Vive la France! Bleue, Blanc & Rouge

France has just elected a new president who will be inaugurated on Sunday the 14th, and with the country taking the news’ headlines this past weekend for good reason, it has been difficult to not have the beloved country on my mind. And so today, a bit of homage paid to the country whose symbolic lady of liberty is Marianne through the medium of style. And a bit of history.

The tricolore, as it is known, was officially adopted as the country’s flag on February 15, 1794, and while there are a variety of meanings behind the symbolic nature of each color, here are a few: the three elements of the revolutionary motto, liberté (freedom: blue), égalité (equality: white), fraternité (brotherhood: red);  the three main estates of the Ancien Régime (the clergy: white, the nobility: red and the bourgeoisie: blue), laid in superior order – blue followed by red; or perhaps the colours of Paris (red and blue) and the House of Bourbon (white). A few more ideas are shared here. Now for the stylish inspiration, and remember, click on any image to be redirected to its original source.
