Nordgreen: The Gift That Keeps Giving

Nordgreen Chronograph Black Dial
Image: Nordgreen

Let’s face it — a significant proportion of gifts we receive end up in a drawer somewhere, never to see the light of day again until the next spring clean. They’re then quickly ejected into a pile to be donated or, unfortunately, thrown away. This goes for all kinds of gifts, from ties to necklaces to perfume and even watches. So what should you get your loved one for their birthday or that special anniversary?

Well, if it’s a watch you’re looking for then we’d suggest Nordgreen, a Scandinavian company that designs aesthetically pleasing, functional timepieces. Most importantly, however, these products are all crafted through sustainable practices, as you can tell from the name of the brand.

Nordgreen Chronograph Black Dial

Nordgreen

Nordgreen was started by Pascar Sivam and Vasilij Brandt, who wanted to build a brand that would not only preach sustainability but actually practice it. To realise this dream, they employed the expertise of master designer Jakob Wagner, who has earned numerous awards for his designs with Bang & Olufsen, Hay, B&B Italia, and Cappellini. The name, Nordgreen, is a common one in Denmark that combines “Nord” for Nordic identity, and “Green” for the company’s commitment to the environment.

Nordgreen Giving Back Program
Image: Nordgreen

Sustainability is a key part of Nordgreen’s business, from its head office in Copenhagen to its supply chain and its manufacturing process. We’d be here all day if we were to discuss all Nordgreen does to achieve its sustainability goals, but it’s important to highlight a few just to show you how serious this company is about its green initiatives. For example, its head office in Copenhagen only uses electricity from renewable energy sources. It’s also working towards a zero-waste policy in the workspace. If that’s not enough, the office is now also carbon-neutral, having supported the chosen to support Burgos Wind Project in the Philippines. This UN-certified project focuses not only on producing clean energy but also on developing projects with the local governments and communities that promote the protection of the environment.

When it comes to CSR, Nordgreen walks the walk with its Giving Back Program. Having partnered up with three NGOs, the company ensures its customers that a part of every watch purchase is donated to a worthy cause. Through partnerships with charitable organisations, Nordgreen and its customers are able to contribute in the areas of education, health, and protection of the planet. Nordgreen also has interim partnerships with various NGOs that have been set up to tackle urgent global causes — these are reviewed through quarterly CSR campaigns.

Product Highlight: Pioneer Chronograph

Nordgreen has a sizeable collection of timepieces, from the men’s Philosopher and Native to the women’s Unika and Infinity. The one we’d like to highlight today, however, is the Pioneer Chronograph. This watch marries Nordgreen’s idiosyncratic clean look with the evergreen functionality of a chronograph. The 42mm case is available in Silver, Rose Gold and Gunmetal finishes. The dial is also available in a range of colours, from a classic White and Black to the more adventurous Navy and Sunray Green.

The Pioneer Chronograph features a sapphire crystal that provides excellent scratch resistance and a Japanese Quartz movement that has been touted to remain accurate for extended periods. As with all of Nordgreen’s watches, the Pioneer Chronograph is available in a wide variety of straps, from leather to rubber and nylon. If you’re purchasing it as a gift, you can even build a set with interchangeable straps.

Brad Pitt Sues Angelina Jolie For Selling Her Stakes in Château Miraval

Hollywood actor Brad Pitt is suing ex-wife Angelina Jolie for selling her stake in the French vineyard, Château Miraval, which the couple had bought in 2012. The southern France estate cost the duo €25 million and served as the wedding venue in 2014.

In the dispute filed in Los Angeles, Pitt said that Jolie had broken their agreement not to sell their stakes in the château without the other party’s consent. The shares under the Hollywood actress were sold to Tenute del Mondo in 2021 to a business unit under vodka company Stoli Group, owned by Russian businessman Yuri Shefler.

“She sold her interest with the knowledge and intention that Shefler and his affiliates would seek to control the business to which Pitt had devoted himself and to undermine Pitt’s investment in Miraval,” the lawsuit claimed.

Pitt aims to void the winery sale, which he takes credit for transforming the estate into a “multimillion-dollar international success story and one of the world’s most highly regarded producers of rosé wine”.

Chateau Miraval

The lawsuit continues saying that “the purported sale deprives Pitt of his right to enjoy his private home and to oversee the business he developed from scratch”.

Located between Marseille and Nice, Château Miraval is situated in the village of Correns, and the sprawling property includes a house and extensive vineyards. Annual revenues from the winery exceed US$50 million.

Beneteau to premiere Oceanis Yacht 60 at Cannes

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

Beneteau is developing a new flagship sailing yacht, with the Oceanis Yacht 60 scheduled to premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11.

The Oceanis Yacht 60 ocean cruiser has been designed by Italians Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento, who also designed the Oceanis Yacht 54. Featuring a gentle reverse sheer, the elegant 18m hull profile of the 60 echoes that of its 54ft sister.

The cockpit’s matching sofas, tables and sunbathing areas continue the Oceanis Yacht design, while the safe, free-flowing movement includes wide side-decks that run around the helm stations and offer access to the foredeck.

With two helm stations, controlling the boat’s course is as easy as trimming the sails, windward or leeward. The owner can carry out all the usual manoeuvres without leaving the helm, a plus on a big boat when sailing short-handed.

An innovative bimini is supported by the mainsail arch, keeping sheets safe and out of the way, and comes in an optional rigid version. Maintained by two lateral supports, the central section can slide forward to adjust the amount of cover in the cockpit.

The large bathing platform provides access to a garage that can house a 2.8m jet-propelled tender, which is launched and retrieved by a system with double wires and guiding rollers. Onboard systems such as Ship Control and Seanapps manage the boat’s systems and simplify maintenance and monitoring.

The companionway leads down to a large, well-lit interior featuring side and overhead skylights, with walnut as a standard finish and light oak as an option. The saloon features a C-shaped sofa and a table by the port hull window, while to starboard is a two-seat sofa and a curved chart table with seat.

The galley is positioned just forward of midships for greater stability and is full beam, with storage and a fridge to port, a sink, oven and dishwasher to starboard, plus plenty of storage and worktop surfaces.

Accommodation comprises a master suite forward and two en-suite aft cabins. Illuminated by hull windows and four skylights, the master starts with an en-suite to starboard, while the bed is lined with extensive storage spaces and faces a TV on the forward bulkhead.

Dubai’s Museum of the Future: An Architectural Marvel

Dubai Museum of the Future
Image: Museum of the Future

The Museum of the Future in Dubai opened last week and has since been called “the most beautiful building in the world” by UAE vice president Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

After a two-month delay, the futuristic museum opened its doors on 22 February 2022. The palindrome day is considered the most exceptional date in over a decade — a fitting launch day for a magnificent structure.

The Building

Located in Dubai’s Financial District, the structure is just a short walk from the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa skyscraper. The seven-story building is 77 meters tall and covers an area of 30,548 square metres. The whole area is symbolic. The building’s unique oval shape represents humanity; the green mound below represents the earth; the void represents the unknown future.

Designed by architecture firm Killa Design and led by Shaun Killa, the building has already been listed as one of National Geographic’s most beautiful museums. The magazine commended the Museum of the Future to have astonishing architecture craft from refined materials “boosted by technological innovations including 3D modelling and parametric construction”.

On its exterior, Arabic calligraphy envelopes the circular building as windows. The calligraphy was a quote from the Dubai ruler, who said: “Innovation is not an intellectual luxury. It is the secret behind the evolution and rejuvenation of nations and peoples.”

The architectural marvel has no internal columns and is supported by a steel structure that was “digitally grown” using parametric tools. The museum was co-constructed alongside engineering consultancy Buro Happold.

The Experience

The museum was built for the Dubai Future Foundation, which was set up in 2016 to institutionalise future-shaping. The belief is that leading in the present is not enough. It is the future that humankind must imagine, design, and execute.

Dubai Museum of the Future

Envisioned by a team of visionary designers, artists, and filmmakers, the museum is curated to be a blend of exhibitions, immersive theatre, and themed attractions. Each specific floor is dedicated to various experiences. Three of the floors are immersive exhibitions that feature health and wellbeing, ecosystems and bioengineering, as well as outer space resource development.

Other floors will demonstrate near-future technologies aiming to revolutionise the world. There is also a floor for children to explore and solve challenges. Additionally, the museum contains many laboratory spaces, a 1,000-capacity multi-use hall, and a 345-seat lecture theatre.

As per Mohammed Al Gergawi, chairman of the Dubai Future Foundation, on dezeen: “The Museum of the Future is a ‘living museum’, constantly adapting and metamorphosing as its very environment drives continual and iterative change to its exhibits and attractions.”

The Vision

The Museum of the Future brands itself as “a beacon of hope” — a home for optimistic imagination and a platform for people to put down their commitment to a more sustainable future. Representing the UAE vice president’s vision, the museum seeks to positively inspire and empower people to shape humanity’s progression.

Through its exhibitions, publications, public events and films, the museum will showcase how current problems can, in turn, provide solutions towards a better world. The Museum of the Future will also mainly promote technological development and innovation, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics.

G.S Sareen, Founder and CEO of Omni United: Humble Beginnings To Extraordinary Feats

Founded in 2003, Omni United is one of the most dynamic companies in the global tyre industry. Leading the company is G.S Sareen, founder, president and CEO of the Singapore-headquartered establishment. Tyres from Omni United are highly-sought after in over 50 countries.

Managing a company for more than two decades is no easy feat, and to continuously sustain this drive for success takes more than just passion. In a recent chat with LUXUO, Sareen candidly revealed that the inspiration behind setting up Omni United was simply survival: he needed to support his family and that became his raison d’etre.

Launching Omni United

Initially, the company was simply a commercial enterprise and a source of income for Sareen, however, years at the helm of Omni United has resulted in a strong emotional attachment for him. The once transactional relationship is now a familial tie that comprises members from multiple countries, who are all “gainfully employed”.

With a large part of the company’s business conducted in the US and Europe, the decision to make Singapore Omni United’s base was curious, to say the least. Initially, Sareen was looking to move to Dubai when he was about to leave India, his home country. After discussing with his travel agent, however, he decided to make the switch to the Lion City thanks to its tremendous potential. At the time, his agent highlighted Singapore as a major trading hub that served all of Asia Pacific. In contrast, Dubai only served countries in Africa and the affluence between the two regions was also starkly different.

Sareen didn’t immediately set up Omni United when he arrived in Singapore. Considering the country’s location in the heart of the rubber industry, however, a light bulb went off in his head. Singapore’s close proximity to rubber suppliers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand made it an ideal location to set up a tyre company’s headquarters. Armed with this idea and a drive to succeed, Sareen went about setting things in motion. The rest as they say, is history. Omni United cornered a niche market, which we will discuss in the next section, and went on to become a top tyre company.

Evolution of consumer profiles over the years

As the demand for Omni United products evolved over the years, so too has the profile of the consumers buying tyres. In the past, the company’s target audience would be drivers looking to get the most bang for their buck. For this group of consumers, owning and servicing a vehicle would account for a substantial portion of their wages.

Radar Tyres, Omni United
Image: Omni United

Sareen saw this as an opportunity and positioned Omni United to plug the gap in the market for well-made, affordable tyres. Priced relatively lower than other competitors in the market, Omni United managed to capture this segment of consumers. Cheaper goods are often relegated to be inferior to goods of a premium price. This is obviously not true and tyres from Omni United are certainly of top quality having passed all the necessary tests.

Over the years, there has been a gradual shift in how consumers make their purchases. Getting information regarding a particular product is now easier and because they are more well-informed, the new generation of consumers are not basing their decision solely on the pricing of the goods. Oftentimes, the top market players justify the products’ premium prices to its legacy. This so-called “legacy cost” refers to the “hundred years of development of the brand” and trust that has been cultivated. This is similar to a leather good from Louis Vuitton or a sports car from Bugatti.

In an era where information is readily available, consumers are concerned with the real value of the product. Real in the sense that it does not only help to improve a car’s quantitative performance, but a lot of the intangible qualities associated with it. Sareen understands that to keep ahead of his competitors, he has to devote time and money to push for innovation.

To that end, Omni United has had a great head start. It is the first company in the world to design a tyre that is manufactured carbon-neutral and it is called, “Radar Tyres”. This new flagship brand was designed

after commissioning a consultant company to find out how much carbon emission is released in the production of a single tyre. Through that study, Omni United was able to quantify its carbon footprint, make changes to its manufacturing and business processes and offset the remaining carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits and become carbon neutral.
Radar Tyres
Image: Omni United

Moving forward, the company has sealed a partnership with renowned Italian automotive design house, GFG Style. The design house has been responsible for the design of numerous iconic brands like Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati and others. With this new collaboration, GFG Style will design Omni United’s Radar Tyres and the first series of products will be out in the North American market in Q3 of 2022.

Beyond the automotive industry and issues relating to sustainability, the company is also looking to effect change in the community. Such as its constant support for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for the past ten years. The company has donated nearly US$1.4 million to fund 28,000 hours of critical lifesaving research. To support a cause like breast cancer research, to Sareen, is the most direct way of helping to solve problems our society is facing.

Sareen may not be the typical leader that you will come across — someone who has high hopes, big dreams and is on a mission to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. That is not to say he does not hold any aspirations, instead, he is grounded in pragmatism and methodically maps out the steps that are needed to achieve his goals.
