Eight years since the day we first met and still going strong! Mr S and I like to celebrate the anniversary of the day we first met as well as our wedding anniversary. I firmly believe in celebrating every little thing possible! This year, I booked Michelin-starred Trinity in Clapham on the basis of a recommendation from my friend Gary Berry blogger at The Foodaholic.
I really like the decor and atmosphere of Trinity which struck the perfect balance of casual and buzzy but with a touch of elegant formality. Those looking for something even more casual can head to up to Trinity Upstairs which offers a seasonal selection of small plates from the Bib Gourmand award winning kitchen.
The starting snacks were lovely, cheese gougère (baked choux pastry) along with caviar crackers gave us a taster of what was to come before taking a look at the menu. There’s the option to go for three courses or four from the menu created by chef Adam Byatt. Adam Byatt has become a big name in the restaurant industry since Trinity opened in 2006, having worked in starry kitchens such as Claridges and The Square before opening his first restaurant, Thyme, in 2001 with Trinity following a few years later.
I alway judge a place on it’s bread and Trinity serves delicious read rolls with a wonderful soft salted butter.
Mr S opted for a beef tartare, pickled mushrooms, smoked bone marrow and Oscietra caviar starter which was delicious and also beautifully presented. My warm salad of chestnuts, Jerusalem artichoke and truffle sounded simple but the ingredients were excellent quality and it was a fantastic combination.
My sardine bolognese raviolo with a light red mullet soup and basil was made with the finest of pasta and had a beautiful salty balance.
Mr S’s croustillant d’Oeufs de Caille was made with fine pastry and topped with soft boiled quails eggs.
We opted to share two fish main courses which were great light options. I wasn’t too sure about the Cornish cod ‘a la Grenobloise’ with cauliflower and brown shrimps as the taste of olives dominated all other flavours.
But I was a big fan of the Dover sole baked in truffle butter ‘Bonne Femme’ served with mushrooms.
There was no question about our dessert choice… the restaurant’s signature whole tarte tatin for two to share. Only seven are made per day and must be ordered in advance… the tarte itself is huge and served with prune and armagnac ice cream – you can eat as much as you like and then take it home. I really enjoyed my slice of tart though would have preferred a little less star anise but it wasn’t too much of a problem.
We loved our meal at Trinity and the restaurant really has a great balance of not being overly formal but still very special for an occasion.
