Faringdon House in Oxfordshire, England was the house on which Nancy Mitford based the fictional house Merlinford in her book The Pursuit of Love. In reality, it was the home of composer, painter, and novelist Lord Berners, who inherited the house in 1918 and lived in it from 1931 until his death in 1950. Faringdon played host to creative greats of the time such as Salvador Dali, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cecil Beaton, and Gertrude Stein, among others.
His partner, Robert “Mad Boy” Heber-Percy inherited the house and left it to his granddaughter Sofka Zinovieff who recently sold it. The gorgeous furnishings, objects, and art from the estate are now up for auction at Christie’s on April 12, 2018 in London.
Highlights of the sale include a George III giltwood mirror, a cream painted and glass four poster bed, and a George II-style giltwood and ebonised eagle console table. You can see all the lots for sale at Christie’s here. The Interiors sale also includes property from a David Hicks interior. Good luck!
