If the empty walls in your home are screaming at you right now for leaving them barren, boy do I have some good news for you—the latest design trend doesn’t require the purchase of 20 pieces to make the perfect gallery wall. The solution du’ jour is oversized art.
The trend is clogging up my Pinterest feed, so I thought it was due time to lust after some good, big (emphasis on big) art. Plus, let’s be honest, gallery walls are great, but they’ve been done. And done and done. Am I right? It’s time to move on to bigger (literally) and better things.
But what exactly do I mean when I say oversized art? I’m talking one very large scale piece of art versus several smaller ones. Something that makes a statement and demands conversation. Like the gorgeous options below.
You can take take the look of oversized art in any direction you want—photography, abstract, wording, lots of negative space. I prefer the look of oversized pieces in a neutral color palette or at least in muted tones. That way the oversized piece doesn’t overwhelm a space. But really, you can go any direction you desire. The art world is your oyster.
I’m thinking this trend could be especially fantastic for the minimalists among us because how does that old saying go? Ah, yes, “less is more.” And with oversized art, you no longer have bare walls, but only need one simple piece to complete your room. Although this trend really works no matter what your design style is.
One of my favorite examples I’ve come across is the idea of doing two giant pieces next to each other in opposing color ways, like this example:
How stunning is that? Definitely a conversation starter, if you ask me. Might be something I have to try in our dining room. Jumbo pieces like that would also look cool leaned up behind a couch.
I may be slightly behind the curve on trying this trend – it’s been gaining steam in the design world for a season or two now, but I feel like it’s just starting to really hit the mainstream.
If you’ve seen the oversized art trend during various sessions of Pinterest cruising and are wondering where on earth you’d hang something so big, the most popular in-house location for one of these babies is usually the entryway or dining room. But honestly, the possibilities really are endless. You can make a dramatic statement by hanging a piece above your bed or by utilizing a wall going up a staircase—it’s up to you!
