tuesday. It’s a great book and now I’m inspired to finally work on my ideas for my second book.

Photo of The Met by me.

I took an unplanned trip to The Metropolitan Museum of Art this week too. It’s easy to pop in any time when you are a member. I started with Gallery 632 to see the Canalettos, Guardis, and Tiepolos that Jayne Wrightsman recently left to the museum and just wondered after which is the best way to see the Met.

Photo of The Met by me.

I was so glad I stopped by The Metropolitan Museum of Art when I saw the gorgeous displays of hydrangea in the great hall. They were created by the florist to the museum, Remco van Vliet, who founded Van Vliet & Trap with his brother Cas Trap. The Dutch duo took over the flowers at the Met from Chris Giftos who retired after creating them for 30 years. The Met has fresh flowers every week thanks to the generous endowment by Lila Acheson Wallace, a co-founder of Reader’s Digest, who I silently thank every time I visit.

On my list is a visit to The Met Breuer to see the new Vija Celmins career retrospective of approximately 120 works, from her earliest paintings made in Los Angeles in the 1960s to objects completed in New York in the last five years. It looks lovely.

I’ve always liked actress Demi Moore so I ordered her new book Inside Out: A Memoir. I didn’t realize how hard her life was growing up and I’m interested to learn more about her life.

If you need to do any fall shopping, you have one last day to take advantage of the Shopbop sale. Save 20% or 25% with the code STOCKUP19. Sorry those of you who read the blog via email will probably miss this sale. Another reason to stop by the website to see what’s new.

Bon week-end !

XOXO,

HC
