Beachfront Dining in Barcelona

For Mr S’s Barcelona birthday trip, the beach front location of Hotel Arts was perfect. Away from the city we really did feel like we were on holiday as we strolled along the soft sands of Barceloneta Beach, one of the oldest and most loved in the city.  
With the looming structure of the Hotel Arts and the Frank Gehry fish on one side…
And the iconic wave of the W on the other side.

It’s a relaxed half an hour walk between the two hotels with plenty of chilled out bars and restaurants to stop for a paella and lots of interesting art work to admire. 
Mr S just loves the sea and a perfect birthday for him is sitting on the beach with the Mediterranean sea in the background enjoying some fantastic Spanish food. I did my research (as usual) to find some of the best beach side locations for lunch and I thought I’d share them with you.

Agua

Owned by the Tragaluz Group, a luxury lifestyle brand with restaurants across the city, Agua is a gorgeous restaurant set back just a little from the beach. A natural rustic design is perfect for the relaxed atmosphere of this seafood restaurant.

We tucked into calamari of fantastic quality – crisp and not all greasy…

A steaming bowl of mussels and a juicy tuna tartar. I had actually ordered a main course which I cancelled, finding the tapas to be plenty!

Platja Ca la Nuri

A little further down the beach and right next to Agua is Platja Ce la Nuri, a historical restaurant in the city. Owner Nuri has spent her life in the kitchen, setting up her first restaurant back in 1962 with her husband Jordi. Nowadays they have two restaurants in the city run by their sons and this one on the beach is known for it’s paella. 
The design of Ce la Nuri is a little less fancy than Agua but you can sit closer to the sand almost with your feet right in the grains. 
Addictive tomato bread is the perfect way to start a meal.  
And Mr S’s seafood paella was simply heaven served straight in a pan and with those perfect toasted edges.
My grilled sea bream was just how I like it – crisp skin and delicate flesh. Ce la Nuri is seriously a winner.

The W Barcelona

I was a little worried that I may have made a mistake by not staying at the iconic W Barcelona but after visiting I knew I’d made the right choice for us. Hotel Arts is the more laid back and luxurious choice whereas the W is fun and lively. There are a few lovely looking restaurants at the hotel including Bravo24 for high quality Catalan cuisine and Salt Restaurant and Beach Club for burgers and cocktails on the beach. We didn’t have a chance to eat there but we soaked in the atmosphere with champagne sangria by the pool and returned in the evening to check out rooftop night club, Eclipse.

Carpe Diem Lounge Club

I also wanted to give you a heads up that this may be one to avoid. Mr S and I were looking for a light meal before heading back to the airport for a 10pm flight and so we thought we’d grab some sushi at Carpe Diem Lounge Club (CDLC) which was located right outside our hotel. I liked the chilled out atmosphere and Buddha style lounge and I can imagine in the evening it would be a great nightclub especially given the beach front location.
The sangria was terrible and the sushi was very average and the bill was much larger than at Agua though the food was inferior. Personally I wouldn’t go back in for the food but it’s a lovely spot so I’d pop back for a glass of wine.
