I love the John Derian stores on East 2nd Street but they are a destination and not a place I walk by regularly. That’s why I am so excited about his new store that just opened at 18 Christopher Street in the West Village which is one of my regular haunts. The front of the store was designed to evoke the feeling of the Astier de Villatte store in Paris with the blessing of founders Benoît Astier de Villatte and Ivan Pericoli. Everything in the space was aged to look as if it had been there since the building was built in the 19th-century instead of freshly installed. John had actually fell in love with this building almost 20 years ago but the owner never replied to his message so it was fate that he would finally make it his all these years later. I can’t wait to see the store when the wisteria vine, that I almost hit my head on today, is in bloom. Then it will really feel like John Derian has been there forever.
