Fun Events in May & Top Dining, Style and Travel Picks

May is one of the warmest Spring months and there are lots of opportunities to get out and about and delight in the good weather. From local exhibitions to hot new restaurant openings, there are plenty of events in May to enjoy.

Events in May

May is a month of celebrations, with the Cinco de Mayo festivities in Mexico on 5 May, Mother’s Day in the USA on 13 May, Victory Day on 21 May in Canada and Memorial Day on 28 May in the USA. In the UK, RHS Chelsea Flower Show will take place from 22-26 May and if previous years are anything to go by then it will be another huge success.

Also in London, Tate Modern has a new exhibition until 14 October, Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art. It features over 350 works by more than 100 artists including Man Ray and Jackson Pollock.

Photo London takes place from 17-20 May and the Leica Collectors’ Lounge will be featuring an exclusive showcase of works by photographer Bruce Gilden, Farm Boys and Farm Girls USA.

Liberty London is one of our favourite fashion and design stores. They have some exclusive new designers in their Jewellery Hall for AW18, such as Daou, Stephanie Schneider and Margaret Solow. The craftsmanship is superb, with an interesting mix of materials including fabric as well as gemstones, gold and silver.

One of our favourite nightwear brands is Cyberjammies, who have a gorgeous new collection out. We’re particularly taken with their Grace flamingo print woven short sleeve pyjama set. Made from 52% cotton and 48% modal, it will keep you cool when the temperature rises. With a comfy elasticated waistband decorated with a pretty pink tie, it’s a lovely way to inject tropical style into your life.

If your skin could do with a Spring clean, then a Vaishaly Signature Facial is just the job. At the stylish Marylebone salon, iconic facialist, Vaishaly and her team of experienced therapists will leave you relaxed and looking your very best. We tried the Vaishaly Signature Facial which is tailor-made to each client. Vaishaly herself is so warm and friendly that you’ll instantly feel at ease. She analyzes your skin and then performs a deep cleanse with pain-free extraction followed by gentle micro-dermabrasion which removes dead skin cells. This is followed up with high frequency light that closes pores and kills bacteria on the skin. One of the highlights of Vaishaly’s treatment is her unique massage technique, which rebalances your mind and body. If we store up stress, it shows on our face and so she and her team aim to remove all tension from your mind as well as your face and neck. Her cranial massage is highly effective, and I instantly felt a release in my right shoulder which had been aching for days prior to the facial. As for the face itself, you’ll leave with skin glowing and super smooth, thanks to the final stage of the treatment, a bespoke mask for your skin type. My skin looks plumper and more youthful, with fine lines and rosacea both reduced and an improvement in tone. The Vaishaly Signature Facial is £120 with an aesthetician for 55 minutes or £200 with Vaishaly herself. While you’re at the salon, why not also try the eyebrow threading which Vaishaly pioneered in the UK.

Now is the perfect time to visit the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The weather is gorgeous but not too hot and the towns themselves are quieter than in the height of Summer. We can highly recommend a road trip from Sorrento to Amalfi, having recently taken one with Classic Collection Holidays. You’d be hard pressed to find a more scenic part of Italy and that’s saying something!

Estonia may be a small country, with 1.3 million residents, but it really packs a punch. Did you know that it is the most digitally advanced country in the world? Yet it’s also very picturesque, with unspoiled coastline and forest as well as Tallinn Old Town to admire. We’ll be sharing some of the highlights from our recent visit in the weeks to come.

Thailand is a wonderful destination at any time of year, with Bangkok and Chiang Mai being particularly popular with travellers. However there are also some fantastic hidden gems in Thailand, such as Koh Yao Noi, that shouldn’t be missed. We’ve put together a guide of the best off the beaten path Thailand treasures on the Andaman Coast, to inspire your wanderlust.

Another place that deserves to be better known is Sarasota County in Florida. Blessed with year round sunshine, some of the best beaches in the United States and fabulous restaurants, its a great alternative or add-on to the theme parks. There are also some incredible museums in Sarasota such as The Ringling, and child-friendly days out at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium among many more.

Wining and Dining

A stalwart of the Chelsea dining scene, Bluebird Cafe has a brand new White City outpost. Located in the former Televison Centre which is open to the public for the first time, this all day eatery has a lovely outdoor terrace. It’s a great place in which to enjoy their bottomless brunch on a sunny weekend. Diners choose from a variety of tasty starters, mains and desserts including fish and chips, Irish Angus flat iron steak and Caesar salad.

We particularly liked the stonebass ceviche starter with avocado, coriander and ginger, which was delicate yet packed with flavour. A main course of Calabrian crusted yellowfin tuna with green sauce and grilled onion was another healthy choice though very filling. It was cooked for just the right amount of time and

My decadent triple chocolate dessert combined ice cream, caramelized popcorn, chocolate crumble and brownie to great effect. You could also opt for a light dessert such as caramelized pineapple.

What do you have planned in May? Wishing you a wonderful month ahead
