I know it might seem like you need to tackle a yard project say, before a big holiday, but I firmly believe that even though summer’s days are starting to wane, it’s never too late to up your yard game. I’m taking my own advice….and fully gutting my entire yard at the moment! There will be all new decks, brand new fencing, a fire pit, built-in seating, a new office for me (woot!) – it’s….a lot. I gave a little sneak peek on IGTV this weekend (do you follow me there?? If not please click here).
The video sparked a little controversy in comments over our need to remove some trees so I thought I’d share our entire plan in more detail here on the blog. I’m working away on that post, because this project isn’t simple my friends, but in the meantime, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite quick tips to amp up your outdoor space before Labor Day rolls around. It’s going to be here way too quickly!
Put a Pot on It
If, like me, you don’t have the greenest of thumbs nor the desire to take care of a high maintenance garden, fear not! You can create an inviting space with a few simple potted plants. From potted citrus trees to herbs, or simply a good structural plant or two, you can add a punch of life to your outdoor space and a few gorgeous terra cotta or vintage pots to boot – no garden required.
Add a Major Moment
This decking situation is one of my major inspirations for our yard makeover. The mix of wood tones with that stunning black fence offers such an eye-catching look. I officially need some shou sugi ban in my life stat. But you don’t have to take on a project of that scale to create high contrast. You can simply breakout some black paint to replicate this beautiful mix.
Bring the Inside Out
Outdoor furniture has come a long way. It’s no longer just a folding chair or picnic table. Now you can create a comfy, living room feel with full sized sofas, coffee tables, outdoor rugs and accessories to maximize the livable feel of your yard. This is indoor/outdoor living at its very best.
Add a Pop of Print
While I may eschew color, a fun graphic print immediately enlivens even the most blah of yards. A table cloth, chair cushions and some fun outdoor pillows will create a totally inviting moment. This is fabulous solution for a patio or super small space too.
Light My Fire
Nothing says outdoor entertaining like dining under twinkling light. Add a mix of lanterns, cafe lights, tiki torches and candles to your outdoor table, along a wall or strung across a pergola to up the ambiance. A collection of baskets and vases creates a moment of texture and homeyness.
Not one to be satisfied with a quick fix, I’m sitting here listening to jackhammers as I type this. Stay tuned – a full download on our plan coming shortly! Keep following on Instagram for real time updates.
