Most private clubs have a strict “no photos” policy. I was so afraid of getting my hosts kicked out of 5 Hertford in London that I didn’t dare pull out my camera, not even in the loo. Now, the pink ladies lounge of Annabel’s club is the most posted room on Instagram and the entire club is featured on the cover of the new June 2018 issue of World of Interiors.
While this incarnation of Annabel’s designed by Martin Brudnizki at 46 Berkeley Square is new, the legendary club has been around since 1963. Mark Birley opened the club at 44 Berkeley Square in the basement of his friend John Aspinall’s casino, the Clermont Club, and named it after his then wife, Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart. The private after hours nightclub designed by Nina Campbell was popular with celebrities and royals and is said to be the only nightclub the Queen has ever visited.
Annabel’s was sold to British entrepreneur Richard Caring in 2007 who moved it to a Georgian townhouse a few doors down. It still has a basement nightclub but it now includes three other floors of rooms and a roof. The over the the top decor begins by greeting you with a Picasso in the lobby and a hanging Pegasus in the stairwell. Martin Brudnizki said that owner Richard Caring told him to “go crazy, don’t hold back.” The pattern on pattern rooms are a little crazy but are also very elegant and inviting, especially that ladies loo with pink onyx sinks and gold swan taps and silk peony filled ceiling.
I really hope I can find someone to host me at Annabel’s on my next trip to London just so I can post it on Instagram too.
