A Genuine Japanese Dining Experience: Masamune in Fort Lauderdale

In the era of Asian fusion and cuisine crafted for the ‘gram, it can be hard to find traditional flavors. For those searching for a genuine Japanese dining experience, look no further than the hidden treasure known as Masamune. It’s everything you would hope for from an authentic hole-in-the-wall: fresh fish that’s imported, not frozen, and classic Japanese dishes that are hard-pressed to find elsewhere, such as jellyfish salad.

The charming décor is welcoming and laid-back. The walls are decorated with peaceful scenes of cherry blossom trees and jellyfish, and there is plenty of seating both on the main floor and at the sushi bar. We chose a table on the main floor with a great view of the sushi bar.

Masamune offers a well-rounded selection of Japanese dishes including traditional ramen, teriyaki, and a robot menu of meats and fish cooked to perfection. We cannot forget the showstopper: fresh sushi with fish imported overnight from Japan. This definitely impressed me and the quality really speaks for itself.

For our meal, we started with some savory pork gyoza and delicate shrimp shumai appetizers which were delicious morsels packed with flavor. These were followed by a traditional salmon roll, one of my go-to sushi orders and this one did not disappoint. Masamune’s sushi is where you can really taste the difference between authentic cuisine and most modern fusion places: not only was the salmon flavorful, but the wasabi and ginger are fresh, and their unique soy sauce is house-made, low-sodium, and scrumptious. We followed up with the US-1 roll, a house favorite with shrimp tempura, a generous amount of avocado, and dynamite. We also ordered chicken liver off the robata menu, which was surprisingly light and tasty for liver, as well as the mouthwatering duck. It’s safe to say, we did not leave hungry!

Our meal was delightful from start to finish: the service is impeccable, the food is incredible, and the wide variety of menu items make it impossible to get bored. We’ll have to keep coming back if we want to try everything so I am thankful we live close by!

Masamune has two different locations in Fort Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach. You can access their website here!
