On 22 March 2022, Marriott International unveiled its agreement with Baraka Lodges LTD. in opening the first luxury safari lodge in Africa.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will situate inside the Masai Mara National Reserve — one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife conservation and wilderness regions. On the edge of the reserve and overlooking the prominent banks of the River Talek, the lodge’s prime location will give a distinctively elevated camp setting, from the abundant wildlife to endless plains and stunning vistas.

“This landmark project is in response to travellers’ growing desire for experiential offerings that enable them to build a deeper connection with their chosen destination. JW Marriott encourages guests to be mindful and present, which perfectly lends itself to meaningful safari holidays,”said Jerome Briet, Chief Development Officer, Europe, Middle East & Africa of Marriott International. Briet expressed the signing of the lodge as a milestone in Marriott International’s growth within Africa, as the multinational company enters the luxury safari segment.

The lavish and elegant retreat expects to welcome guests in 2023, offering a refined, unparalleled experience. The shared spaces will consist of a restaurant, lounge bar, spa, and a large outdoor terrace with fire pits that will play host to traditional Masai dance performances. Guests will also have the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinoceros and elephants.

Alicanto takes its name from Chilean mythology. It’s about a nocturnal bird rumoured to live in the Atacama Desert and feed exclusively on gold and silver.

Fontana Arte Alicanto

Fontana Arte Alicanto

Designed by the Italian artistic director of Fontana Arte, Francesco Librizzi, this arched lamp is poised like a bird, tilted with a forward imbalance to carry the light and to cast it as far as possible. The light flaunts technicality and its tiny metal feet give it the appearance of a bird with legs slightly apart. Alicanto comes in black/gold and white/gold colours while the diffuser is made from hand-blown etched glass.

Watches & Wonders 2022: Rolex Launches New Models

Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. Image: Rolex

Rolex has pulled the curtains back on its catalogue for this year’s edition of Watches & Wonders, and it’s no surprise that the collection is superb. Ranging from the Oyster Perpetual Air-King to the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, there’s a bit of something for every watch fan in this new release. Here’s a quick rundown on three of our favourite models.

Oyster Perpetual Air-King

Oyster Perpetual Air-King
Oyster Perpetual Air-King. Image: Rolex

Designed as a tribute to the pioneers of aviation, the Air-King is certainly worthy of its name. Featuring a completely redesigned case with crown guard and straight sides (like the majority of Professional category models), the new model exudes quality and class.

Oyster Perpetual Air-King
Oyster Perpetual Air-King. Image: Rolex

Proportions have been given a slight tweak as well, with the most notable change being a broadened center link. The new Air-King is also equipped with calibre 3230, a well-loved movement at the forefront of watchmaking.

Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. Image: Rolex

A guaranteed favourite amongst travellers, the GMT-Master II was built to go places. On this model, the crown and crown guard are placed on the left side of the watch. Another marked difference are the date aperture and Cyclops lens which have been moved to the 9 o’clock position.

Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

These significant changes prompted Rolex to make several technical changes on this GMT-Master II. Made from Oystersteel and fitted with an Oyster bracelet, this GMT-Master II features a classic aesthetic and a two-colour monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in green and black ceramic. This colour pairing is another first for this model.

Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42

Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. Image: Rolex

For the first time ever, Rolex is offering the Yacht-Master 42 in yellow gold — a nod to refinement. Previously offered in 18 ct white gold, the new model will be offered in 18 ct yellow gold. Like the original — which was first launched in 1992 — this Yacht-Master 42 will also include a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a Cerachrom insert and a raised graduation.

The watch is also fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet, and features calibre 3235. The Yacht-Master is the embodiment binding Rolex to the world of sailing, and this new release blends functionality, luxury and nautical style seamlessly.

Glacial Depths: Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date

Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date
Image: Montblanc

A mountaineering brand at heart, Montblanc finally found a way to properly expresses a dive watch, the Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date, while staying true to its roots. Glaciers are the name of the game, although any visitor to the Alps will surely know about the many wonderful lakes in the area. The dive watch is a staple in contemporary watchmaking, and every serious watch brand has one, or something like it. The Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date is a dive watch, through and through, being ISO 6425 certified. To be completely upfront about it, what you will want to know is the price, because it is a real winner. It clocks in at S$4,400 (CHF3,000).

We, and no doubt other observers, can quite happily report that the 1858 Iced Sea is a lot of watch for that price. Where some might expect Montblanc to invoke its Minerva heritage and head for the stratosphere in terms of pricing, the brand has recognised the opportunity at the under CHF3,000 level. We salute them for this, and have been eagerly waiting for our shot at publicly declaring this since we were introduced to this dive watch earlier this year. Unfortunately, it was destined for Watches & Wonders Geneva so we had to bide our time.

Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date
Image: Montblanc
Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date, Black Dial
Image: Montblanc

Now a great price is just a good start these days, for a dive watch. Montblanc believes the answer is in a superlative dial. This is a good choice for the brand that delivered the Geospheres watch, and it bears some explaining. Certainly the dial is beautiful, but it is also technically challenging, involving no less than 30 processes for each dial. Montblanc’s watchmaking boss Laurent Lecamp says this dial is unparalleled in all its qualities amongst dive watches, and he is probably right about that. In this sense, the 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date offers value for money and a unique character.

Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date, dials
Image: Montblanc

The above are two of the three pillars Lecamp says are vital to every watch from Montblanc. The final element is the story the watch tells, and here there is no real history. Instead, we have the untold story — as far as dive watches go — of glaciers, which might also be an interesting opportunity for Montblanc to do some good. No doubt time will tell the real story of the 1858 Iced Sea Automatic Date so we will finish here with the specifications of the watch. It is not a small watch at 41mm in steel, but this is to be expected given that water-resistance is 300 metres. Interestingly, the Iced Sea has an all-new bracelet that is interchangeable. The watch is not a limited edition and features a modified Selina movement.

A Rundown of the Coveted Nike x Drake NOCTA Collection

NOCTA Yellow Puffer Jacket
Image: NOCTA

The relationship between Drake and Nike can be traced back to 2013, when the Canadian rapper flaunted his two pairs of Air Jordan 10s. Over the years, Drake would be since wearing apparel from Nike. These include tracksuits, Air Maxes and other drops solely made for the rapper like the Nike Max Plus “For Stage Use” and the Zoom Vomero 5 in a unique colourway.

In December 2020, Drake dropped the bomb that he would be releasing a clothing line with Nike and has christened the collection to be “NOCTA”. As described on Nike’s website, NOCTA is a collection for the collective. “The form-fitting apparel nods to sport, but is rooted in and inspired by those who roam the streets, those who are on the go and want functional, comfortable and elevated everyday essentials.”

The ensemble designs are a nod to Nike’s evolution through the years. Another interpretation of NOCTA could allude to the rapper’s “nocturnal creative process”. The spirit of the night is reflected in the collection, such as the reflective-design piping.

The collection debuted four items for the inaugural drop: a puffer jacket, hoodie, fleece pants, and socks. The first release featured two colours, either black or yellow. In an official press release from Nike regarding the collaboration, Drake said, “I mean, growing up, Nike was everything. It felt like every shoe I wanted, every athlete I liked, everything I owned was Nike. It didn’t mean anything unless it had a Swoosh.”

Nike NOCTA Hot Step
Image: Nike

The NOCTA collection flew off the shelves, making it one of Nike’s most popular capsule collections. After getting a taste of the apparel line, fans are now clamouring for some footwear to complete the look. Earlier this March, the duo finally launched its sneakers. Coming in two colourways for a start, in either white or black, the Nike NOCTA Hot Step sneakers boast 3M piping, premium pebbled leather and a colourful Air unit. Overall, the Hot Step calls to mind sneaker silhouettes of the late 90s — perfect for adding to your rotation of sneakers to wear this spring.

Qatar Expands Cultural Initiatives With 3 New Museums

Art Mill, Qatar Museums
A rendering of Art Mill. Image: Elemental

As part of ambitious cultural plans, the Gulf nation of Qatar intends to build three new museums in Doha, each designed by a Pritzker Prize-winning architect. Qatar hopes to rebrand the region’s image and move closer to its goal — established fifteen years ago — of becoming an arts and culture hub.

The plans were announced on 27 March during the online Doha Forum by the chairperson of Qatar Museums, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Touted as “the undisputed queen of the art world” by Forbes, Sheikha Al Mayassa has led Qatar Museums to an estimated annual spend of US$1 billion. The double major in Political Science and Literature was ranked 91 on the Forbes Power Women list and featured in the Time 100 in 2014, according to Business of Fashion.

The two-day forum was focused on Qatar’s creative economy as well as the current and future institutions that will help to advance it. As per a statement by Sheikha Al Mayassa, the plans were a “strategy for investing in the creative economy to drive the next phase of development of Qatar”.

She was joined by ELEMENTAL’s Alejandro Aravena and Jacques Herzog of Herzog & de Meuron along with fellow panellists Abdulrahman Hesham Al Sowaidi, Acting CEO of Qatar Development Bank, Beirut-based artist Najla El Zein who designed the public seating at FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022’s signature Flag Plaza, and David Beckham.

Alejandro Aravena of ELEMENTAL and Jacques Herzog of Herzog & de Meuron

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup in November, Qatar Museums will be presenting over 40 new and commissioned public works. These works will be displayed throughout Doha, from shopping areas and athletic facilities to Q-Rail stations and select stadiums poised to host the World Cup Games.

Qatar has been repeatedly called out for worker mistreatment and thousands of deaths being linked to the stadiums being built for the forthcoming World Cup. The Gulf nation signed an agreement with the UN in 2017, promising labour reforms. The end of the No-Objection Certificate requirement is included, which will enable workers to change jobs without the employers’ permission.

Qatar Museums’ portfolio of museums includes the National Museum of Qatar designed by Jean Nouvel in 2019, the Museum of Islamic Art by I.M. Pei in 2008, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, as well as a couple of other galleries and ‘art spaces’. The planned trio of museums is the Art Mill, the Lusail Museum and Qatar Auto Museum.

Art Mill

In 2017, Santiago-based architecture firm ELEMENTAL won the bid for the massive project via competition. The Art Mill will be realised at the site of a historic Doha flour mill, measuring up to 80,000 square metres. In addition to the aforementioned exhibition and performance spaces, the new museum will have dedicated areas for artist residency programs, a “village for Qatari creative industries”, production facilities, public gardens and more.

Art Mill, Qatar Museums
A rendering of Art Mill. Image: ELEMENTAL

Chilean architect and director Aravena expressed during the panel: “The Art Mill will not just be a perfectly finished object but an opportunity for young designers, artisans, craftspeople in Qatar to come together to deliver the knowledge they have accumulated and contribute to the building, so that it not only houses a great collection but expands to more popular audiences.”

The silos in the mill will be publicly accessible from this October.

Lusail Museum

Meanwhile, the Lusail Museum will be housing “the world’s most extensive collection of Orientalist paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, rare texts, and applied arts”. Designed by Basel-based firm Herzog & de Meuron, the four-story building will span about 52,000 square metres with dedicated educational hubs, exhibition galleries, an auditorium and a library.

At the forum, Swiss architect Herzog stated that the project has become more of what Qatar tries to be while it moves forward, which is a platform for exchange and debate. To him, the debate aspect is significant to a museum where the collection is mainly about how the East and West have been in exchange for political, social and cultural issues from years ago.

“The building is a kind of vessel that inside has a complex topography, a clash of fragments of different places and functions. What we have learned during this process, to make space for that aspect of dialogue, is what will make the project important for Qatar and for us,” Herzog said.

Qatar Auto Museum

Lastly, the Qatar Auto Museum will be designed by the international architectural firm OMA, which has previously built the Qatar National Library in 2017. The institution will include spaces for temporary exhibitions of high-profile vehicles, a classic-car restoration centre, a children’s activity zone featuring driving simulators and other car-themed interactive diversions, according to The Architect’s Newspaper. It will also have 40,000 square metres of permanent galleries “tracking the evolution of the automobile from its invention through today and how it has influenced culture in Qatar”, as per World-Architects.

Watch the Doha Forum panel below.

Project timelines and design particulars of the new museums from OMA, ELEMENTAL, and Herzog & de Meuron are yet to be released. The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum open on 31 March.

The Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557 Thrills With Its Ingenious Complication

Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557
Image: Breguet

On the cusp of Watches & Wonders 2022, Breguet (politely, as we would imagine) threw down the gauntlet to its esteemed horological counterparts for the GMT watch of 2022 with the release of the Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557. Having decided to revamp the Marine collection five years ago, the Marine Hora Mundi 5557 joins the likes of the time-only Marine 5517, Marine Chronographe 5527, and Alarme Musicale 5547 that were released in 2018. This introduction will not only see Breguet’s vision for the sporty outlier slowly coming to fruition but also allay lingering fears as many thought the initial move was a huge gamble by Breguet.

While the Hora Mundi is not entirely new to Breguet (having made its first appearance in the Classique Hora Mundi 5717 in 2011), this new piece signals its maiden foray into the Marine collection. In a nutshell, the Marine Hora Mundi 5557 allows the owner to cycle between the current and a preset time zone on demand. At the heart of the self-winding calibre 77F1 lies an instant-change dual-time display with a mechanical memory wheel responsible for this snappy action.

An additional module with programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory wheels accounts for the time differences between the various cities. Actuating the pusher at seven o’clock changes not only the time but also the retrograde date and day/night indicator without interrupting the basic timekeeping mechanism. Kudos to Breguet for gatekeeping this bit of innovation as four patents were previously filed to ensure this is a well-guarded secret. While no details about the module were disclosed, we will not be surprised silicon components are in play given they have excellent shape retention and do not require lubrication.

Though much of the calibre remains relatively untouched since the Classique Hora Mundi 5717, the aesthetics have been reinterpreted to match the sporting elegance of the Marine collection. Many will be thrilled to know that water resistance has been vastly improved as well. Inspired by Abraham-Louis Breguet’s ties with the French Navy which began in 1814, a world map set against the seven seas serves as the dial for the Marine Hora Mundi 5557. The base layer is crafted from gold, with the wave motifs first hand-guillochéd being adorned with a shade of abyssal blue. A sapphire plate is later superimposed, depicting the meridians, parallels and continents with a turquoise outline representing the coastlines.

Beyond the masterful dial, creation lies intricacies waiting to be discovered. The continent plates feature subtle horizontal brushing while the photorealistic renditions of the sun and moon are hand-hammered before being set in rose-gold and rhodium respectively. A “u-shape” hand indicating the date at 12 o’clock is finished with brouillage — an updated ancient watchmaking decoration that creates a matte yet shiny effect. True to the Marine collection is the luminous Breguet handset and Roman numerals set on the flange supporting the various dial elements. All of these are set in either a 43.9mm white or rose gold case with the emblematic case side decors and paired with either a leather strap, rubber strap or gold bracelet.

On Newsstands: WOW Spring 22

The new year brings new challenges, and a welcome return of some Before Times staples, which are the subjects preoccupying the WOW Singapore team in the Spring 2022 issue. While this is technically the first issue of the new year, it is really the last issue of the year that was in horology. And what a year it was!

Indeed, the cover watch is one that pays tribute to the past: the Blancpain Air Command. WOW comes to grips with this true collector’s favourite, which also happens to be a superb break from the onslaught of luxury sports watches and dive watches that marked 2021 — a tsunami that began as a swell in 2016.

Speaking of which, the main feature section of the Spring issue takes an in-depth look at so-called investment grade watches and even entire brands. Of course no such discussion would be complete without a selection of under-the-radar watches, which we have curated, as per our tradition since 2020.

Finally, the leaders of HYT, Norqain, Zenith and Van Cleef & Arpels speak with the editors on their next moves, and what moves the market.
