New designers at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House are often given small or awkward spaces. It feels like a test. Will they complain or knock it out of the park so they can graduate to a bigger space down the road? Sasha Bickoff was given a plain white staircase that she turned into a riot of color and pattern that has become the talk of the townhouse. The small landings couldn’t accommodate much furniture which is why Sasha decided to focus on shape and scale inspired by Memphis Design Group movement founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass in 1982. She worked with George Venson of Voutsa on the patterned wallpapers, The Rug Company on the colorful carpets, and pulled it all together with paint from Farrow & Ball. It’s probably not something you’d do on the main staircase of your own home but it looks like great inspiration for stairs to a play or game room or decor for a fun teenager. It also looks like Sasha Bikoff definitely passed the test.
